Theory? Based upon Stephen Krashen's theory of language acquisition to "focus on the message, more than the form." Virtually Found Poetry allows students to play with the form (i.e. syntax).

How? We are doing a unit on the 1930s in my class. I design a lot of my own lessons as a supplement to the book. This week we went over The New Deal and how it supported artist. I chose the song Brother Can You Spare a Dime from 1932 by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg and Jay Gorney. I chose the version by Bing Crosby, which was released the day before Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was elected president.

I handed out the lyrics to the song. We listened to the song together and talked about what the song writers are trying to ask. In short, the song ask why men who built the nation, were feeling abandoned by the nation. Students worked in groups to find words they liked and I typed the words in the computer so that our class poem may be projected for everyone to participate.

We had fun creating our poems. Please see the pictures below. Thank you for your time! : )
