Yard Waste Collection

Collection occurs twice a month on the

first and third Wednesday from April-

October, and once a month on the third

Wednesday from November-March.

Yard waste refers to twigs, sticks,

branches, and tree and shrubbery

trimmings only. No grass, weeds or

leaves will be accepted.

Individual branches are to be no larger

than 4” in diameter and no longer than 4’

in length.

To prepare for collection, all yard waste

MUST be contained in one of the

following ways and set out at the curb, or

it will not be collected:

-In trash cans

-Bagged in biodegradable paper bags

-Bundled with string.

For branches that are too unwieldy to

bundle together, a maximum of 10 loose

branches (4’x4”) may be put out at the

curb per collection.

Yard waste is to be placed at the curb the

evening before collection, or no later

than 6am on the day of collection. If it is

not out at the curb by the time the truck

arrives to collect, the truck will not be

sent back to collect later. Please report

yard waste placed out at the curb

correctly and on time that has not been

collected to the Township at 610-565-

Community Day cont. from p. 1

On stage we will welcome the Penncrest

High School singers and dancers and Makin’

Music. We will also feature Julia Zane, an

amazing singer who will lead us in the

National Anthem. Julia will also perform

again later in the day.

The Committee is pleased that Township

Manager, Bruce Clark and residents Gary

Grove and Jack Masters have signed on to

share the day as the Masters of Ceremonies.

Community Day would not be possible

without the continued support from our

event sponsors. Returning after countless

years of dedication as Visionary Sponsors are

the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union,

Granite Run Buick GMC and BET Investments.

In addition we would like to thank Laxton

Trash Removal, A. J. Blosenski, Inc., Riddle

Hospital, Republic Bank, Kelly & Close

Engineers, Riley Riper Hollin & Colagreco and

Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Community Day brings together family,

friends, business owners and Middletown

residents and other local communities and

residents to enjoy a fun-filled day of

entertainment, food and activities, while

concentrating on building community pride.

Township Council Would Like Your Feedback on the

Recycling & Yard Waste Collection Program

This spring, Middletown Township will re-

bid the next 3-year recycling collection

contract for single-family residences. The

contract includes collection of curbside

single-stream recycling as well as yard

waste (sticks & branches).

In preparation for the re-bid process,

Township Council would like to get your

feedback on aspects of the current

program. We welcome any ideas for

improvements you may have.

An on-line survey has been posted under

the Announcements section of the

T o w n s h i p w e b s i t e ,

www.middletowntownship.org. From

there, you can click on a link that will

direct you to the survey. You can then

complete and submit the survey

electronically. The results will help

Council make decisions on setting

collection frequency for the next 3-year

contract, as well as inform them of any

general issues they should be aware of

when bidding the next contract.

Paper copies of the survey will also be

available at the Township Building, or can

be mailed upon request.

PECO Green Region Open Space Grant which

partially funded the purchase and installation

of new benches, picnic tables, bike racks, and

trash receptacles to complement the existing

active and passive recreational features that

have already been implemented at the park.

Two carved wooden Sleighton Park signs

were also purchased, and are awaiting

installation at each entrance to the park, one

Historical Society News The Middletown Township Historical Society

would like to thank all for the tremendous

response to our February mailing. We are

working hard to acquire a permanent

location to house our archives and

memorabilia and make them available for

everyone to enjoy. There is a great deal of

interest in helping us achieve this goal and

we are optimistic that it will soon be

accomplished. We are always looking for old

photos and documents that can be scanned

and added to our files. Contact us at

[email protected] if you have items you

would like to share. Look for MTHS at

Community Day on May 13.

Chester Creek Interceptor Phase 1 (CCIP1)

Update

The Middletown Sewer Authority's contractor

completed construction of the CCIP1 project.

The sanitary sewer main was officially put

into service during the month of December

2017. Sanitary sewer is now flowing through

the interceptor. The completion of this phase

of the Interceptor also allowed the Authority

to shut down the existing Glen Riddle Pump

Station.

Chester Creek Interceptor Phase 2 (CCIP2)

Update

The CCIP2 project was put out to public bid

and the contract was awarded to PACT

Construction in the amount of $4,820,732.

This phase of the interceptor consists of the

construction of a sanitary sewer collection

main extending from Knowlton Road along

the Chester Creek to the new Delaware

County Regional Water Quality Control

Authority (DELCORA) pump station near

Bridgewater Road. The actual construction of

this phase is scheduled to begin in May and

is projected to take approximately 1 year to

complete. During this phase of construction,

there will be detours along sections of Creek

Road. The sewer authority would like to

thank everyone in advance for their

understanding and cooperation during

construction of the Interceptor.

Dutton Mill Interceptor Project

The Authority is happy to report the

construction of the Dutton Mill Interceptor

force main is complete and sewage is now

flowing through the force main.

Landscape & Plant wisely!

Beautifully landscaped yards can be a joy to

homeowners that can turn into expensive

nightmares. Roots from trees can invade

building sewers and laterals. Roots thrive in

the warm, moist, nutrient-rich atmosphere

above the water level inside sanitary sewers.

The flow of warm water inside the sewer pipe

causes water vapor to escape to the cold

and/or dry soil surrounding the pipe. Tree

roots are attracted to the water vapor leaving

the pipe and they follow the vapor trail to

the source of the moisture, which is usually

from cracks or loose joints in the sewer pipe.

Tree roots will penetrate the opening to

reach the nutrients and moisture inside the

pipe. This continues in winter even though

trees appear to be dormant. Severe root

intrusion and structurally damaged pipes will

require replacement. Tree roots growing

inside sewer pipes can become a costly

problem for township residents.

The best way to avoid this situation is to

plant wisely. Do not plant trees within 20

feet from any building sewer, lateral, or

sewer main. That small little twig that you

plant today can grow into a big tree in a few

years. Roots can travel far underground,

across property lines and under paved roads.

Minimize future problems by planning and

planting wisely. Also, please remember that

In Pennsylvania, homeowners and

contractors are required to contact PA

OneCall, by dialing 8-1-1 at least three

business days before beginning any digging

or excavation project. Please visit

www.paonecall.org for more information.
