FOREWORD

Welcome to Flight Insight’s Military Fleet Report 2009, brought to you in association with L-3. Prepared us-ing data held within Flight’s MiliCAS and HeliCAS premium products, the report provides a snapshot of the

active global military aircraft fleet as of 1 January 2009. The analysis has been structured throughout by present-ing total active numbers by geographic region for combat aircraft, transports/tankers and combat helicopters.

The inspiration behind the report came from a desire to showcase Flight Insight’s unique ability to interpret in-house fleet data on more than 40,000 aircraft, predominantly down to individual tail number. The result is a product which looks far beyond the numerical information traditionally included in Flight International’s an-nual World Air Forces directory to reveal regional and equipment trends across a spectrum of military aircraft.

Main categories of the report include detailed assessments of the current equipment profiles of NATO’s 26 nations, including dominant power the United States, plus overviews of the Asia-Pacific and Latin America re-gions. Finally, we look at the military aircraft infrastructure in India, which has recently opened itself up to the procurement of new-generation platforms from the United States, Russia and potentially Europe. With a contest now under way to procure at least 126 new medium multirole combat aircraft for its strengthening air force, India represents a market that will only grow in significance for defence contractors over the years to come.

In terms of a worldwide overview, it is not surprising to notice that the United States is the main force within NATO, with its armed forces having a 61% share of the alliance’s total military aircraft fleet. Over-all, the North America region accounts for the largest share of the world’s military transports/tankers, with the United States dominating this 41% stake. However, its massive inventory includes several de-cades-old types in need of rapid replacement, such as the US Air Force’s earliest Boeing KC-135 tankers.

Our analysis further reveals that Germany has the oldest fleet in NATO for transports/tankers, while Den-mark has the newest aircraft in the same market group, following the introduction of its Lockheed Mar-tin C-130Js. Poland has the youngest combat aircraft fleet within the alliance, with our data only including age information on its new fleet of 48 Lockheed F-16s, deliveries of which concluded in December 2008.

Asia-Pacific nations boast a solid fleet of combat aircraft, with the region accounting for 30% of the world’s total strike inventory. China is by far the leading power in the area in equipment terms, with its military might totalling some 2,516 combat aircraft. In Latin America, Brazil stands out in terms of fleet size, while trans-ports/tankers in both Honduras and Uruguay have an average age much older than for the rest of the region.

As evidenced in the Top 10 equipment tables featured throughout the report, US-operated types such as the F-16, C-130 and Sikorsky S-70-series helicopters dominate the most-used type categories. Excluding Rus-sia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, the venerable Northrop F-5 is the only combat aircraft which features prominently in the listings across all of the world’s regions. The same applies for the C-130 in the transport category, while models from within the highly successful Mil Mi-8/17/171 family of com-bat helicopters feature in the Top 10 rotary-wing tables of all the world regions, apart from North America.

Finally, the report includes a sample of technical descriptions and cutaway drawings of several fight-er, transport and tanker aircraft, plus battlefield helicopters, to highlight some of the other organic ca-pabilities held within the Flight group. From detailing and analysing the world’s military aircraft inven-tory through bespoke reports, to providing breaking news coverage, sector-specific newsletters or even crafting unique artwork for commercial customers, you can rely on Flight to deliver an unrivalled service.

We hope that you will enjoy reading this report.
