• Support Migration to TCP/IP Networks • Maximize Value of Existing Printing Resources

– Attempt to use the existing network & printers• Reduce Document Delivery Costs

– By distributing output, then printing • Moving to Virtual Private Networks

– Very interested in cost reduction

Reasons for Migrating

• IP offers obvious advantages over SNA– Lower costs – Single network protocol for all printing– Easier steps to adding printers– Open TCP/IP protocol supported by

numerous output devices– Higher performance and dependability

Page 8: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

IP Printing Options

• Various points for SNA to IP ‘bridge’• Many ways to ‘bridge’ gap between SNA and IP

– SNA Emulation/Gateway• Server level• Desktop SNA emulations

Page 9: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

LRS IP Philosophy

• LRS philosophy of IP printing: – Begin at the source

• Send SYSOUT data directly from MVS across TCP/IP to printer

• No intermediate emulation• Data never touches ‘SNA world’

Page 10: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

LRS IP Printing Options

• LRS offers various options for

printing host output via TCP/IP– VPS/TCPIP

• LPR/LPD• Sockets• BIP™

– AnyQueue™– VPS/Email

Page 11: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

VPS/TCPIP

• VPS/TCPIP runs in the same MVS address space as VPS

• Support VTAM and TCP/IP printing concurrently– Easy migration path

• VTAM and TCP/IP printers defined in common control library

• Printers can be easily added, modified, deleted dynamically

Page 12: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

LPR/LPD Printing

• Advantages– Universal Acceptance

• Almost every TCP/IP host supports LPD

• Disadvantages– Inefficient

• Overhead associated with LPR/LPD

– Separators and checkpointing do not work as well as with SNA

Page 13: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

Sockets Printing

• Advantages– Efficient

• No need to ‘stage’ data before processing• LPR/LPD ‘control file’ and associated

processing not needed

– Separators work as they do in SNA– Commands and checkpointing also work

as expected

• Disadvantages– Servers generally do not support Direct

Sockets connection• Direct sockets connection cannot be made to

UNIX or NT servers

Page 14: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

BIP

• BIP (Bi-directional Internet Printing) enhances VPS/TCPIP Direct Sockets support

• Advantages– Greater control

• Two-way communication with printer• Recoverability• Status messages• Cancel key

• Disadvantages– Same as ‘sockets printer’

• Does not work through servers• Some printers do not support BIP; most do

VPS/TCPIP with BIP

Page 15: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

BIP Features

• Recoverability– ‘Remembers’ last page printed– Restarts at proper page after error or

interrupt

• Status Messages– Error Status codes displayed by VPS– VPS continues printing when

condition cleared

• End user can cancel print using printer’s cancel key

Page 16: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

Formatting IP Output

• Standard VPS functions allow user control of output formatting– Landscape/Portrait– Multiple up (PostScript)– Duplex– Input tray selection

Page 17: Migrating Printing from SNA to TCP/IP & Secured Output Distribution Banking, Financial & Insurance Marketing Representatives Tracy GuardDenice HurtMark

Reasons for Migrating

• Advantages of TCP/IP over SNA– Lower costs – Single network protocol for all printing– Easier steps to adding printers– Open TCP/IP protocol supported by

numerous output devices– Higher performance and dependability

Why Secure Output?

• Reasons to Secure your Output– Host to LAN print distribution

• Stock or Financial Transaction Reports• Remote Check printing• Personal Account Information / PIN or Social Security numbers• Payroll, Pricing & Salary reports• Invoice, PO & Contract printing

– Route LAN output up to the Host – Transfer Print File between JES to JES– Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act Requirements– Added security to current Virtual Private Network

VPS/Secure Solution

The Solution: Secure Output Distribution• Products reside on Mainframe, Unix or NT• Encrypt output before it enters the network • Decryption Hardware support available in

– Hewlett-Packard printers– Lexmark printers (3rd Quarter 2002)

• Documents cannot be viewed or copied• Documents only print at intended secured printer• Uses the NIST selected Rijndael algorithm• Utilizes VPS reliability and scalability
