In conventional Electronic Warfare (EW) orElectronic Countermeasure (ECM) systems,Instantaneous Frequency Measurement (IFM)receivers measure the frequency of a radar pulsein real time. However, due to the architecturesof these systems, it is difficult to measure twosimultaneous frequencies.

Monobit Receivers were developed to address this problem. A monobit receiver is a single-bit analog to digital converter, plus advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to extract the frequency and phase information. A key enabling technology for monobit receivers is the monobit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), as it determines the maximum input signal frequency and measurement bandwidth.

Traditional Receiver Chain Using Multiple IF Stages.

Direct Conversion Receiver Using Inphi 1821TH.

A traditional receiver uses multiple IF stages, with mixers, local oscillators (LOs), filters, etc. Inphi’s high bandwidth Track and Hold Amplifiers (THA), with input analog bandwidth of up to 18 GHz, enable direct conversion receiver architectures by extending the input analog bandwidth of commercially available ADCs. This results in systems with less lower power, smaller size, and lower cost.

The next generation of radio telescopes, with large arrays of smaller antennas, is driving much higher computational and interconnect bandwidths. However, traditional radio astronomy instrumentation is highly customized for

software to perform analyses such as beam forming and wide band spectroscopy.

An essential element of these systems is a high speed digital spectrometer that directly digitizes the downconverted IF

enables these next generation digital spectrometers to operate with higher bandwidth, higher resolution, lower power, and lower cost.

04Phase Locked LoopPhase locked loops (PLL) are used for many high speed communications applications such as frequency synthesizers, clock and data recovery, and frequency multipliers. In the highest performance applications, discrete prescalers (frequency dividers) are used to support frequencies beyond the range of integrated PLL chips.

Digital Pattern Generator Using Inphi’s Multiplexer Products.

High Speed Digitizer Using Inphi’s Demultiplexer Products.

A high performance pattern generator that can generate arbitrary digital patterns is commonly used in R&D and testing applications to stimulate, debug, and test digital signal processing systems. Inphi’s high speed multiplexer solutions enable digital pattern generation at up to 50 Gbps.

The high speed digitizer, the counterpart to the digital pattern generator, is the workhorse of high speed electronics systems. Inphi’s high speed demultiplexer solutions enable digital data acquisition at up to 50 Gbps.
