Dear Parents and Community
Welcome back to Term 3. I trust that you all had a relaxing holiday with family and friends. We have a very busy term ahead of us but our students have already settled back into the classroom with a positive attitude and determination to succeed.
WELCOME All the Miling PS staff and students would like to extend a very warm welcome to Haiden and Kohl. We are all very excited to have two new friends join our school and have all tried very hard to help them both settle in. We hope that you both love Miling as much as we do.
CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all of our students who competed in the Colin Moore Cross Country Championships last term. It was fantastic to see everyone displaying our core values of respect, perseverance, cooperation and kindness throughout the day. I was very proud to see all of our students trying their best whilst displaying exceptional sportsmanship. Congratulations to Eliza Seymour, Kiara Bailey, Heidi Seymour, Summer Lewis, Tommy McNamara and Riley White, who all finished in the top ten of their division. This Friday the North Midlands Cross Country Championships is being held at Eneabba and I would like to wish all of our competitors the best of luck.
NATURE PLAY OPENING Wow, what a fantastic event our nature play opening was! Thank you to all of our parents and community members who attended and stayed for the sun downer. I am continually blown away by the amount of support our school receives by local community members and parents. The nature play area is a brilliant addition to our beautiful school and will assist in many learning experiences whilst also promoting and encouraging
imaginative play. Thank you to the nature play committee, Olivia Mincherton, Joey Seymour and Helmi Seymour, for their hard work in coordinating such a wonderful community effort to complete the nature play area and organise the grand opening. Thank you to the many parents and family members whom gave up countless hours to attend busy bees in the area, many hands really do make light work! Thank you also to all of our fantastic sponsors and donors who enabled our nature play concept to come to life. Please see the full nature play spread for a list of all of our special sponsors, donors and helpers.
PEAC TESTING Next Tuesday, our Year 4 students will participate in the annual Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) testing. The ILN provide a PEAC program that allows selected students the opportunity to develop higher order process skills and in-depth investigation skills, and to work on open-ended activities which encourage choice and negotiation.
NAIDOC Next Thursday, our Kindy to Year 6 students will be heading across to Moora for a NAIDOC Day excursion. Our students will be grouped with students from Moora PS, Dandaragan PS, Watheroo PS and St Joseph’s PS, and will complete a number of activities such as damper making, stone painting and boomerang throwing. In our 2015-2017 Business Plan, we wanted to incorporate Aboriginal Perspectives across the Curriculum as well as focus on Aboriginal Incursions and celebrate NAIDOC Week. Joining the schools within our cluster to celebrate NAIDOC Week will allow our students to interact with peers from the district and gain a better understanding of Aboriginal Culture.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT … cont
KINDY Our four wonderful Kindy students, Zoe, Caitlyn, Kohl and Xavier, are all very happy to be attending school three days a week this semester. They now attend Monday, Tuesday and Thursday which has got Mrs Lehmann and Miss Huggins very excited because they have so many fun and educational activities to do.
HOME READERS It is great to see the number of students reading aloud daily to their parents. Reading aloud with children has many benefits such as developing stronger vocabulary, building connections between the spoken and written word, providing enjoyment, increasing attention span, strengthening cognition, providing a safe way of exploring emotions and promoting child/parent bonding. Just a reminder that our Home Reading program encourages students to read aloud to a parent or caregiver, reading the levelled books assigned at school. The books students borrow from the Library are for their pleasure, and whilst they can be read aloud, we don’t record them in our Home Reading log.
POWER OUTAGE On Wednesday 9 August, some of the Miling township will be without power from 7:30am to 6pm. The Administration building of the school will be affected, however, the classrooms are on a different line so will be operating as normal. Please note, our Week 4 Newsletter will be published on Tuesday the 8th.
Thank you for a great start to Term 3, I’m excited for a fantastic semester!
Kind regards
ASHLYN SIVIOUR
