From the Pastor’s Heart The mass shooting in Las Vegas felt personal to me. As many of you know, I had been in Las Vegas to attend my nephew’s wedding just a week before it happened. As soon as I could after I heard about the shooting, I texted my sister, “Please verify that you are all ok.” My family was okay; other people’s families were not. My nephew Alex (the best man, brother of the groom) works as an EMT at a casino, and he was one of the first on the scene. I am proud of his service. Many other families are equally proud of their loved ones who responded in a variety of ways to this horror. Alex and his girlfriend attended a music festival the week of his brother’s wedding; a festival the shooter had checked out. It doesn’t take too much imagination to picture Alex as a victim instead of a first responder.

As of this writing, many questions remain unanswered, most especially “why?” This shooter does not match the profile that describes shooters in so many other tragedies. We will surely learn more in the coming days, but we will most likely remain confused about the motive for this crime.

This was the largest mass shooting in recent history. The sad truth is that shootings of multiple people happen around the U.S. every day. Twice in my years in Moscow, the community experienced shootings that took the lives of several people. Ten years ago, on a Saturday night about two blocks from the church I served, a man opened fire at the sheriff’s office and then at the Presbyterian Church, with whom we worked closely. On Sunday morning I could not get to the church because the police had blocked access to the area. We managed to have worship that day but had to cancel Sunday School. Our friends at the Presbyterian Church lost their custodian in that shooting, and the shooter killed himself in their sanctuary. It did not take too much imagination to picture this nightmare taking place in our church. We hosted four nights of prayer vigils for the community at the Presbyterians’ request.

Several years ago, a man opened fire at the apartment building across the street from my office, although I was not there at the time. In the end, that man killed three people before fleeing town at a hundred miles an hour. It does not take too much imagination to picture my being in the office and that shooter crossing the street. Again, we hosted a community prayer vigil.

The truth of the matter is that mass shootings are always personal to a lot of people. They have become so common on our news that it is tempting to become hardened to them, to forget their horror and move on to other parts of life. I do that myself. Until now, I have struggled to come up with words to address their horror. Because the topic of gun control is so controversial, I find myself a bit gun-shy (pun intended) about addressing that as one facet of this issue. Access to mental health care and acceptance of violence in the media and through video games is equally difficult to address. I’m no expert in any of this, and I think all of these issues, and more, are relevant to the problem. I don’t know the full answer. I do know that every time there is any type of mass shooting, it is personal to someone, to many people. Prayer is an appropriate response. And it is not enough. I don’t know what the solution is. Probably we need a variety of solutions. Let us all work together to find them.

Pastor Sue

Mental Health and the Church Mental illness is common. As a society we struggle to address it and often associate a stigma with those who have mental illness. Yet mental illness is really no different than most physical illnesses: we don’t set out to be depressed any more than we set out to get cancer.

Throughout the month of November, during her sermons, Pastor Sue will explore mental health. Each Sunday she will address a specific type of mental illness and how we as a church can respond. Professional mental health agencies will also be present to help us learn about the resources available in our community. Plans are still unfolding, so watch Notes and News as it comes to your inbox. At this point, the schedule includes:

November 5: Anxiety and Panic Disorders

November 12: Depression and Suicide

November 19: Substance Abuse

November 26: Schizophrenia

Lay Leader Greetings What is the earliest thing you remember? My first memory is flying to the Philippines with my mother. My mother was from Iloilo in the Philippines, and when I was about 4 years old my mother, brother and I went there and stayed for nearly a year as my grandfather was very ill. I remember sitting with him and going to the beach with my cousins. I even remember some of the other places that we went. When I returned later in life I recognized those places and was reacquainted with long lost relatives.

In high school I invited a person I knew to come with me to a Bible study. He later became a Christian. I found out years later that he became a missionary and lives in one of the places where my mother grew up. How could I have ever guessed this would happen! How could my mother ever have guessed this could happen!

Thanksgiving is a time for remembering. Let us remember all that God has done for us. Know that he knows us better than we know ourselves, as revealed in the following verse: Psalms 139 1-4

O Lord, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue,

But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

Let’s Support Hearthwood How can we support Hearthwood Elementary (Mill Plain UMC’s partner school)? By volunteering to be:

A lunch buddy - Spend about an hour a week having lunch, visiting, playing a game and/or reading a book with a child.

A tutor - work with an individual or small groups of children on an activity provided by the teacher - one hour/week, or more if you wish.

The first step to becoming a lunch buddy or tutor is to pick up a background check form from Hearthwood or the church office, and then return the completed form to the school. Not only are the Hearthwood staff members very welcoming and appreciative of any help we can give, they are also willing to work around our individual schedules. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Sherry Sotka, Sue Blakey or call the church office.

Advent Class Advent is a time of preparation and waiting leading up to Christmas. There will be two opportunities to attend a four-week Advent class, Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam, by James W. Moore. Melody Mello will facilitate one class beginning Sunday, November 26. Come and join in the fellowship of a soup dinner at

5:45 p.m. at Melody’s home near S.E. 192 Avenue. Class will start at 6:30 p.m. Pastor Sue will lead the class beginning Monday, November 27, 10 a.m..

Christmas and confusion have been intimately related since the night of Christ’s birth. Bethlehem was not a quiet, sleepy little town!

Please contact [email protected] or call the church office for more information.

The books will be available in mid-November for a suggested donation of $10. Please read Chapter 1 prior to the first class.

Remember to set your

United Methodist Student Day United Methodist Student Day is Sunday, November 26. On this United Methodist Special Giving Sunday, you will have the opportunity to support young people of the United Methodist Church (UMC). Your gift will help to support the United Methodist Scholarship and United Methodist Student Loan Fund. Annual conferences participating in the Rebate Program may award one or more merit scholarships to United Methodist students who reside in the conference and attend a United Methodist related college or university. Through scholarships, we develop leaders. Together, our gifts can make a difference for a UMC young person who might not have the resources to attend a school of their choice.

Your check can be made out to Mill Plain United Methodist Church and please list UMC Student Day in the memo line. For more information go to www.umcgiving.org/umsd.

We are reminded in Proverbs 9:9: Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Thanksgiving Baskets Fall is in the air, and it is time to start thinking about Thanksgiving Baskets for Hearthwood Elementary School families. The economy in our community indicates many people are in need of food and

staples, especially during the holidays. Our food baskets will include a choice of a turkey or pre-cooked ham, canned and boxed foods, fresh produce, eggs, butter and milk, along with other needed staples. Please stop by our display board in the lobby to choose a food or staples tag to provide for the baskets. Many of the families who have received our boxes in the past have said

they are especially appreciative of the variety of foods they received.

Donated foods may be brought to the church and placed on or under the table by our display board by Sunday, November 19. We will be assembling the boxes that day following the 11 a.m. service, and will deliver the boxes Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21. If you would like to help deliver boxes, the sign-up sheets are next to our display board. We call each family to set up a delivery time, and you will be provided a map with directions to their homes.

If you would prefer to make a cash or check donation, please write the check to Mill Plain United Methodist Church (MPUMC) and write Thanksgiving Baskets on the memo line. All donations will be used to purchase the turkeys, hams and fresh food items. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sunday School Study Topics The November focus for our kindergarten and elementary Sunday School students will be The Wise King. Lessons include:

Solomon Becomes King: This lesson explains how King David, who is now old, chooses

Solomon, his son, to be the next king of Israel. Solomon asked God for wisdom and understanding so that he could govern God’s people well. God gave him wisdom, a long life and great wealth.

Solomon’s Wisdom Proverbs: This lesson teaches about the wise words of Solomon in poems and sayings. These sayings were written by many people over a long period of time and encourage faith and obedience to God.

Solomon Builds the Temple: This is the story about how, now that the people of Israel finally settled down and lived peaceably, Solomon, with his great wealth, was able to create a special, permanent, holy place for God.

Solomon Dedicates the Temple: This story explains the Israelite community’s gathering to bring the sacred vessels for worship into the temple Solomon had built. Solomon addressed the people and praised God’s infinite greatness, power and faithfulness. Solomon asked the people to be faithful and obedient to God.

Third Grade Bible Presentation

If you have a child who is currently in third grade, please let the office know and plan on attending the 9:30 a.m. service, November 19. We will present children’s Bibles to our third grade students. This is an important moment in the Christian education of children as they move from being told stories from the Bible, to reading and discovering these stories for themselves.

CHURCH OFFICE / 360-892-2421 CIRCUIT RIDER / NOVEMBER 2017

Angel Tree On November 26 our angels return to the lobby! (These are in addition to the angels we see every Sunday in our lobby!) It’s time for the Angel Tree, so get ready to remember why you love the Christmas season! There is nothing like our annual Angel Tree Mission, which provides clothing and a toy or game for children and their siblings at Hearthwood Elementary School at Christmas.

Starting on November 26, look for a small tabletop tree decorated with angels and gift tags. The tags indicate whether the gift is for a boy or girl, along with their age and grade. Each child will have two tag sets, and each set will have one white tag and one colored tag. One is for a gift of clothing and one is for a toy or a game.

Check the tags out, select one or more, put your name and phone number on the white tag and place it in the basket on the table so we can trace the gifts. Take the colored tag home.

On Sunday, December 10, bring the wrapped gift back to church with the original colored gift tag gently attached to the package. This is our way of matching the gift to the right child. If possible, attach the clothing gift receipt (for size exchanges) and place the gift by the tree or under the table. All the recipients will be Hearthwood students and their siblings selected by the school counselor as needing assistance with the holidays.

If you would like to make a monetary donation, please make it to Mill Plain UMC and indicate Angel Tree on the memo section. Put checks and cash donations in the tag basket by the tree. Donations will be used to purchase gifts for tags that do not get chosen.

On Tuesday, December 12, and Wednesday, December 13, we will deliver the gifts to the families. There will be a sign-up sheet by the tree for volunteers to help deliver gifts. Volunteers who have signed up will be called to confirm their delivery times. Contact the church office if you have questions or need suggestions.

Your support is truly appreciated. Many thanks!

Hearthwood Elementary and Missions Team

Nourishing Your Soul All are welcome to join us at our monthly Christian book study. This month we are reading Who Does He Say You Are? by Colleen Mitchell. Mitchell weaves together moving anecdotes of her own search for her spiritual identity along with thirteen accounts of women in scripture. She inspires the reader to discover the

answer to this all-important question for themselves – who does He say you are? Please purchase the book from the vendor of your choice, and read it prior to our gathering Tuesday, November 28, 2:30 p.m., at the church. Contact Melody Mello with any questions.

Good Timers (50+)

Good Timers will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m., November 8, at Eastland Sushi. Our guest speaker is Pat Jollota, whose program will focus on the naming of local parks. Pat Jollota, who loves history and wants everyone else to share it, is a published historian of Clark County, who was also Clark County’s First Citizen in 2012; served for 20 years on the Vancouver City Council; was the curator for 22 years of the Clark County Historical Museum; and was a founding member of the Arthur D. Curtis Children’s Justice Center. Prior to her arrival in Vancouver with her husband in 1982, they had four sons and had both served with the Los Angeles Police Department, she as a civilian and he as a detective. They then moved to England after retirement to manage a guesthouse. Please join us to meet Pat Jollota and hear her interesting presentation!

Preschool News

Our preschool children continue to learn their letters and numbers. It’s exciting to listen as the children repeat the sounds each letter makes, and they are just as excited when they learn the correct pronunciations. By the end of this school year, the pre-K boys and girls will be able to easily count to 100!

November is the month to realize just how many blessings our God has given each of us. As one of their art projects, each classroom will create an extra large Thank You card to be displayed on Sunday, November 12. The card will thank all the veterans in our congregation for their dedicated service and sacrifice to this country, so that all of us, regardless of all else, can be free to pursue our peaceful dreams and personal honorable goals.

Our children are engaged in creating thankful crafts to take home to their families. One in particular is a thankful tree with leaves where the children are writing things for which they are thankful. Each child is creating his or her own tree and individual colorful leaves.

Our staff will be sharing stories of the first settlers and how, with God’s blessings, they made a successful crossing to this wonderful country. The children will learn how the Pilgrims were welcomed by the Indians. The staff will focus on the loving, generous behavior of these

vastly divergent peoples and how they worked together to survive very harsh conditions. When the fruits of their labors were harvested, each one knelt side by side to thank and praise God in their own fashion, and they feasted together in goodwill and brotherly love. God loves all his children: dark skins or light skins are the same in God’s eyes.

Please come visit our classrooms. Give Mrs. D. a call at 360-896-2696. The children would love to see you. The preschool board and staff wish you a blessed and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Reverend Paul Jeffrey - Covenant Relationship Missionary: $770

Share House Food: $800

Hearthwood Elementary Fund: $500

Winter Hospitality Overflow Shelter: $500

Pastor's Discretionary Fund: $500

The balance of the funds is being held in reserve as a buffer for other mission opportunities that might arise. A huge Thank You! to everyone who helped make the rummage sale a success. Their efforts allow our church to reach out and touch the lives of people in our community and around the world.

Finance Committee News This is a reminder to turn in your Estimate of Giving card for 2018, if you have not already done so. It can be dropped off or mailed to Mill Plain UMC, or put in the offering plate on Sunday.

No card? They are available at the church or you can jot down your name and offering plan for 2018 on a note card or piece of paper. This information is vital to our preparation of the 2018 Ministry Action Plan (budget). Thank you for your help!

Books, Faith and Fellowship The Book Club selection for the month of November is State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. We will meet at the church Thursday, November 16, 9:30 a.m.

This is a Book Club Discussion Kit. Copies of the

book are available in the church office. Please remember to sign your name and book number (located on the spine) on the sheet located in the blue box so we can keep track. Here is some information about the book:

Marina Singh gave up a career as a doctor, opting instead for the more orderly world of research for a pharmaceutical company. When office colleague Anders Eckman, sent to the Amazon to check on the work of a field team, is reported dead, Marina is asked by her company's CEO to complete Anders' task. Marina's jungle odyssey includes exotic encounters with cannibals and snakes, a knotty ethical dilemma about the basic tenets of scientific research and joyous interactions with the exuberant people of the Lakashi tribe.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The Jewish people say that the Talis (Prayer Shawl) is a religious symbol, a garment, shroud, canopy or cloak which envelops the wearer both physically and spiritually, in prayer and celebration, in joy and sorrow.

We have some easy projects, and the result is a blessing to you as much as the recipient. Babies in Need needs newborn baby caps and blankets. This month our focus will also be on caps and scarves for all ages to be given to the Winter Hospitality Overflow homeless shelters this winter. The work of YOUR Hands will make a difference.

Already many shawls have comforted loved ones of our church family and friends. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time, please pick up a shawl or lap robe from the church office; or a newborn hat for a special baby. We will meet Thursday, November 9, 10 a.m. in G/H.
