Volunteerism…A Healthy Approach to a Life Made Meaningful

Staff Updates

David Renninger knows the power of community collaboration. A founding member of the Stow Rotary Club, David has always been involved in service projects, both with the Rotary and through his job as an insurance agent. After retiring in 2005, David has made volunteerism a major focus of his retirement.

Today, David remains active in Rotary. He also serves as president of the Stow-Munroe Falls Library Board. He delivers food through the Mobile Meals program and volunteers at the Stow Municipal Court, assisting judges and bailiffs.

“I saw an ad in the Stow Sentry that Mobile Meals needed drivers. I had the

time and offered to help,” he says. “Once a week, I deliver meals to people in our area. Sometimes, I’m the only person they see that day or week – making this ‘job’ very important.”

He enjoys the variety of the experiences gained at the courthouse – from processing paperwork to escorting court members to their locations.

“I’ve always been fascinated with the judicial process,” he says. “This position gives me an up-close view and helps the City of Stow in the process.”

Staying sharpHe regularly visits the fitness center and completes crossword puzzles daily.

Chris Jordan, Millennial Group’s business manager, is adept at managing details. She balances the stress of keeping people and processes organized with photography, a creative hobby and side business she’s pursued since 2003. With her camera in hand, she leaves the orderly world of financial management behind and steps into a realm with few boundaries.

In her home studio, she captures people and things in varying lights and poses. Out of the studio, she enjoys shooting events and nature.

“Perfect Lick”

“I know that staying active and keeping my mind strong is critical to staying healthy as I age,” says David.

A Millennial Group client for approximately 10 years, David has three grown children - Kristine, who lives in Dallas; Jennifer who lives in Portland; and Scott, who lives in Raleigh. He visits them regularly and stays in touch over the phone and online.

“I encourage people to give of their time when they retire,” he says. “Many of us have been very blessed in our careers, and it is a privilege to be able to help others when our full-time work ends.”

Business Manager by Day Becomes Creative Photog After Hours

In April, nearly 100 Millennial Group clients gathered at the company’s headquarters to gain insights into how this year’s election may affect the financial climate in this country and around the world.

Guest speakers Dr. Jay Case, a history professor at Malone University, and Andrew Vermilye, vice president of government relations for Fidelity Investments, shared historical and statistical perspectives on the subject.

“When it comes to the economy, the president gets more blame and more credit than he deserves,” said Dr. Case. “We think presidents can ‘fix’ the economy when it’s broken, but it’s much more complex than that.”

Increased globalization is a concern today, he said. Elections in other countries affect the U.S. much more than they used to. Americans are pragmatists – we want quick action taken, and we (collectively) are much less big-picture thinkers than other western civilizations.

Building on Dr. Case’s historical foundation, Vermilye discussed the challenges of this year’s election.

“Strong partisanship keeps Congress from making any progress before the election,” he said. “Essentially, we’re in a stalemate. And we may be facing government shut-downs due to lack of funding of the federal government.”

Payroll tax cuts, the end of the Bush-era tax cuts and hitting a new national debt ceiling could create a 3+ percent drop in gross domestic product, which can affect consumer confidence and voting results.

Based on current polling, Vermilye says that the vast majority of voters have selected their candidate. The Republicans and Democrats will spend $2 billion to reach the 5 percent of voters who are undecided.

He believes the most significant election topic this year is the economy. “It’s my hope that Congress will be more pragmatic and work together to face our country’s challenges,” he said.

“Photography is relaxing,” she says. “It gives me the opportunity to see things from new perspectives and allows me to be creative, which brings me joy.” The photos on this page are examples of Chris’ talent.

In the near future, her work will grace the walls of the Millennial Group’s Akron office. Stop by and take a peek.

“Flying with Friends”
