Cobham Unmanned System' mission is "Todevelop machines, equipment and systems thatprotect or replace human beings in situationswhere their presence would be eitherimpossible or place them at great risk".

EOD / IEDDEquipment, EOD

Robots and ServiceVehicles

Whether the task at hand is disarming anImprovised Explosive Device (IED) with a remotecontrolled robot; investigating NBC hazardswith an unmanned sensor platform; ordeploying mobile, fully networkedmeasurement, monitoring and interventionsystems to ensure the safety and security ofcritical infrastructure, Cobham's top priority isalways the protection of people and theirsurroundings.

Cobham Unmanned Systems' product rangeincludes mobile unmanned sensor platformswith manipulators for taking samples of

suspicious substances; vehicles equipped withstate of the art robots for detecting anddisarming of Improvised Explosive andIncendiary Devices (IED's); and integrated mobilesystems for dealing with full spectrum ofasymmetric threats.

Remote ControlledRobotic Solutions

More than 700 Cobham Unmanned systems arein service today, supporting bomb disposalofficers and first responders in nations aroundthe world.

Distance means safety; this basic rule withregard to disarming explosive devices meansthat bomb disposal officers increasingly prefer

EOD Robots as their tool of choice.

Not only bomb disposal officers are exposedto a wide and varied range of hazards today;rescue forces and first responders increasinglyget into situations that involve an extremelyhigh level of personnel danger. Unmannedrobotic systems have been developed to allowinspection and deal with hazards from a safedistance.

Building on this exceptional experience base, highly advanced solutions can be offered today;semiautonomous and remote controlled robotsthat can take samples of suspected biologicalor chemical warfare agents, plus reconnaissanceplatforms for CBRNE detection.

telemax ExplosiveOrdnance (EOD)

RobotThe telemax robot is the most versatile EOD /Hazmat robot available on the market today. Itpacks up small enough to fit in the back of asmall SUV but is able to reach over 2,4m tall.

A four-track running gear has been used for thefirst time in a vehicle of this size, which offerssuperior mobility compared to other forms ofrunning gear. This means that it can handlegradients of 45° or 100% without difficulty. It canovercome obstacles of up to half a meter inheight without problems and also trenches of60 cm in width.

The basic principle of 'less is more' applies withspecial forces if the situation involves workingin confined spaces; in all cases where the bigEOD robot cannot be used its little brotherprovides that vital distance between the bombdisposal engineer and the explosive device (IED,EOD, Bomb) that can mean the differencebetween life and death: in aircraft, in subways,in buses or other means of public transport.

The telemax has a unique set of features makingit highly mobile and suitable for operating inconfined spaces; the four individuallyarticulating tracks are controlled separately andcan be moved individually in pairs or alltogether as desired. Additionally, an intelligentcontroller sets running gear configurations tocope with the relevant situation at the press ofa button.

These features make it easier for the operatorto control the vehicle, especially in trickysituations such as narrow stairways and highsteps. Inclination sensors ensure that the robotalways maintains its balance. If a travelling speedof 4 km/h is not enough, then the high speedversion offers up to 10 km/h.

The operating concept of the telemax is almostrevolutionary by comparison to other robots onthe market. It is the only EOD robot in the worldthat has a so-called TCP controller. TCP standshere for Tool Center Point, the middle point ofthe tool, or more simply, the gripper ordisruptor. This kind of manipulator controlmakes the telemax the best in class robot inmanipulation.

telemax is the only robot in this class that hastwo tool magazines incorporated into thechassis. This means two additional tools / firingsystems can be used on an operation withoutneeding to go back to the starting point. Themanipulator automatically takes out theadditional tools at the simple press of a button.

NBCmax CBRNEService Robot

The NBCmax service robot is a universal mobilesensor platform that can be equipped with abroad palette of sensors to detect andinvestigate chemical, biological, explosive ortoxic substances (CBRNE).

Not only bomb disposal engineers are exposedto a wide and varied range of hazards today.Rescue forces and first responders such as thefire service, technical rescue specialists orinternational aid forces increasingly findthemselves in situations that involve anextremely high level of personal danger. Thisincludes operations that involve hazardousmaterials, toxic substances or even biologicallyharmful materials such as viruses or bacteria.Once such substances have been released-whether through accidents or intentionally-therescue forces are exposed to maximum dangerif working manually.

The NBCmax has been developed to allow theresponse forces to inspect, and if applicabledeal with hazards from a safe distance. The datacollected, ranging from gas concentration and

gamma radiation through to evidence ofexplosives, is transmitted back to the controlpanel of the robot to be processed by theoperator.

tEODor ExplosiveOrdnance (EOD)

RobottEODor is an Explosive Ordnance Disposal(EOD) and observation robot that sets thestandard worldwide.

Distance means safety; robust, reliable andflexible in use, the innovative bomb disposalsystem provides a maximum degree of safetyand protection. The basic model is designed asa twin-track vehicle with extremely goodmanoeuvrability and good properties on openground; the running gear, equipped with sprungrollers, is characterised by the ability to climb atangles of up to 45°. The individual links of therobust steel track can be easily replaced if theybecome worn or damaged.

The high-torque drive units work withcontinuous four-quadrant control, bothbackwards and forwards. Both the vehicle andthe manipulator can be operated with extremedelicacy. When the vehicle stops on slopes orgradients the safety brakes operateautomatically to hold the vehicle in place.

EOD - IEDD TEL600Service Vehicles

The TEL600 series is a family of vehicles whichdeal with the demanding tasks associated withthe location, identification and removal ofexplosive and incendiary devices, especially inthe event that there is suspicion of a dirty bomb. The range encompasses a compact RapidResponse (S) vehicle based on a fast four wheeldrive (4X4) vehicle to take immediate action atthe crime scene; medium-sized (M) search anddetection vehicles for location andidentification operations; and fully equipped IED/ NBC response systems (L) weighing up to 8tons.

The XL and XXL systems, based on medium-sized and heavy trucks, represent the higheststandard in Bomb Disposal vehicles, providingsecurity personnel with the optimum amountof equipment to cover every eventuality. Kitranges from a simple hook and line set throughto various EOD robots and unmannedreconnaissance platforms, all the way up to aNBC robot with a fully automatic system to takesamples and investigate hazardous biologicalmaterials. Systems are made-to-order based onindividual customer specifications.

Live Fire GroundTarget Training

Our equipment can be used indoors or out andis rugged, reliable, highly accurate, flexible, easyto use and configure, and can run differenttraining combinations simultaneously. Thesystem produces instantaneous resultswirelessly to the firer or instructor on a firingpoint monitor, enabling rapid analysis andimprovement of performance. This informationis also available at a central range controller foranalysis by the Range Officer or stored forfuture use. Our systems are in servicethroughout the world in a variety of differentenvironments. The system uses acoustic scoringtechnology, meaning there are no falserecordings from stones and debris. Larger scaleversions are available for tank gunnery trainingusing heavy duty targets and lifters and like theirsmaller counterparts can be made to pop-upand down, fall when hit and move on rails.

Live Fire Air toGround Target

TrainingWe also supply systems for training andassessing the performance of a pilot in the air-to-ground strafing and bombing role. UsingWindows®-based software, the strafe systemrecords details of the pilot, aircraft type and

registration, stores type and attack profile. Itproduces instantaneous results that are relayedback to the control tower which can then bepassed onto the pilot and recorded for laterdetailed analysis. Like the ground trainingsystem, it uses acoustic technology to reducefalse triggers. The bombing system is semi-automatic and consists of two sightingquadrants that are used to triangulate the fall ofthe bomb. An operator logs the angularmeasurement which is then sent by UHF link tothe tower where the software displays thebomb position on screen to be relayed to thepilot. Both systems have been designed to be

BallisticInstrumentation

Projectile VelocityMeasuring System

(PVMS)Our comprehensive range of instrumentationcan be used to measure all the ballisticparameters of subsonic and supersonicprojectiles. Our sensors can be connectedeither by cable or wirelessly to a single RangeProcessor, be it a standard PC or laptop. By usingGPS to locate every event, in both time andspace, the information recorded is extremelyaccurate. The company provides its ownBallisticsDB software giving full control anddiagnostics of the connected equipment as wellas data warehousing and statistical analysiscapabilities. The system is Windows®-based forease of operation. Our Projectile VelocityMeasuring System (PVMS) can measurevelocities extremely accurately to within 0.02%in bright or low light conditions and has beensold around the world. We can provide all theequipment required to create an entire testrange to customer requirements.

Automated FlightFollower (AFF)

SystemWhere normal ballistic instrumentation is notenough, and for a more detailed analysis of theflight of a projectile, MS Instruments hasdeveloped a fully Automated Flight Followersystem (AFF).

This was developed to meet the high speedimaging needs of modern ammunition designersand manufacturers. The system allows the userto see quickly any flaws within the ammunitionthat would otherwise be invisible, saving timeand further costly trials. The images producedare so detailed that you can actually see thesupersonic shock wave being created by the

projectile.

The system uses a high speed camera (themodel of which can be specified by thecustomer) and computer controlled rotatingmirror programmed to rotate at the correctspeed such that the camera will follow theprojectile in flight. The dedicated analysissoftware is able to record velocity, dragcorrection, trigger delay and is also able tocalculate and show even minor yaw and pitchvariations.

Forensic WeaponTesting and Analysis

MS Instruments’ equipment can be used forforensic investigations to identify weapon orammunition performance in forensic cases andto train officers in recognising shot patterns. Weprovide equipment for ballistic gel analysis forboth evidence gathering purposes and the studyand demonstration of the effects of a projectileon body tissue. We also supply the software todeliver accurate analytical results, and thenecessary equipment to make up ballistic gel toexacting standards. Our projectile velocitymeasurement systems (PVMS) and strawboardimager can assist in weapon and ammunitionidentification and for gathering information oncharacterisation of fragment size, energy and

distribution. Information gathered can helpdetermine lethality of a projectile and providecrucial evidence in a case.

Our forensic equipment is in service with policeforces and forensic laboratories throughout theUK.

Nimbus Non-LethalVehicle Protection

SystemNimbus comprises a series of covertly fittedpyrotechnic devices that are fired from withinthe vehicle to distract, disorientate and depriveattackers of any advantage. Using smoke, soundand airburst units, the system gives the edgeback to the inhabitants of the vehicle.Completely controlled from within the vehicle,it provides an effective countermeasure bycreating a dense smoke screen, while soundand flash-bang units disorientate the attacker(s),scattering any shots fired. These units can bedeployed individually, as a single bank on eitherside or all at once. Nimbus can also incorporatea tracker that can alert the home base or mobilephone device that the system has been fired, giving an exact location anywhere in the world, enabling appropriate action to be taken.

Ballistic TestingOur wholly owned subsidiary, Wiltshire BallisticServices (WBS), has been undertaking ballistictrials in its dedicated ballistic test facility foralmost 30 years. It offers a secure indoor firingrange and is completely independent from anyarmour or weapons manufacturer.

40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN ARMOUR MOBILITYThanks to almost 40 years of experience, TSSInternational specialises in Armour Mobility:keeping special (armoured) vehicles moving andenabling them to get to safety in the hardest ofcircumstances. Whether you need runflatsystems, heavy duty alloy wheels, protectedfuel tanks, heavy-vehicle brake systems orvehicle intercoms, TSS aims to provide you withthe best products and highest service to meetyour mobility requirements.

Mobility is a vehicle’s most important asset, TSSInternational makes sure your vehicle gets to usethat asset as long as possible.TSS International: Armour Mobility

Rodgard RunflatSystems

A vehicle’s traction and control is greatlydetermined by its tyres. Normally, when a tyreis punctured, traction and control are rapidlyreduced, because the tyre is no longer held inplace and will eventually remove itself from thewheel. Rodgard Runflat Systems make sure thetyre remains in place and keeps contactbetween the vehicle and the road, providing fullcontrol over the vehicle, even with more thanone flat tyre.

Rodgard Runflat Systems are available indifferent configurations, with flat tyre mobilityranging from 15 to 80 km at speeds suitable to

get to a safe location.

Rodgard Runflat systems are available forstandard 1-piece rims ranging in size from 13 to22.5 inch in diameter.Rodgard Runflat Systems comply to FinabelStandards.

TSS Heavy DutyWheels

TSS has developed wheels especially for luxuryarmoured vehicles. These 1-piece alloy wheelshave a TuV certified pay-load of 1800 kgs perwheel and are especially designed to giveoptimum performance with Rodgard APX

Runflat Systems and StopTech Big Brake Kits.Ballistic testing has shown these wheels do notcrack when shot at, making them very suitablefor the hardest circumstances. Vehicles servedby these wheels are among others: ToyotaLandcruiser 200 V8, Mercedes-Benz G-class,Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Range Rover,Land Rover Defender, GMC Suburban, VWTouareg, Mercedes-Benz S-class, Hyundai Equusand Lexus LS and LX.

Special development: Rodgard APX RunflatSystems. Designed to get the most mobility outof your TSS Heavy Duty Wheels.

MOV’IT SecurityHeavy Duty Brakes

for ArmouredVehicles

The added weight of an armoured vehicle’sprotection has its effects on the original brakes. To make sure your vehicle can safely stop, morethan once, heavy duty brake upgrades arerequired.

MOV’IT Heavy Duty Security Brakes deliver themost consistent and best performance with:• High grade steel calipers• Larger and thicker rotors and brake pads

for more friction surface and heat

• Braided, stainless steel brake lines

• Better balance for the added weight and

higher centre of gravity

MOV’IT Security heavy duty brake systems for

armoured vehicles are now exclusively available

at TSS International.

TSS ProtecTank - FuelSystem Protection

By converting your standard fuel tank into a TSS

ProtecTank, you protect yourself and your

passengers against leakage, explosion and fire

which can be caused by your fuel tank being

shot at. A fuel tank being shot at is at its most

dangerous when it is half empty, due to the high

flammability of the fumes. TSS ProtecTank

technology minimises explosions, self-seals

ruptures and limits the effect of any external

fire.

And last but not least: TSS ProtecTank makes

sure your vehicle gets to use its main energy

source as long as possible: its fuel.

TSS ProtecTank makes use of the OEM fuel tank,

and is tailor made to fit your vehicle.

CarVox VehicleIntercoms

Sometimes opening the window or door of

your armoured vehicle is simply not an option,

due to the surroundings not being safe enough.

So, when approaching a roadblock or

checkpoint, how do you communicate with the

people on the outside of your vehicle? CarVox

Vehicle Intercoms allow you to have a two-way

conversation with someone on the outside of

your vehicle, without having to compromise the

safety of your armour. This semi-duplex system

is easy to use, can be equipped with a siren

and/or PA function, and is available in many

configurations for many different applications

(i.e. prisoner transport, limousines, cash-in-

transit etc.).

Argon Electronics tosupply Plume SIMCBRN SimulationSystem to FederalAgency, Germany Argon Electronics has been awarded a contractto supply CBRN simulation systems toTechnische Hilfswerk (THW - the FederalAgency for Technical Relief), part of Germany’sFederal Ministry of the Interior. Suppliedthrough OWR, Argon’s representative, theworld-class simulation systems will be used toimprove the realism of THW’s field training, which prepares its teams on how to respond toa CBRN incident.

CBRN SimulationSystems

Over the last two years, THW has been workingto enhance the CBRN field training that itprovides to its 80,000 strong team ofvolunteers at its training base at Neuhausen, near Stuttgart. A core focus of this training is ondealing with various radiological hazards.

Improving the realism of its practical trainingwas a key challenge for THW to overcome. Toaid with response training, it was vital thatstudents would be able to see exactly how ameasuring device would react in the face of areal radiological threat.

As part of the contract, Argon is providing FH40 G-SIM simulated survey meters and EPD-Mk2-SIM simulated dosimeters. These will becombined with Argon’s PlumeSIM trainingsystem that creates realistic table top and livearea radiological training scenarios and allowsinstructors to monitor their students in real timeand provide valuable analysis and feedbackafter the exercise. Argon Electronics hassupplied similar systems to CBRN trainingfacilities and organisations in the USA, UK,Ireland, Sweden and Canada.

THW Radiation Protection Officer, SebastianKroll, notes, “Argon’s simulation system willconsiderably improve the realism of our CBRNfield training and will help our students to betterunderstand what to do in the event of a realradiological incident. This is a key element fortheir safety. Argon’s system also offers us theopportunity to be flexible in usage and to addfurther CBRN training components if requiredin the future.”

THW work with local authorities in Germany toprovide local and national disaster relief andwork internationally on behalf of the GermanFederal Government.

IOWA – 8 July 2014. HESCO defensive barriersare best known for protecting soldiers fromattack during deployment in conflict zones, butthroughout the Quad Cities, HESCO barriershave been defending against a different kind ofthreat; the Mississippi River.

With Iowa County declared as a local disasterby the State Emergency Operations Center(SEOC) Iowa officials deployed HESCO floodbarriers to protect property and businessesfrom the rising river, and HESCO Bastion sent itsTechnical Support Team to assist with theinstallation.

HESCO team member Aaron Ackley, a US Armyveteran, has extensive experience deployingHESCO earth-filled barriers around the worldfrom tropical storms in Thailand to Hurricane

Isaac in the US. During the construction of aHESCO flood wall around Cole’s Mobile HomeCourt along the Iowa River, he met RichardTaylor, a resident of Johnson County. Richardspoke about his son who had served overseaswith US Army and had first-hand experiencewith HESCO barriers:

“My son was telling me about these HESCObaskets and how they protected him in Iraq, butI never thought they would end up saving myhome too.”

HESCO defensive barriers are used to buildprotective perimeters and accommodationbunkers, creating save havens for soldiers in themost volatile of places, and now, whenreturning home and faced with losing all theirpossession in another season of flooding,

soldiers and their families can be assured thatthe same level of protection they rely on duringdeployment will now protect them here athome.

effectively across a wide range of temperatures. They are designed to deliver sustainedperformance in these arduous conditions andoffer significant through-life cost benefits to theaircraft. Mean Time Between Failure is in excessof 13,000 hours for the landing light and 14,000hours for the taxi light, compared to halogenunits which typically require replacement afteras little as 2.5 hours of service in theseenvironments.

The new LED lights are totally self-containedand are designed as “plug and play” to alloweasy retrofitting of LED units to replace halogenlights. The Saab landing and taxi lights is alsoNVG (Night Vision Goggle) friendly and emitsignificantly less infra-red radiation than astandard halogen light.

Oxley has received a production order for thesupply of 140 shipsets of lights with deliverystarting in August and continuing through toOctober 2015. Oxley currently supplies wing tip, tail light, position lights and the control box forthe aircraft external lighting system on theGripen C & D variants.

The SaabGripen Combat

AircraftThe new order reflects Oxley long-termstrategic relationship with Saab Aerospace as a

key customer and product technologydevelopment partner. A team from Oxleyrecently visited Saab in Sweden to discuss thelatest progress on the Gripen fighter jetprogramme.

Both of the new lights exceed currentoperational requirements, with the NVGFriendly™ High Intensity LED Landing Lightdelivering a peak intensity greater than200,000cd, while the rugged High Intensity LEDTaxi Light has a peak intensity performancegreater than 27,000cd.

Powered directly from the aircraft’s 115V/400Hzsupply, without the requirement for an externalsupply, the lights use significantly less powerthan existing technology – just 65W for thelanding light and 37W for the taxi light. Bothunits are extremely robust and benefit from atoughened borosilicate clear glass lens and analuminium housing with a matt black hardanodised finish.

Both of the units are qualified IAW MIL-STD-810F and RCTA DO-160F Aerospace standards.
