Saturday 15th February dawned a cloudy but potentially very hot day; what a surprise! Perfect for ‘fashions on the field’ no doubt, but despite that, some may have preferred a wet or at least a cloudy day! Miles races present an opportunity for everyone to dress up and they certainly did! Despite the oppressive heat, the attendance was good, shade was at a premium and refreshments provided a welcome relief. Beside the races, there were the usual ‘fashion on the field’ competitions, best dressed ladies, best couples, best teen fashion and best dressed male (which took a bit of encouragement to entice the odd entrant!). It really was the ladies who stole the show - with the exception of a certain gentleman who, leaving his wife to strut her stuff, stole the show as he did his own ‘twirly thing’ on the end of the runway

- much to her surprise when she turned around – we won’t say who he was will we, Sonya! Judges were Bobby Gorring, Emma Herron and Michelle Minge, who creates her own line of millinery, ‘Millinery by Michelle’. Representatives from ‘Style Magazine’ organized and ran the competitions. Thanks to the hard work Domonic Kerwick put in over the preceding week, the track was in good shape and apart from a jockey injury in the second race, the afternoon went without any obvious problems. Michael Kelly, deputy chairman of the ‘Queensland Thoroughbred Racing Board’ attended the presentations. There was musical entertainment planned for the evening and I’m sure, many stayed to the end. At least, the evening was slightly cooler than the day!

It’s hard to believe March is here already, it feels as though the year has just begun, yet here we are almost at Easter again! With March of course comes the change of season, and the start of Autumn and hopefully some cooler weather, maybe even some rain if we’re lucky!

This month we have a wonderful story from one of our new contributors, Chantahl Stedman, who has written a story on the very talented photographer, Scott Bridle. You will see some of his amazing photographs and read all about his story on pages 16 - 17 of this edition.

We also have another new contributor from the local area, Cindy Coggan of Meandarra, who brings us a story of the Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships which you can find on page 29 of this edition.

There are some exciting events coming up in the region; Lindsay Williams Shield, and the Wandoan Races, which you can read all about in this edition. Keep an eye out in next month’s edition for all the photos from these wonderful events!

Enjoy your first Autumn Edition of the Tara & District Magazine for 2014.

A Short History On The “Lindsay Williams Shield”Wandoan Sport & Recreation first held the Lindsay Williams Shield on the 28th February, 2009, when the sporting field was officially named in memory of Lindsay and the first round robin Senior League Competition was played.

Bob and Judy Williams and their children have been strong and supportive community members of Wandoan for many years, with Bob holding positions in many Clubs within the community over the years. Lindsay’s love of football and of all sport started in Wandoan when he joined the local Junior Rugby League and this continued through his school years in Wandoan and then he furthered his sporting career when he went away. Lindsay was an accomplished athlete, not only in football, but was also selected for Junior Cricket and played a mean game of golf. Lindsay was a front rower who played in three premierships and state title winning Brisbane Valleys sides and in the early 90’s captained Toowoomba Valleys to a premiership and from there, he was chosen to play for Queensland Country. Unfortunately and unexpectedly, Lindsay passed away at too early of an age. The Wandoan Sport & Recreation Committee felt that we wished to honour Lindsay and with his family’s approval, named our new oval in his memory. Each year since then, teams from Toowoomba, Tara, Wallumbilla and Taroom/Wandoan play against each other for the honour of holding the shield for the year. This is the only Senior League game that is played in Wandoan and it is always very well attended and supported by local and away community/business members, with an average attendance each year of approximately 400 – 500 persons.

Once again, there will be a round robin competition on the 8th March, 2014, where the Taroom/Wandoan Battlers will be playing in special jerseys being made to remember four young men who have been fatally taken from our community over the years. These four young men, Bevan Watson, Chris Hall, Jacko Sattler and Russell Poole all played for the Wandoan Wildcats Junior League and the young men who played with these lads wished to remember their mates by playing in a special jersey

on the day. Our Club will also have another set of these jerseys that will be auctioned after the grand final has been played and the shield presented. We are expecting a big crowd to attend, as all of these young men, Lindsay, Bevan, Chris, Jacko and Russell are sadly missed by their family and many mates, here and away.

Australia Day in MilesAfter Kylie Bourne cut Western Australia off, the entire continent disappeared in about 10 minutes. Fortunately for us all, it was only a cake, albeit large and specially made for ‘Australia Day 2014’! One enthusiastic youngster wanted to demolish the whole of Tasmania but had to settle for a smaller piece of the island.

The Australia Day Presentation Ceremony was held at Morgan Place, in front of the Miles Historical Village and was well attended. The Chinchilla Band was there in force and many locals were able to catch up with friends they had not seen for a while.

Lars Olsen, Australia Day Ambassador - 2014, gave a talk on the circumstances that led to him founding the ‘Forget-me-not’ orphanage in Nepal. Mark and his wife are based in Hervey Bay, but he returns regularly to Nepal and to the orphanage.

A variety of awards were presented and recipients included: Bruce Mellor – Cultural Award,

Stephanie Pile – Junior Sporting Award (for clay pigeon shooting) and Deborah Acason – Senior Sporting Award. This year, Deborah is going for her fourth Commonwealth Games and she hopes, for her sixth medal. Kylie Bourne – Citizen of the Year Award, Christopher Bender - Young Citizen of the Year, Wayne Collie (‘Cabbage’) won an award for coaching A grade football and a ‘Project Event of the Year’ Award went to the ‘Condamine State School 150th Celebration Committee’ - bit of a mouthful there!

The day was somewhat cooler than the preceding few weeks had been, making for a balmy Australia Day – at least in Miles!

Australia Day Award For Relieving Taroom ParamedicAlong with four other Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) recipients across the State, Kendall Cox was humbled to receive a Certificate of Achievement as part of the Australia Day Awards last month.

While acting in the Taroom Officer-in-Charge position for seven months, Kendall was recognised for his high achievements in pre-hospital healthcare, by implementing strategies towards better care for Queenslanders in medical need.

Kendall’s work in re-establishing the Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) and recruiting volunteer ambulance drivers has made a lasting

impact on the Taroom Community, and will no doubt ensure a more robust frontline service.

“Regional towns, like Taroom, rely on the community to step up and look out for one another. By re-establishing these vital volunteer services, community safety is greatly enhanced,” he said.

“Volunteers, like LAC President - Mr Murray Dingwall, Secretary - Mrs Ann Foster and Treasurer - Mr Bill Hickey, their fellow members and our volunteer drivers will make a world of difference to the service and to the Community alike.”

Noonga Community NotesNoonga Dance

While it was not quite a “Hot Summer’s Night” or even a “Rainy Summer’s Night” which everyone would have hoped for, those attending this year’s Noonga Dance enjoyed the evening of talking and dancing. Alluding to a summer’s night, the hall was decked out

with special laser lights, yellow balloons, stars, suns, moons, fans, beach towels and sunset vistas photos. Even a figure and his dog were spotted cooling off with a swim under the stars!

Popular novelty dances were held with Jim and Deirdree Walker playing their cards right and winning the Monte Carlo. David and Lyn Bowden of Roma chose to stand under the lonely orange balloon and won the Lucky Spot Dance.

The Noonga Community Association would like to make special mention of those who donated prizes for the

evening. A night at Possum Park has become a very popular annual prize and

Helen Golden chose the right time to arrive and won the Lucky Door. Helen also

won a year’s subscription to the ‘Western Star’. Chester Turvey had the winning

ticket for a subscription to the ‘Chinchilla News’. Eric Kent was fortunate to win a $100

voucher from Foodworks in Miles.

In between dancing, socializing and winning prizes, everyone had time to enjoy a delicious

homemade supper. Thank you to everyone for coming and ensuring that Noonga’s annual

fundraiser was a success!

Lazer Skirmish

Recently, about 30 kids had an enjoyable time tearing around the Noonga bush while having a shoot out at the opposing team. A night of Lazer Skirmish was organised between the Maranoa Community Development officer, Penny Howland, and the Noonga Community Association and was held as part of the school holiday activities’ agenda.

Congratulations

Clancy Sinnamon would like to thank the Noonga Community Association for their wonderful support and for nominating him for an Australia Day Award. Clancy was awarded the Maranoa Regional Council Wallumbilla and District Australia Day Cultural Award.

From the Maranoa Regional Council Website, the following news article was copied: “Clancy has matured into a well respected member of the youth in the Noonga community.

Since receiving his first filming camera at the age of 9, he has developed a love, understanding and respect for the movie making industry, an industry where Clancy’s dream goal is to write and produce movies.

He is always in pursuit of a good story line for his next film and recently produced You Tube sensations, “The Smiths”, “Presence” and “Enough” all from his upbringing and from the heart.

Clancy has been notified of his acceptance to Bond University, where he will study movie production, and who knows where that will take him next? He could become one of the generations next great film makers!”

Portrait Of A Tea CosyThis story is about Miles and tea cosies, but it is also about the opening on 24th January, of the ‘Image of a Tea Cosy’ at the Dogwood Crossing Gallery, Miles. The exhibition combines the work of both Loani Prior, who is well known for her very imaginative, ‘way out’, knitted tea cosies and Mark Crocker, a portrait and architectural photographer. The exhibition features large photographic images of many ordinary people holding tea cosies that have been in their family for years, have special meaning, or tell a story. These stories were gathered from all over Queensland and include five exhibits from Miles residents, making this a ‘local interest’ exhibition. There are many of Loani’s extravagantly knitted cosies on display and her books ‘Really Wild Tea Cosies’ and ‘How Tea Cosies Changed The World’ are also available.

Miles, of course is not fazed by tea cosies. As the home of the ‘World Tea Cosy Championships’ for some years, they are a common sight and once again the Dogwood Centre is ‘swimming’ in them!

The exhibition was opened by Ann Gibbons, the lady who put so much effort into organizing the world championship for so many years. Sadly she has finally retired from the position, so if there is anyone out there who feels like stepping into Ann’s shoes and continuing the competition - now is the time to step up!

Other than going to her newsagency, I had never really met Ann when the championships started and as a practicing, local artisan, I had never considered making anything as ‘domestic’ as a cosy, in fact I was rather

embarrassed to admit that I even though of entering it. After winning two world Championships, (one with ‘Mossy Bank’ and the second with ‘Rose Cottage’ which is presently still on tour) much to my embarrassment, a few locals started referring to me as the ‘tea cosy lady’ and I fear it’s going to take a while to live that one down!

I could not have dreamed of the personal spin-offs resulting from my winning ‘Mossy Bank’. Commissions, workshop, magazine articles and the like have lasted for some years and the style of work has yet to take me in other directions; workshops in Tasmania this year, the ‘World Of Wearable Art Awards’ (WOW) and the Annual Cotton Awards (a long term project that I am about to start), all resulting from the humble tea cosy, the World Tea Cosy Championships and all the hard work and planning that Ann and the Miles Art’s Council put in!

I never drink tea or coffee and I don’t even own a teapot however I do have a few tea cosies, but nowhere near as many as Loani Prior must have, for Loani is really immersed in tea cosies and must have made hundreds. She is known as the ‘Grand Purl Baa, Queen of the Tea cosies’. She says, ‘It seems a friendship is sealed and memories are made solid with the giving of a tea cosy. I have seen hearts swell with love and pride in the telling of a tea cosy story, which is of course not a tea cosy story at all, but about people and memories - old and new…….’ Loanni Prior.

That, in a nutshell, is what this travelling exhibition is all about.

Breast & Prostate Cancer Association Of Qld Inc Receives A Donation Of $20,000 From Murphy Pipe & Civil The Breast & Prostate Cancer Association of Queensland (BPCAQ) will be presented with a donation of $20,000 at the Chinchilla Medical Practice, 58 Middle Street, Chinchilla at 10am on Thursday, 23rd January.

Glenn from Murphy Pipe and Civil will present the cheque to our local Committee members, Joanna Embry of Chinchilla and Ann Gibbons of Miles, along with Dr Saba Alessawy from the Chinchilla Medical Practice. BPCAQ will utilize this amazing donation to provide patient financial assistance grants for those undergoing Breast or Prostate Cancer treatment in the region.

The Breast and Prostate Cancer Association is a volunteer managed charity that provides funding for support and services to sufferers living in rural and regional Queensland. From patient assistance grants to funding breast and prostate care nurses, to research and patient information booklets, our volunteers are dedicated in raising funds for initiatives that will help patients directly.

We are extremely grateful to Murphy Pipe and Civil who have donated this money to assist us

in providing funds for patient care and services directly for Chinchilla/Miles and surrounding districts. We have general financial assistance and accommodation assistance grants available. Please contact our office at [email protected] or the Chinchilla Medical Centre or your local breast care nurses, Maree Wylie in Dalby, Ros Melmeth in Kingaroy, Marion Strong, Bronwyn King or any of the breast or prostate care nurses in Toowoomba, if you would like to access this assistance.

Since 1993, our volunteer board members have a proud history of providing a “grass roots” level of support. We have established breast care nurses in Rockhampton, Barcaldine, Mitchell, and currently fund five breast care nurses in the Emerald, Fraser Coast, Charleville, St George and Rockhampton districts. BPCAQ also provides scholarships for nurses interested in furthering their education in the area of breast or prostate cancer and are supporting two research projects, including Pammie Ellem of Bundaberg who is undertaking a PhD at USQ looking at improving and standardizing breast care nursing practices.

We have ten subcommittees in rural towns throughout Queensland who raise funds to provide emergency financial assistance for breast or prostate cancer sufferers in their district. It is only through donations and the events we organise that we can provide these essential services. More information can be found on our website: www.bcaq.com.

Miles Police ReportAs of the 10th February, 2014, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has made changes to the National Driver Work Diary or truckie’s “log book”, as they are commonly referred to. We have had a bombardment of questions relating to this, so here is a clarification on the changes that have come directly from the NHVR.

The work diary is for drivers of fatigue regulated heavy vehicles who are not allowed to drive or work more than the maximum hours in a certain period set out by law. A work diary is used as evidence that a driver’s work and rest hours are compliant with the law and that their fatigue is being managed.

Drivers are still able to use their current work diary for up to six months after 10th February, however, should you finish your current diary prior to that date, you will need to obtain the new version of the diaries. These diaries are sold at the same location you bought your previous

diaries, which for Miles, is the front counter of the Police Station.

The new work diary has changed somewhat from the old ones that were previously issued. The new diary explains the national fatigue laws, has examples to show you how to count time and requires less information to fill out. Other things, such as reducing the amount of times the odometer and truck regos are recorded, along with recording your basic fatigue management or advanced fatigue management, has been reduced.

There are other smaller changes designed to make the recording of details, such as licence detail and two up driving, more simplified.

All drivers of fatigue regulated heavy vehicles, who drive more than 100km from their home base, must obtain and complete a work diary to record their work and rest times.

Should driver’s work diary be lost, stolen or destroyed for whatever reason, drivers must notify the NHVR or the driver’s local road transport authority within two business days and until the driver purchases a new diary, the driver will be required to complete their own record and carry it with them like their normal diary. However, this is only valid for 7 business days; by the end of these 7 days, a new diary must have been obtained.

These new diaries are more self explanatory and simplified to fill out, creating less confusion and worry amongst drivers.

For further information, visit www.nhvr.gov.au/workdiary or call 1300696487.

Gardening Tips For MarchAfter the heat and humidity that we have been having, your roses may be starting to look a bit out of shape. It is a good idea to prune any stray branches and fertilise them with sudden impact for roses to keep them going.

Petunias, alyssum and lobelia can be planted now to get a good autumn show. It is also a good time to start preparing garden beds for winter planting, by mixing the soil with a slow release fertiliser and gypsum. Winter flowering plants include pansies, sweet peas, foxgloves and larkspur, just to name a few.

If you have a vegetable garden, then towards the end of March is the ideal time to prepare a section of the garden so it is ready for your winter vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, cabbage etc.

Don’t forget to visit Dalby Landscapes Facebook page or drop in and see our friendly staff at 15 Hospital Road, if you would like any further gardening advice.

Give Back To Your Community By Volunteering At Dogwood Crossing

You can indulge your interest in art, meet new people, and bring fresh ideas by joining the enthusiastic group at Dogwood Crossing who volunteer as committee members, Gallery Groupie or Public Program volunteers.

Spokesperson for Cultural Development and Health Services Councillor Carolyn Tillman said volunteering at a regional art gallery like Dogwood Crossing is very rewarding and essential to delivering community services.

“Volunteers play an essential role in supporting the development and installation of exhibitions and public programs for the John Mullins Memorial Art Gallery and the Curved Wall Exhibition Space at Dogwood Crossing,” she said.

“If you’re interested in helping to plan the annual exhibition calendar, then becoming a Dogwood Crossing Art Gallery committee member is for you. Or if you want to help install and demount

exhibitions, then you can become a Gallery Groupie.

“If assisting in the delivery of popular public programs interests you, like the Toddler Tuesday program for children, or the Forget-Me-Not program for people in the community living with dementia, then becoming a Public Programs Volunteer is for you.”

Anyone interested in joining the Dogwood Crossing Art Gallery committee can find out more at the AGM at 9am on Tuesday 25 February.

If you’re interested in becoming a Gallery Groupie or Public Programs volunteer you can find out more by contacting Dogwood Crossing on 4679 4430 or visiting their website www.dogwoodcrossing.com

For more information on volunteering throughout the region, including Visitor Information Centres, museums or other art

galleries like Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery and Gallery 107 @ Dalby, please call Council’s Cultural Development Coordinator on 4679 4031.

Wandoan Landfill Users To Have A Better Trip To The TipUsers of the Wandoan Landfill can now say goodbye to spending their time at the tip swatting flies and making unsightly mounds of rubbish bigger, with changes to the landfill’s operation taking effect from next Monday 10 February as part of Council’s strategy Towards a Waste Wise Western Downs.

Spokesperson for Environmental Health Councillor Greg Olm said the changes being introduced at Wandoan Landfill will help enhance the patron experience by making the trip to the Wandoan Landfill better.

“From next Monday residents and businesses who use the Wandoan Landfill will notice a friendly face ready and eager to help guide them

through the enhanced facility, where there’ll be roads and dedicated drop off areas to help separate waste from recycling,” he said.

“The new drop off areas will help ensure greenwaste and timber, scrap steel, and mixed recyclables are recycled, rather than just added to landfill. While improved maintenance from regular pushing, compaction and covering of waste will ensure the trip to the tip is better.

“For those unable to visit the landfill, there are options to help improve recycling and minimise waste. Households are able to request new or additional garbage and recycling collection services, and community groups, businesses or rural property owners can arrange an industrial

bin or skip with a commercial provider.

“Council is confident that the improvement to operations at Wandoan landfill will be of great benefit to both the community and the environment and will continue to help us Towards a Waste Wise Western Downs.”

From 10 February 2014 the Wandoan Landfill will be open from 7am to 5.30pm, 7 days a week.

For details on the applicable commercial and industrial waste fees and charges, please visit Council’s website www.wdrc.qld.gov.au/waste-facilities#Wandoan or call 1300 COUNCIL.

Clean Roadsides For Our Western DownsA campaign is underway to bring the Roadside Rubbish issue to the forefront of discussion. This issue is one that is being discussed increasingly by many of our Western Downs Communities.

• The amount of roadside rubbish is at a point of critical mass in the Western Downs;

• Need to come up with solutions to assist and improve roadside cleanliness;

• Impacts on our environment are devastating;

• Contaminated waterways are of major concern;

• Our filthy roadsides make it increasingly difficult to promote our towns and communities as proud, savvy and progressive places to live, work and visit;

• Support, involvement and assistance are

required to table this as a serious issue for our region;

• Lobbying, strategies and actions are required to effect change and improved outcomes for our communities and environment in relation to roadside rubbish.

If you would like to have your say, provide some suggested actions and solutions then visit the e-petition at: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/clean-raodsides-for-the-western-downs

Your support and involvement by signing the petition is welcome and will help to influence some action, as well as long terms strategies and solutions in being developed by the key players. It is time to stop ‘brushing this one under the carpet’! Get on board today and have your say about handing on a clean region for our future generations!

They say they breed them tough in the bush but really I think we breed them brilliant…well that’s the case when you mention the name Scott Bridle. Scott is a born and bred Glenmorgan boy raised at Erambie. His appreciation for nature and the bush was implanted into him from day one by his mother and father as they taught him about the magnificence and splendour that the bush had to offer. With his mother as an artist there is no doubt that Scott “grew up immersed in art” and before long his mother gave him another artistic medium to turn his hand at, photography. Leaving home at age 20 set for the stations up north with camera in hand, Scott embarked on a journey of majestic beauty and admiration. He spent 15 years as a stockman snapping away before graduating to the skies as a pilot. This different angle opened the doorway for Scott in to a new world of photographic opportunities. He spent 10 years in the air before returning to the district with ample images that left the masses in awe. Scott delighted in seeing the pleasant expressions as people looked on through his photos which lead him to compiling his recent book “Outback”. From here Scott decided to try his hand at a bit of healthy competition by entering the BHP Billiton Cannington Waltzing Matilda Photographic Competition. He began his success in this area taking out first place in the Colour Print section in 2010 and more recently again in 2013 with his image (pictured) Jordan’s Woolshed Brenda.

Scott continues his passion for photography right here in the Western Downs and is now based in Meandarra with his newly established helicopter business specialising in contract mustering, feral animal control and aerial photography. With his love for the bush, Scott has also developed a special talent for the odd portrait or two. He is currently building his photographic portfolio in order to release another book and plans to do a

few more trips out west before its completion. Scott’s current book “Outback” can be found at all leading book stores or on his website www.scottbridle.com; for bookings and enquiries please contact Scott on 0429 674 114 or Fairway Studios, Goondiwindi. For those that are interested in photography or would even like to just give it a go, Scott will be judging the Photography section at the Tara Show on the 8th March. And just to be sure he never misses an opportunity, Scott “always has his camera with him” no matter where his travels may lead.

Empire TheatreThe PHANTOM of the OPERAFar beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, the Phantom lives his shadowy existence. Shamed by his grotesque physical appearance he lurks in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over its occupants, but the love he holds for his beautiful protégée, innocent soprano Christine is too strong even for her heart to resist.

The 2014 Empire Theatres major production, The Phantom of the Opera, presented by Heritage Bank, is a timeless story of seduction, despair and obsession as The Phantom’s fixation on Christine unleashes a tale of drama, destruction and death.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international award winning musical, as this unique theatrical experience, featuring the haunting score including Think of Me, Angel of Music, Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and The Phantom of the Opera is brought to life on the Empire Theatre stage from April 3-13.

Walking In Your ShoesThere’s an old saying “You can’t really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”. Last month members of the BMO Team hit the road to get a better sense of just what it’s like to be in the shoes of farmers and business owners across our region.

The stories aren’t new to us. Most of the BMO Partners have grown up on farms and even still work on them, we’ve helped in our families’ businesses, we’ve invested and we’ve borrowed. We’ve been young and carefree, we’ve studied, and we’ve travelled. We’ve had health crises. We’ve lost loved ones. We’ve had families. We get what it’s like to try and put a child through school while praying for the rains to come. And we’ve had good times too, like winning a big contract or having a good day on the golf course. BMO has worked with clients across a range of industries for more than 24 years.

Importantly though, even though we’ve had similar experiences to our clients, we know

that we will never assume at the outset what it’s like to be them. To do that, we have to walk alongside them and listen. It’s part of our team values at BMO – our value of “understanding” is about respect and good manners, being open and honest, and committed to listening.

It goes right back to ancient Greece. Plato once said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. That is why we’ve launched a new campaign called “We’re with you every step of the way”. It means more than just walking beside our clients and advising them, it’s about being “with them”; providing a service that’s not dictatorial – but more like a partnership.

During February, we were out on the road travelling to Taroom, Miles, Condamine, Dirranbandi, Moonie and back to Dalby visiting clients and presenting our “The Farmer Wants a Life” seminars. One thing that really struck us was that no matter how bad the conditions were out in these communities, everywhere

we went we were taken aback by the positive spirit of our farming communities. In amongst the desperate need for rain, there were signs of progress and excitement. More than 150 guests came along to the sessions to talk with us about succession planning, business structures, tax tips, government incentives, aged care, employing people, communication and about being aware of the signs of and effects of stress.

We know all too well the many challenges all of our local small businesses are facing – not just farmers but service industry, manufacturing, transport and retail. We know that everyone’s wearing a different pair of shoes… Sometimes the path is smooth and sometimes it’s bumpy. Some are skipping through while others are dragging their feet. But no matter where you are at in life, or in business, we’re with you every step of the way.

The Need for SleepIn last month’s magazine edition you may have learnt a thing or two about sugar and hopefully you have started on your journey of change. This month we are going to focus on another topic that can vastly affect your health, and that is sleep. Firstly, lets test how well you are sleeping with a simple questionnaire. For more than two weeks have you…

• Had trouble getting to sleep?

• Been sleeping for fewer hours than usual?

• Had poor quality of sleep?

• Been tossing and turning at night?

• Been waking up regularly during the night?

• Been feeling sleepy most of the day?

If you answered yes to any of these then you are not alone. About 15% of Australians are estimated to suffer regular sleep difficulties and another 20% claim to suffer occasional problems sleeping. However, having a good night of sleep is important for maintaining good health. The body uses sleep to recharge from the day’s activities. In addition to this we need quality sleep which is not necessarily a long sleep. Lack of sleep or quality sleep can lead to irritability, lack

of energy, poor concentration, fatigue, dizziness, slow reaction time, aches and pains, reduced immune function, decreased general well-being, hallucinations and increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Some common sleep problems and disorders include insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and sleep apnoea.

Some tips to improve your sleep

In the Morning

• Get out of bed as soon as you wake. Don’t go back to sleep.

• Get up at the same time each morning.

• Go outside into the fresh air

• Do some form of physical activity, like going for a walk.

During the Day

• Do not take naps.

• If you are worrying about problems then make time to address them so that your mind is free of worry and thoughts at night.

• Monitor your sleep hours and awake hours by using a diary.

• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea or energy drinks and at worst avoid consuming any caffeine after 4pm.

• Exercise .

At Night

• Try to go to bed at the same time each night.

• Use low light when getting ready for bed; this signals the brain to wind down.

• Try to keep all electrical items out of your bedroom. Some studies have shown that electricity can interfere with brain activity during sleep.

• If you have trouble getting to sleep then do a low energy and low stimulation activity before going to be such as reading or sewing. Avoid mobile phones or television as they cause too much stimulation.

• Also listening to relaxing music can help clear your mind.

• Ensure your bedroom is quiet, comfortable and dark.

Sleep Tight!

Ask OptomTomYour questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Should I Be Using Generic Over The Counter Reading Glasses? New research has revealed that over the counter reading glasses with identical magnification in each eye may put old people at risk of a fall, impact on quality of life and even life expectancy.

The main reason for this is that as we get older there is a greater prevalence of anisometropia (difference between the two eyes). This condition is 10 times more likely in people over 75 years old compared to children.

Generic over the counter reading glasses don’t account for these differences. Appropriate correction of both eyes is especially important as we get older and less stable on our feet.

Visit the Bunya MountainsBunya Nuts are falling and there are an awful lot of them this year. The trees are loaded and bunya cones are littering the ground. Driving is interesting at present – dodging bunya cones. Some cones are huge, weighing up to 10kg, with the majority around 6 – 8kg. Bunya cones mostly fall at night but the crashing sound of branches being broken and the thud as the cone hits the ground echoes around the mountain even during the day.

All chalets are fully self-contained and range from one bedroom up to five bedrooms. Our smallest chalet accommodates two people in cosy privacy; the largest chalet accommodates the whole family and extended family (up to 22 people). Prices are very affordable. Your chalet can be nestled within the rainforest, perched on striking escarpments overlooking the Darling Downs or South Burnett or you can enjoy stunning rainforest views close to the walking tracks. Lock your car and forget it while you are enjoying the Bunya Mountains – all accommodation is within walking distance (maximum 2km radius) to all amenities including walking tracks, coffee shops and restaurants. Try a bunya burger or bunya nut scones with a cappuccino at “Poppies on the Hill”. Stay at least two nights to fully explore the magic of Bunya Mountains.

Bunya Mountains is a cool place with crisp clean invigorating mountain air. We are usually five to seven degrees cooler that the surrounding plains all year round. Please bring appropriate warm clothing, even in summer!

Australian Interschool Equestrian ChampionshipsIn 1984, the first ever Interschool Competition was held in Brisbane with riders coming from various parts of the state. Now some thirty years on, we continue to have a large network with Regional, State and National events. Over the past six years, the National Championships have been held annually in Melbourne, Sydney and Toowoomba. In 2013, Western Australia held the very first Interschool National Championships away from the eastern sea board in Brigadoon, Perth. In October this year, the Western Downs Region had the following riders compete: Sean Geraghty, Dominic Holtkamp, Hannah Portbury, Elise Crawford, and Emily, Tom, and Sarah Coggan. These riders had to qualify at regional and then state championships before receiving spots in the Queensland team.

300 athletes represented every state in Australia at the Championships which ran from the 2nd to the 5th October. The event was held at the State Equestrian Centre, located in the Swan Valley, some thirty minutes from Perth. The Swan Valley is also home to over one-hundred wineries including Houghtons and Taylors. Rumour has it, many interschool parents did enjoy a session of wine tasting or two. At this time, Western Australia was receiving one of its wettest years on record. The hospitality of this state was second to none and they were certainly out to make an impression.

Of the children who gained selection, some decided to use pool horses, which always adds an element of difficulty and surprise, not knowing your mount. Those who chose to use pool horses have made long lasting friendships with their WA Hosts. Others made the epic journey of 9000km’s to Western Australia and back. The twenty-two horses that made the journey faced a few hurdles with having to cross three state borders and having to dump feed at four different check stations.

However, this journey was full of adventure and exciting tales that included: Sharing a camp site at Eucla with 300 Rebel bikies who were being escorted out of WA by forty undercover police, playing the Nullarbor Links (the world’s longest golf course), seeing the Western Australian native wildflowers, checking out the super pit in Kalgoorlie and whale watching at the Head of the Bight. One family even managed to have a German countess make the trip back with them. Phillip Coggan described the trip “as an adventure of a lifetime and a must do trip for anyone who has not previously crossed the Nullarbor.”

On a whole, the Western Downs Council collected six national titles across the disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage and Combined Training. An amazing effort from these seven riders given the distance that many of them live from regular coaching! After speaking with Theresa Geraghty who coaches brother, Sean, she said, “The Interschool National Championships have taken us all over Australia, to places that I never thought I would go. I just wish that I had known about it when I was at school”.

The Interschool Competition season runs from July to the following July. This year, the Regional Championships will be held in Dalby on the 10-12th May, and all new competitors would be greatly received.

C&K Murilla Kindy UpdateWelcome back to another wonderful year at C&K Murilla Kindy! Our new children have settled in to the routines of our kindy and great friendships are already developing. It’s lovely to see those children who are familiar with our kindy welcoming the new children and inviting them to play. Social development is a strong point at C&K Murilla Kindy and children learn social norms and appropriate social behaviour through play under the guidance of our fantastic teachers.

We are delighted to announce that our teacher from last year, Mrs Nicole Campbell, has had a beautiful baby boy and both mum and baby are settling into family life really well. We would also like to introduce our new teacher for 2014, Mrs Sue Reilly, fondly referred to as ‘Miss Sue’ by our children. Miss Sue comes with years of experience in working with young children and has a Bachelor degree in education. Her teaching background consists of many years teaching in lower primary as well as relief work in Prep and Year 1 classrooms. She is currently engaged in a bridging course to continue her professional development in working with young children.

Sue resides in Condamine and runs a mixed grain and cattle property with her husband. She has two grown children and three grandchildren whom she loves to play and interact with. Sue has a firm belief in early learning experiences in children and the “huge benefits these have on children”. Her objective at C&K Murilla Kindy is to provide meaningful and holistic learning through play-based experiences and “maintain enthusiastic and active learners”. Her goal in working with the children is to help them develop “responsible and respectful attitudes toward themselves and others while having fun every day they attend kindy”.

Under Sue’s guidance as a teacher, our children at C&K Murilla Kindy have already started experimenting with writing their own name, recognising the first letter of their name and drawing their own connections between letters in their name and those in their friend’s. Numbers shapes and other concepts are also incorporated into play activities on a regular basis. For the younger children at our centre, Miss Sue has been introducing art and craft activities that

focus on developing their fine motor skills, such as painting and cutting-out, to assist them in building the necessary coordination for holding a pencil and forming letters.

C&K Murilla Kindy welcomes enrolments for children aged 3-5 years and some vacancies are still available at present. If your child is within this age range and seems ready for kindy experiences, please come and see us at our centre at 86 Marian Street in Miles, or contact us on (07) 4627 1340 or [email protected]. C&K Murilla Kindy operates every Tuesday and Thursday and every alternate Friday.

Year 8 Camp 2014This year we broke with tradition and took our Year Eight cohort to Stanley River Environmental Education Centre on the edge of Somerset Dam near Kilcoy. The focus of the camp was to develop teamwork skills and develop positive relationships between the students. Over the three days students undertook numerous problem solving skills, orienteering adventures, canoeing skills and built their own catapults. As a culminating activity to test their newly developed skills, on the last morning of camp, students were challenged with rescuing the “Stanley River Princess”. Students effectively worked together to ferry their team across a cove to collect equipment and resources required to construct rafts on which they would transport their team’s “princess”. Our students showed exceptional teamwork skills; communicating effectively,

cooperating, respecting and anticipating the needs of their team to ensure they succeeded in the challenge. All in all the camp was a huge success, with many great experiences, skills and laughs shared by all.
