Mr. Vickers’ Views:I am wri(ng this month’s newsle2er ar(cle fresh off one of my favorite annual community events, “Tales by Twlight” which was held last night. I just love reading aloud to children, as I am sure most of you do, as well. Along with the sound of children’s laughter on a playground and listening to their voices raised in song, one of my favorite things is seeing the look in their eyes as they listen to a book that they are obviously enjoying. As adults, we just need to really cherish these moments since they don’t last forever. I’m taking par(cular stock in such things at this (me in my life.
Just yesterday, I met with a prospec(ve Mill Run family and gave them a tour of our beau(ful building. The father asked me a ques(on that I have heard many (mes over the years. He said, “What makes this school so special? I read the very high ra(ngs that it receives, and they seem to be unparalleled.” I thought for a moment, and then I responded that most of the online ranking systems are based upon parental input, which can be either highly favorable or somewhat less effusive. I consider such systems to be quite subjec(ve, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Mill Run certainly has the objec(ve data to back-‐up our excellence; however, we oNen get the best “sense” of a school by visi(ng it and by talking with the key stakeholders. In our case, that would be our students, their parents, and our top-‐flight staff. My ul(mate response to this father was that we see ourselves as a vessel that brings our community together. I’m not sure that this is necessarily unique, but it is important, and it is a characteris(c that makes this school special.
Next week, we will begin our second session of our aNer-‐school ac(vi(es, and then March will be here. Though it certainly doesn’t feel anything like spring today (our high temperature will be about 10 degrees), before we know it, the crocuses will be popping their heads above the ground and robins will be bopping around looking for worms aNer spring rains. It will be a (me of rebirth, the smell of neighborhood barbecues will waN up in the air, and we’ll hear baseball umpires shout, “Play ball!” What could be more glorious!?!
I just thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share in your families’ lives. Your children bring many smiles to my face each and every day.
Have a blessed March!
Most fondly,
Paul L. VickersPrincipal

PTO Meetings for the School Year
March 10th (evening!!) April 14th May 12th
Meetings are held on Tuesdays at 2:50 p.m. in the library at Mill Run.
All are welcome, including children! We encourage your participation and feedback.
Cornely’s Conversation
The month of March is a special month during our school year because we celebrate Read Across America, which also coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. Dr. Seuss’ full name was Theodor Seuss Geisel and he was born in SpringAield, Massachusetts. He is most notably known for the 46 children’s books that he wrote,
but did you know that he was also a cartoonist? Growing up, I loved Dr. Seuss books, and have vivid memories of my parents reading these stories to me. I particularly enjoyed the colorful illustrations and the word choices he used to tell his stories. His style made them that much more exciting to read! My favorite book that he wrote is, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” I actually fell in love with this book when I graduated from college, a gift that was given to me as I prepared for the “real world.” This story reminds us that we can do whatever it is that we want to do, as long as we give it our best effort and put our minds to it. Though I received this story as a college graduation gift, it is one that can be shared with a kindergartener, Aifth grader, or senior, and it will leave a lasting impression that all can relate to. During this month, please explore a few of the many Dr. Seuss stories available. I am conAident that your children will continue to grow and love this special person and author. To learn more about Dr. Seuss, his books, characters, and activities you may consider doing with your children, please visit Seussville.
When Loudoun County experiences inclement weather conditions the safety of our students and staff is the most important consideration. In the event that weather or other reasons require either closing or delaying the opening of school, plan to receive up to the minute notiAication via e-‐mail, a cell phone call,
or text message by registering with Loudoun Alert. You may register for this free service by accessing the LCPS Closings and Delays page via the “site shortcuts” pull down menu on the Mill Run home page. Parents have shared that often Loudoun Alert reported school closings before TV and radio stations began broadcasting the information. Please plan to use this valuable resource.
Don’t feel like cooking? You don’t have to!
Take a night off and join your Mill Run friends

Veltri’s VisionBy: Marisa Veltri, Administrative Intern
As I sit here in my office writing this message, I had to stop for a moment and take a deep breathe, and
realize that the month of March is here! This school year is definitely flying by! Before you know it, we are
going to be welcoming spring (I know I definitely will!!!), and then moving right in to summer!
It has been a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to get in to our classrooms and visit with our
teachers and students! The lessons that I have been a part of have been filled with all sorts of activities
ranging from hands-on experiments, to activities that include the use of the Promethean boards, ActiVotes and
ActiViews. I must say that our students are “experts” when it comes to using the Promethean board and all
of the other forms of technology! Our teachers and students are so fortunate to have this level of technology
right at their fingertips!
Please remember to continue looking inside of your child(s) yellow Thursday folder, as well as
checking the Calendar of Events on Mill Run’s webpage for more information. Staying connected is a very
important part of your child(s) education! Thank you for being a part of that!
Sincerely,Ma!sa

The “Character Word” for the month of March is Trustworthiness . Guidance lessons in the classroom will focus on trustworthiness in the three major developmental skill areas: academic, social and career. We want to encourage group and individual responsibility for trustworthiness. This character trait is demonstrated by telling the truth, doing your own work, and being reliable. Expressions that demonstrate this concept include “Caring about what you say and do so others will trust you”. Please ask your children to tell you about what they learned in their guidance lesson.
Parent Workshop: “Childhood Anxieties” presented by Bob Axelrod of In-StepWhere: Hillside Elementary (Library)When: Wednesday, March 11th at 6:30
Middle School Alert: Eagle Ridge has scheduled another Band Information Night for Tuesday, March 24th at 6:00 at Eagle Ridge. If you and your child have not yet attended one please attend this one. All course selection sheets have been turned in to the middle schools to begin the process of preparing a schedule for your child for the 2015-16 school year.
The next Mountain Lion’s Pride Citizenship Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, March 4th. A gentle reminder to parents, if you are unable to attend the Mountain Lion’s Pride breakfast when your child is receiving the award, please let the school counselors and/or the classroom teacher know. Students feel so sad and many tears are shed when there is no one there to see them receive their award.

PTO NEWS
Be the change you want to see in the world. -Gandhi
We are looking forward to March and hopefully some warmer temperatures. And what
better way to start off than our 5th Annual Mill Run Carnival on Friday, March 13th! This event
always proves to be a fantastic evening for the entire family and I’m confident this year will
be no different. The list of silent auction items is tremendous and our room moms are busily
preparing the raffle baskets. Thank you to all who have already contributed to this amazing
night. If you would like to get involved, please email myself or Erin Stevens at
[email protected]. A sign-up genius will be coming out soon from Christine Andretta with
volunteer opportunities for the evening. If you want to be included on that email and didn’t
check the box on the volunteer interest form at the beginning of the year, please email
Christine at [email protected].
We are excited to highlight a few of the silent auction items you can look forward to at
carnival. This year we have camp sessions from Camp Twin Creeks and Camp Cody included
in the silent auction. They are both 2 week sessions during the summer. You can check out
their websites at www.camptwincreeks.com and www.Campcody.com. If you, or any business
you know, would like to donate to our silent auction, please contact Belinda Ramberg at
Also coming up in March is our Fuddruckers restaurant night on March 24th. We hope
everyone can come out and enjoy dinner at Fuddruckers while also supporting our school. Be
on the lookout for gift card order forms coming home in Thursday folders on March 19th.
We’ll be showing our appreciation to our Custodial Staff during the week of March 2nd. The
PTO meeting for March will be held on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:30pm in the school library.
We hope you can join us. We are always looking for ways to make our organization stronger
for the benefit of our students.
Thank you for your continued support!

PTO President
Please Label Jackets
Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, please make sure to write your children’s names inside their jackets. You would be surprised how
many jackets are left at school each year and never reclaimed. At the end of each year, we wash our lost and found items and give them to charity.
We always check for identification labels and return them to the appropriate children first.
Please remember that you can find our Lost and Found in the two wardrobe cabinets outside of the gym.
THe 5th ANNUAL PTO CARNIVAL
Friday March 13th from 5-8pm!
Games, Food, Raffles and Prizes!!
Want to get involved? The PTO could use your help with Mill Run’s biggest fundraiser!
