Potluck _a banquet to sharePotluck is a new social eating and community gathering concept which revives and ancient tradition. it’s a convivial sharing of an experience which is created and lived by a group. FLoWER PotLUCK on 25.09.2014small crowns to become a flower princess and centrepieces to embellish our common long table. We were at serena Barbieri’s place, in her catering lab, and our tutor was the eclectic sachiko ito, gifted as she is with a most refined aesthetic taste. Cecilia Carmana and Anna Fazio told us about the secrets hidden in the art of welcoming people, and we enjoyed an informal though most elegant dinner together.

il servizio bello, magari con qualche piatto della nonna che dà alla tavola un tocco di famiglia. E quest’anno ottone, e tocchi di verde come si conviene.

La tavola per il nostro Natale è un classico che si riscopre, una tradizione che si rinnova. Un dettaglio che racconta la nostra storia, accostato con grazia alla bellezza appena scovata.

La salopette è doppiata all’interno solo nella parte della pettorina e delle bretelle da una maglina di caldo cotone a righe, quindi va tagliata anche con il carta modello la parte davanti e quella dietro della doppiatura. i pezzi che si vedono nella foto sono appunto pettorina e bretelle. Una volta che si hanno tutti i pezzi di stoffa tagliati vanno uniti cucendoli con la macchina da cucire e anche la doppiatura a righe va unita alla felpa nella pettorina e nelle bretelle. Poi si deve inserire la cerniera lampo per la chiusura in basso e gli elastici che stringano alla caviglia per chiudere la gamba.A questo punto sempre con la macchina da cucire si fanno le asole sulla pettorina e a mano con ago e filo si attaccano i bottoni sulle bretelle per chiudere la salopette in alto. La salopette è finita!

WhAt YoU nEED:Plain-coloured cotton jerseystriped cotton jerseystretch bandsZipneedlesewing threadButtons

hoW YoU Do it:take the paper pattern of the dungarees.the paper pattern is made up of a single front portion which is for legs and trunk, of a back portion for legs and back, of the front stomacher and of the back portion for the suspenders. Each single portion of the paper pattern

must be laid on the plain-coloured cotton jersey and pinned to it to cut the fabric accurately. in the stomacher portion only and in the suspenders the dungarees are lined with a cotton striped jersey, so both the front and the back portion of the lining must be cut to the pattern. Pictured here are exactly the stomacher and suspenders portions. once all fabric pieces have been cut, you can sew them with your sewing machine. the striped lining too must be seamed to the fleece in the stomacher and the suspenders. it’s now time for the zip to be sewed and later for the stretch bands to be fastened on the heels to close the legs. the sewing machine will also help you with the buttonholes on the stomacher, while the buttons are sewed by hand with needle and sewing thread on the suspenders to do up the dungarees on top.the dungarees are ready!

UNCoNVENtioNAL DiNNER_ilamalu (styling tavola)Una cena della Vigilia di Natale tra amici, con il calore delle candele a scaldare una tavola molto semplice e pulita. Come elemento principale abbiamo scelto un centrotavola composto da una vecchia asse di legno grezzo sulla quale sono stati fissati tanti porta candela in metallo e appoggiati minivasettini in vetro di varie dimensioni riempiti di verde, bacche e qualche cardo rosa (perché il natale non è solo rosso e verde o bianco e argento!). i tovaglioli appoggiati su ogni piatto sono legati con una decorazione in latta a forma di uccellino, con un cardo a segnare ogni posto tavola.

My FAMiLy LUNCH_ trendinozze (styling tavola)Materiali grezzi e naturali sono stati scelti per decorare la tavola di un pranzo di Natale in famiglia, informale ma caloroso e accogliente.Al centro del grande tavolo in legno della cucina è stato posta una brocca da vino ricoperta di lana bianca e spessa, dentro alla quale hanno trovato posto tanti rametti. A questo simbolico albero di Natale, sono state appese tante piccole palline bianche e decorazioni fatte a mano con materiali di recupero: fette di arancia essiccata e biscotti a forma di stella. Per arricchire la tavola sono state sparpagliate delle noci e nocciole e decine di stelle di carta origami piegate a mano. La luce di tante piccole candele in barattolini coperti di lana completanol’allestimento. ogni commensale ha trovato al suo posto una scatolina di biscotti decorata con lana e cannella e il proprio nome indicato su un biscotto segnaposto.

UnConVEntionAL DinnER _ ilamalu (table-setting styling)A Christmas Eve dinner with friends in the light of candles to warm up a most plain and unfussy table. the main feature is represented by a table centrepiece made up of an old raw wood board on which a series of metal candle holders has been fixed and a number of small glass jars has been put in a variety of sizes filled with green, berries and some pink thistles (as Christmas is not only red and green or white and silver!) the napkins lying on each plate are tied up with a bird-shaped tin decoration, and thistles are put there as place markers.

MY FAMiLY LUnCh _ trendinozze (table-setting styling) Raw and natural materials have been selected to embellish the table of a household Christmas lunch, informal though welcoming and comfortable. in the middle of the big wooden kitchen table a big wine jug has been placed covered in white and thick wool and filled with a bunch of branches.

this symbolic Christmas tree has been decorated with a lot of white small balls and handmade embellishments made of recycled materials: dried orange skins and star-shaped biscuits. some nuts and hazelnuts have been spread all over the tablecloth together with dozens of origami hand-folded paper stars for added beauty. the setting is completed with the lights of a number of small candles put into small tins covered with a woollen cloth. Each guest has found a small biscuit box at their place, decorated with wool and cinnamon, and their name features on a place marker biscuit.

togliere la matassina dalla forchetta e tagliare all’estremità opposta del nodo. Non è semplicissimo?

cHe coSa ti Serve (doSe Per 500 GraMMi di frolla):250 g di farina, 150 g di burro, 100 g di zucchero2 uova, sale, scorza di limonecannella, zenzero, anice stellato, chiodi di garofano½ bustina di lievito

coMe Si fatritare fino a polverizzare le spezie. La quantità dipende da quanto volete che i biscotti siano aromatizzati: se avete una bilancia di precisione, circa 4 o 5 grammi totali basteranno. Sono circa 2 cucchiaini da tè.Mescolare con la punta delle dita in una ciotola ampia farina e burro. Unire lo zucchero, le uova, una grattata di scorza di limone, il lievito le spezie e una presa di sale e continuare ad impastare, senza insistere troppo ma cercando di far amalgamare ben bene gli ingredienti. Se avete l’impastatrice, meglio, se no usate la mani e tanta energia. Porre la palla di impasto coperta da pellicola in frigorifero per 20 minuti.infarinare leggermente un piano di lavoro e stendere la pasta con il mattarello, formando una sfoglia di circa 1 cm di spessore.Sbizzarrirsi coi coppapasta e creare le forme preferite!Se desiderate il foro da cui far passare i nastrini per appendere i biscotti, fatelo adesso, e cercate di farlo un po’ più largo di quanto serva, perché in cottura il foro si restringerà. Porre i biscotti su una teglia foderata con carta da forno e rimettere in frigorifero per altri 20 minuti. Cuocere in forno statico per 10-12 minuti a 180° C.

SAPEtE CoME Si PREPARA?Mescolare a un tè nero (va bene anche quello delle bustine, una per ogni invitato) con le spezie usate per i biscotti, aromatizzato con scorze di arancia e limone. Portare a bollore l’acqua e, appena prima che bolla, versarne un po’ in una teiera per scaldarla e poi buttatela.Porre il tè, le spezie e le scorze in un colino posto sopra la teiera e versare l’acqua nella teiera. Lasciare in infusione per 4 minuti al massimo, eliminare il colino e servire. il tè non dovrebbe essere zuccherato ma possiamo fare un’eccezione… meglio un cucchiaio di miele o poco zucchero di canna.

Unless you eat them all as soon as they leave the oven!

LA RiCEttA DEi BiSCotti SPEziAti PER ARRiCCHiRE CoN GUSto iL VoStRo ALBERo Più BELLo C’è un classico più classico dei biscotti di Natale? Quelli a forma di stella e alberello, omino e donnina, da appendere all’albero o da sgranocchiare davanti a un bel tè nei giorni prima del fatidico 25 dicembre? Ecco qui la ricetta a prova di bomba per prepararne una tonnellata: alcuni col foro per appenderli con fiocchetti rossi in giro per la casa, altri senza, perché da mangiare sono buonissimi e si conservano nelle scatole di latta per intere settimane. Sempre che non li finiate tutti appena escono dal forno!


WhAt YoU nEED (QUAntitiEs FoR 500 GR shoRtBREAD):250 g flour, 150 g butter, 100 g sugar2 eggs, pinch of salt, lemon rindcinnamon, ginger, star anise, cloveshalf bag baking powder

hoW YoU MAKE itGrind the spices until powdered. the quantity depends on how spiced you like your biscuits. if you have a very accurate scale, about 4 or 5 grams will be enough. it corresponds to about 2 tea spoons. in a big bowl mix flour and butter using your finger tips. Add sugar, eggs, some ground lemon rind, the baking powder and the spices and a pinch of salt and go on gently mixing, trying to incorporate all ingredients well. if you have got a food-mixer, so much the better. if you don’t, use your hands energetically. Wrap the dough ball in a plastic film and put it into the fridge to rest for 20 minutes. Dust a worktop with flour and use the rolling pin to stretch the dough thus making a layer of about 1 cm thickness. Unleash your fantasy then with all the little moulds you like. if you want to make the hole for the ribbons, so that you can later hang your biscuits, just do it now and get a larger hole than needed, as the hole will shrink a bit in the baking process. Put the biscuits on a baking pan lined with baking paper and put it again into the fridge for another 20 minutes. Bake in oven (no fan) for 10-12 minutes at 180° C.

to BE sERVED With A ChRistMAs hoMEMADE tEA!A classic black tea can become special if teamed up with the spice mix used for the biscuits. Do you know how to make it?Mix some black tea (tea bags also ok! one bag per guest) with the spices used for the biscuits and flavour it with orange and lemon rinds. Boil water and pour some hot water just before boiling into a tea pot and then empty it out. Put the tea, spices and rinds mix in a colander placed on the tea pot and pour water into the tea pot. Brew it for 4 minutes at the latest, remove the colander and serve. no sugar should be added to the tea, but if you really like it, an exception can be made for you ... a better solution would be a spoonful honey or a pinch of brown sugar.
