How do we minimise the
impacts of fishing on seabed habitat?
Set up 127 marine reserves and eat free range leBuce
of course
The answer is obvious isn’t it?
The policy or ques7on
An opinion about the policy or ques7on
How do we minimise the
impacts of fishing on seabed habitat?
Well, firstly it depends on your objec7ves…you might reduce fishing effort which would benefit stock
status and the seabed, but you need to consider the socio‐economic effects….or you might use a
technical measure such as a gear modifica7on…..or you might use
MPAs, but you need to think about the effects of displaced ac7vity…or you might use all of the above
…Well actually a bit more complex
The policy or ques7on
Different paths to achieve the policy goal or answer
the ques7on
What should a scien7st do? Answer specific ques7ons Provide independent evidence Evaluate different scenarios Suggest alterna7ve approaches
What shouldn’t a scien7st do? Manipulate the data Be selec7ve in their use of evidence Ignore different scenarios Have an agenda
All fish gone by 2048
Examples of poor prac7ce – extrapola7ng beyond the data
Not all science is good……….it varies in quality like everything else
