Eligibility
• AHRC funding is open to all UK and EU students, who meet the academic and residency eligibility criteria as detailed in the AHRC studentship guidelines (PDF), Section 7 (page 60) and Annex A (page 92).
Studentships Types and Values
• Full-time studentships – Payment of approved fees (as set and agreed by
the Research Councils) – currently £3,900 p.a. – Maintenance grant (or stipend) for the student –
currently £13,726 p.a. – Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) which
includes UK / Overseas fieldwork and attendance at conferences (by application only for current PhD students)
Studentships Types and Values
• Part-time studentships – A part-time studentship consists of: – payment of approved pro-rata part-time fees – a pro-rata maintenance grant @ 50% (stipend) – Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) which
includes UK / Overseas fieldwork and attendance at conferences (by application only for current PhD students).

– EU students, unless they have been living in the UK for 3 years previous to the start of their studentship, are normally awarded a Fees Only studentship.

The Application Process: Stage 3 submit two references (deadline 14 Jan 2014) Two references must be received by the M3C University at which you wish to study. These must be submitted by your nominated referees. You must ensure that referees write your references on the relevant M3C form below. Reference Form: Leicester and DMU
• Referees are asked to comment on the following:
: the quality of the applicant’s academic work and performance to date (providing evidence to support comments)
: evidence of the candidate’s aptitude and preparedness for the course of study.
: applicant’s preparedness to undertake the proposed research project, capacity for original thought and ability to grasp concepts and reason analytically.

Student selection procedure: Stage 1
• You will be interviewed by the university to which you have applied in January.
• If accepted as a research student, your M3C application will go forward to a body within your chosen university which will decide whether or not to put your application forward to the next stage for consideration
Student selection procedure: Stage 2
• In February, Leicester and DMU will consider the applications for M3C studentships they have received, and assess them according to the usual AHRC criteria. (Similar exercises will be organised by the universities in Birmingham and Nottingham.)
• The ones that are ranked highest will go through to the next stage of the process…
Final selection: Stage 3
• In March 2014, the final selection will be made by the consortium subject panels
• Applicants for DTP places will be informed of the outcome by M3C at the end of March 2014
• If you are successful, you will also receive a letter from the university confirming the funding arrangements
• If you are unsuccessful, you still have an offer of a place and can look for other funding opportunities
