ContrapuntalOf, relating to, or incorporating counterpoint.Warp & Weft1. The warp is the set of lengthwise yarns through which the weft is woven.2. The weft is yarn which is drawn through the warp yarns to create cloth.

ConceptLike weaving, traditional paper-making uses the same principles of the warp and weft to create patterns of different strengths. Understanding this language of interconnection allows the building to use a common language that produces multiple outcomes or different forms.

Design ProcessDesigned in a series of steps, the paper making studio evolves from a conceptual idea of weaving traditional paper making fibers such as hemp, linen, mohair, and cotton into a language for spatial development. Like the fundamentals of warp & weft used in weaving, the building uses contrapuntal systems to create drama through opposing conditions. Light and dark, soft and strong, reflection and directness, stereometric and tectonic.

Page 5: Miljo_Cory Nestor

Papermill - 5

DramaTransparency and light penetration both help to dry paper and create interest.

ContrapuntalLight and dark, stereometric and tectonic, soft and rough, crisp edges and delicate curves, and contrapuntal rhythms within the building delineate space.

Spatial DevelopmentA 1/8 scale model explores this language further, setting up a contrapuntal relationship between built space and conceptual idea.

Even LightingDefused overhead lighting is conducive to highly reflective work surfaces used to make paper.

Page 6: Miljo_Cory Nestor

Light-Collecting SkinMultiple skins on the building collect and distribute light into the workshops below.

Suspended FloorThe first and second floor spaces are anchored into the building by the back and forth movement of the workers.

Soft FloorThe light wood decking on the ground floor is set at its maximum span, allowing the wood to flex and move.

Page 7: Miljo_Cory Nestor

Papermill - 7

DetailFour layers work together to create the second-floor ceiling. Louvers, space frame, glass roof, and paired I-columns work to distibute the weight while adding to the lightness of the structure.

1/2 Scale ModelThe atrium space was modeled to see the structural capacity of the paired I-columns.

Paper-making is both a subtractive and additive process simultaneously using a complex system of steps to create what is otherwise a simple piece of paper.

The warehouse is activated by light. The roof and ceiling structure collect and reflect light down into the spaces of the building.

A space frame and corrugated glass roof ensure optimal transparency.

Interior panels create structure and volume, while joining the two floors.

Page 13: Miljo_Cory Nestor

The exterior volume of the building has visual complexity and multiple textures, connecting the building with the vernacular nature of the site.

Zones within the building separate wet and dry workspaces, while concrete wall panels enclose loud mechanical equipment.

Microforest start small, building off of existing trees around main street, in planter beds, replacing parking spaces. Incorporated with a

pedestrian network, the forest grows as the pedestrian network grows. opportunities throughout downtown to expand the network included

unused parking lot leftovers, existing street planters, pedestrian bulb outs, 30-foot set backs from intersections, no-drive zones, and

selectively individual parking spots. As the microforest grows, rooftops and balcony can be used to fill in and create multiple

layers of ecosystems and pedestrian space.

Microforest - 19

Store Type ALarge single business buildings are common on main street, but are often separated from one another by building Type B.

Store Type BLarge and small Type B buildings attract pedestrian traffic and encourage visual complexity and interest.

Main IntersectionThe main intersection seen here is dominated by the automobile and lacks adequate pedestrian and ecosystem infrastructure and zones areas.

1. Town Village - The town-village spans Vashon highway, connecting a new agricultural center with a pedestrian oriented plaza, where current storefronts can work together to make a lively shopping and leisure space sheltered by the surrounding buildings and later, a large tree canopy. Directly contrasting the softscape, sun-oriented farmer’s market across the street.2. Bridge - Giving a designated space for pedestrians to cross the highway is necessary for making an

accessible public main street.3. Island - The island provides an archetype for current uninhabitable small parking lots, and acts as land acclamation for microforest through the downtown.4. Shore - Pedestrian bulb-outs allow pedestrians to occupy space by the road while still feeling safe. This space also provides for ground floor habitat for animals.5. Sea - The sea manages the sometimes unmanageable inhuman scale of the large commercial

parking lot, integrating pavers with the asphalt parking lot allow storm water management and gives the pedestrian a human scale ground cover, both scaling the space down, and giving the car reason to slow down.6. Dock - Cars and buses need a space to connect to the pedestrian walkways, the one highlighted in yellow allows King Country Transit buses 117 & 118 to move out of the way of traffic.

“The town can act as a shelter for species instead of a destroyer of them.”

Vehicles Interrupt Public Good

Rethinking main-street around the pedestrian, there are opportunities to rehabilitate the car oriented benign landscape, cater to the pedestrians and the local ecosystems helping to activate Vashon’s main-street.

Page 23: Miljo_Cory Nestor

Microforest - 23

7. Craft - Vashon has a vibrant artist community. Using public art pieces as both community identity builders and bollard to help delineate between street and sidewalk. 8. Pedestrian and Habitat - The pedestrian islands when planted act

as ground point for beginning habitat repair. Expanded

upon over time, parking spaces could be

removed or added depending on desire and small parks and outdoor space could be grown over time. The parking lot would grow or shrink depending of popularity of business or type of customers.9. Trees - Meant to provide shelter for both animals and pedestrians, trees help mitigate ground pollutants, and naturally help to percolate water down into the soil, acting as a

source of ground water replacement. 10. Planter - Existing planters can be expanded and allow more of a ground habitat, as well as provide for repatriate drainage systems.11. Prospect - The farmer’s market park acts as a place of relief, with open space and access to direct sun, plants are thinned and a meadow is created.

Ecology must play a role in the managing of our towns. Incorporating as many systems as possible adds to the complexity and vibrancy the main street. The canopy and ground restoration brings Vashon back into the landscape and important island species back backing into their native habitat.

12. Refuge – The second part of the main street pedestrian village allows refuge from the street, and shelter from the rain, while providing security and a hard-scape pedestrian/car, mixed use plaza. 13. Pavers – Like plants, pavers allow ground water filtration and percolation. Drainage is a major infrastructure issue within heavily

paved areas, and a implementation of a gradient of pavers throughout Main street allow for a variety of ground conditions, from heavily traffic parking lots, to open form, and gravel, meant to provide space for local plants and create a more sustainable condition.14. Canopy – Grown over time, the canopy can provide shelter from

weather and a sense of security. 15. Gravel – A self bounding gravel is much more permeable than stone. The bound gravel works with the stone and due to its formation once lightly compacted, becomes much more sturdy under foot than a loose gravel.

Proposed DensityChandigarh’s original density was designed with the car in mind and since then globalization and mass migration from surrounding villages has strained this plan and as such encourages a pedestrian and transit system.

Existing DesnityChandigarh’s super-blocks are over crowded, and the current bus system is outdated and based off old population statistics.
