Yearbook Portfolio 2014 Midterm

This picture was taken during the chorus Madri-gals rehersal. It depicts the behind the scences crew practicing the switches for the differnt lighting techniques during the show. This photo was taken to be part of a mod for the spead about the show. It was important this photo be taken because it covers more than just the main cast of the preformance. This shows my section covered a variety of people.

The picture above is of a main character in the Chorus Madgrical production delivering a monolauge. It was difficult to capture this pho-to because the stage lighting was extremly dark and I had to get very close up to take it. For the main spread this photo was cut out to put em-phasis on the characters. This shows my action shot photograpthy skills.

Between overwhelming schedules packed with AP classes, standard-ized tests for upperclassmen, and afterschool clubs, sports, and other social events, the students at Plant High still have successfully man-aged to do it all. Tyler Powell (11), who balanced two baseball games a week, five days of practice, an SAT tutor, and four rigorous AP classes, explained that “As the year goes on you learn to better man-age your time and find room for everything.” While Matthew Canel-la (11), further described his stress with up to five hours of football practice a day, his 6 AP classes, HCC dual enrollment and scoring well on the SAT to be “insurmountable.” Many students also turned to various tutoring methods for studying not only for the SAT, but also their intense classes. Among the most popular included: studying with friends or a private tutor at Starbucks or Panera Bread during the school week, Armstrong Tutoring at the Library on the weekends, or individual sessions at Mathnasuim. This year, with the dreaded SAT on the morning of the Homecoming dance, many students scrambled straight from the testing room to hair and makeup appointments, do-ing their very best find any chance they could to relax before the long night. Many students, despite a quite hectic day, were able to enjoy the rest of their night knowing the stress of test was all over.

This copy was written for a spread about the SAT, in school classes, and the stress revolving around the two. Also, the SAT on the morning of homecoing was featured as a mod. It was hard to find students that attended both homecoming and the SAT. How-ever, it was not hard to find anyone with busy sched-ules. This shows my interview and copy writing skills.

12 hours on, 12 hours off. That’s the typical work day of Kellie Mes-sano, even on holidays. That means no Thanksgiving off, no Christ-mas break, and no random days off from work. Why? The news never stops. Being a Fox 13 journalist is quite a time consuming and stressful job, the yearbook staffers learned from their key note speak-er during this year’s Great American Teach in. Speaking to a class of high school journalists, Messano emphasized the great responsibil-ity the staff has in recording history and further related it to her job where she also gets to record history every single day. “Mrs. Messano gave us great advice on what it takes to pursue a career in journal-ism. It was really interesting to hear about how she found story ideas and translated them into news.” The class was extremely interested to every word she had to say and it especially caught their attention as Messano received an instant news alert during the presentation. “She was passionate about what she does and it was super inspiring to see an exciting job in journalism” (Katie Martin 11).

The above copy was written for a spread on The Great American Teach In. It was easy to find stu-dents for the quotes because the speaker spoke in my yearbook class. However, I did have to re-search on my own things about FOX 13 and ask the speaker extra questions at the conclusion of the presentation. This shows my interview and copy writing skills.

In this photo I had to zoom onto the stage and use differnt flash techniques to make sure the photo was not dark. I had to postition myself to make sure that the cast was shown in the baxkground as well as the narrator deliver-ing his speech be the main focus. This shows a candid photo. This shows my ability to adjust to photos with different lighting.

This picure was taken before the feast at Madg-ricals. It depicts two boys carrying up the Boar’s Head from a side angle. It was difficult to take this picture from so close up and the bad light-ing caused me to use differnt flash speeds. This shows my abilty to get up close and adjust flash.

Charlie Belcher, a Fox 13 news reporter, is crowned “king” by the cast of the Madrigals on the primetime morning news. Belcher was asked to come feature the chorus cast on his segment “Char-ley’s World” during “Good Day Tampa Bay” before thier opening preformance. “They really know how to treat you like a king here at Plant High School” (Charlie Belcher, Fox 13).

This quote shows the present, past, quote for-mat of captions. This caption required me to gather outside information as well as conduct an interview to gain insight about the pic-ture being captioned. This shows my ability to gather information and write captions.

Bruce Yost sets the scene for a Fox 13 segment by describing the hard work put into the show, as well as promoting its date, time, location, and stellar entertainment. The news caster, Charlie Belcher, encour-aged all Tampa families looking for a weekend activity to buy a tick-et to the preformance. “The cast had to arrive at school around 5:30 in the morning. No one had told them what they were going to have to preform so they had to be prepared for anything. We just made it up as we went along and it turned out to be a fantastic opprotunity” (Bruce Yost Chorus).

This caption was difficult to write because it re-quired me to conduct an interview with indirect questions to gather information. I had to ask differ-ent series of questions that eventaully led to a us-able quote. Also, I further had to watch the actaul news report to understand the situation fully. This shows my ability to take information from an inter-view and make meaning of it in a caption.

This photo was for a headshot that was going to be cut out. I had to determine the best back-ground for a cutout and find a spot with good lighting. I used the different shutter speeds on my camera to set it on a clear and focused shot. This shows my ability to focus the camera and deter-mine good lighting and baxkgrounds.

The photo above was a headshot from an inter-view. I had to determine the most important words to be on the board taken from the inter-view. Also, I had to change the shutter speed to adjust to the lighting and for the focus to be on the subject. This shows my sections ability to cover varieties of people and take a headshot.
