Migration:

A permanent or semi-permanent change of residence of an individual or group of people.

Net migration:

The difference between the numbers of in-migrants and out-migrants in an area. When in migrants exceed out migrants there is a net migrational gain. The opposite is termed net migrational loss.

These are migrations through personal choice. Most voluntary migrations are internal as a result of:

a) Employment

b) Better climates

c) Relatives

d) Territorial expansion

Rural – Urban Migration:

Movement of rural-urban areas is termed urbanisation and is particularly common in LEDC’s. In MEDC’s the more common process is that from Urban-Rural and is termed counter-urbanisation.

Regional migration in Brazil:

Massive migration out of NE region of Brazil due to drought , famine and poverty to Sao Paulo and Rio.

International Migration:

Migrants move between borders and in most cases is in fact voluntary. In recent years America has experiences large numbers of migrants from MEDC’s and LEDC’s alike.
