Mililani High School has already had the first football game on the completed field. The field looks great, and will look even better when one of our local Eagle Scout candidates completes a project painting the stands. I have observed that more students are walking and bik- ing to school. This is great exercise, but some of the intersections they cross are in need of signage and crosswalks. In particular, the turn off to the Mauka McDonalds on Meheula Parkway gives no indication that pedestrians will be crossing. I have asked the Department of Transportation Services and Councilmember Mar- tin‟s office to look into the placement of signage a.s.a.p. 25th Anniversary Year of Mililani’s All America City Award

Dear Friends,

School is back in session, and many activities are resum-

ing. Mililani High School has already had the first football game

on the completed field. The field looks great, and will look even

better when one of our local Eagle Scout candidates completes a

project painting the stands.

I have observed that more students are walking and bik-

ing to school. This is great exercise, but some of the intersections

they cross are in need of signage and crosswalks. In particular,

the turn off to the Mauka McDonalds on Meheula Parkway gives

no indication that pedestrians will be crossing. I have asked the

Department of Transportation Services and Councilmember Mar-

tin‟s office to look into the placement of signage a.s.a.p.

Members of the Friends of Mililani Public Library were

at the Town Center of Mililani on August 18 with an information

booth about library activities. If you are not yet a member, you

may obtain an application at the Library.

The Town Center celebrated its 25th anniversary this past

Saturday. Many of us remember when it was just a pineapple

field!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and especially the upcom-

ing Holiday weekend.

Aloha,

Marilyn Lee- Representative, District 38

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CELEBRATED

On August 3rd I attended a welcome back assembly at Mililani

High School to recognize Mililani High‟s participation in Ha-

wai„i History Day, and recognize nine students who qualified

and traveled to the National contest in College Park, Maryland.

The student honorees included: Alemarie Ceria; Virginia Gustaf-

son; Nanea I; Megan Madeira; Viola Mocz; Alohilani Nonies;

Myla Pereira; Carson Turner; and Isis Usborne. Megan Madiera

and Alohilani Nonies earned the “Outstanding State Entry, Sen-

ior Division” award at the National History Day contest for their

Senior Group Documentary project titled “The 1954 Democratic

Revolution in Hawai„i.”

In addition, social studies teachers Cynthia Tong and Amy Per-

ruso received the 2012 Patricia E. Behring National History Day

Teacher of the Year, Senior Division, and the 2012 Hawai„i His-

tory Teacher of the Year, respectively. Congratulations to all of

On the next episode of Kukui Connection, Representative Lee

talks with Coral Andrews, Executive Director of the Hawaii

Health Connector, a state-based health insurance exchange.

Ms. Andrews will discuss the Hawaii Health Connector and

what it will do for healthcare in Hawaii, the timeline of estab-

lishing the Connector before the Jan. 1, 2012 launch date, and

how you can get more information throughout its develop-

ment. Hawaii was the first state to declare its intent on devel-

oping a health insurance exchange, and most recently, has is-

sued a request for proposals for construction of the online

marketplace.

The interview with Ms. Andrews can be seen on Channel 54 at

4:00 pm on Sunday, August 26 and Sunday, September 2.

KUKUI CONNECTION H-2 LIGHTING PROJECT FINALLY COMPLETED

The lights on the H-2 Freeway are finally back on! Paul‟s Elec-

tric has just completed the 2.4 million dollar H-2 Lighting Re-

conductoring Project. Copper thieves have kept the H-2 Free-

way in the dark for a couple of years so the completion of this

project has been long-awaited. The DOT said they will secure

the street light base access panels with a special bolt to prevent

unauthorized entry by Copper thieves. Last session I introduced

HB 2107, which would have required that scrap metal dealers

purchase only purchase copper from licensed contractors but

unfortunately the bill was deferred in Committee.

The Friends of the Mililani Public Library (FMOPL) will be

holding a book sale on Saturday, August 25 from 10:00 am to

3:00 pm at the Mililani Public Library. The FOMPL assists

the Mililani Public Library to expand and promote library

services and invites community members to join in supporting

this wonderful resource. Membership applications can be

found at the library. Please come out and support your local

library!

BLESSING CEREMONY HELD FOR NEW FIELD

TURF AT MILILANI HIGH SCHOOL

On Friday, July 20th, Mililani High School held a blessing and

dedication ceremony for the new field turf and track at John

Kauinana Stadium (see picture at bottom). The 2.5 million dollar

project to install an artificial field turf and track improvements

was completed on July 16. The hard work of a strong Mililani

Legislative Team made these much-needed improvements possi-

ble.

H-1 ZIPPERLANE NOW OPEN TO VEHICLES

WITH 2 OR MORE PASSENGERS

The State Department of Transportation (DOT) has an-

nounced new changes to the H-1 ZipperLane requirements.

To help maintain traffic flow during peak hours, DOT is al-

lowing vehicles with 2 or more passengers to use the Zipper

Lane for the full operating hours from 5:30 to 8:30 am during

weekday morning rush-hours. More access to the ZipperLane

was encouraged by myself and members of the Transportation

Committee so I am pleased that this change has taken place.

The new requirement was implemented on August 13th.
