Plants in the milkweed family contain toxins which most insects find inedible- but not Monarchs! The caterpillars store these compounds in their bodies, making them distasteful to predators. There are many other insects that also rely on Milkweed, including Large Milkweed bugs, Milkweed leaf beetles and Milkweed tussock moths. There are 17 Milkweed species which are native to Ohio.
