Season PreviewMiddle Tennessee’s Blue Raider soccer team

has a new look for the beginning of the millennium.Scott Ginn has taken over the program, be-

coming only the second soccer coach in schoolhistory. The team also moves into the difficult SunBelt Conference for the first time, making theteam’s task an arduous one this season.

However, Ginn’s job is made a bit easier withthe considerable talent that is returning to the fold. The team welcomes back nine of the 11 startersthat equaled the school record of 10 wins a yearago, and each spot on the field holds consider-able experience.

All in all, it should be yet another year of soccerexcitement on tap at Middle Tennessee. Here isa positional breakdown for the Blue Raider squad.

GOALKEEPERThe goalie position is perhaps the most sea-

soned on the field. Jennifer Robb returns for hersenior season and should be firmly entrenchedas the starting netminder. Robb holds everycareer record at the position, and the 2000season should be a continuation of that success.

Junior Jessica Busey, who saw limited playingtime last season, and incoming freshman EmilyShrum will compete for playing time behind Robb.

DEFENSEThe defensive unit lost a veteran player with

the graduation of Yolanda Henderson after the

1999 season, but several young players sawconsiderable action a year ago. SophomoreSarah Schulz set a career and single-seasonrecord with 11 assists last season. Senior Mor-gan Guoan will return to help anchor the defen-sive corp, adding considerable experience to thisunit.

Finnish sophomore Veera Viljakainen, whosaw limited duty a year ago, should be a biggerfactor in the team’s plans this season.

MIDFIELDERSSeveral key players return to the Blue Raiders

in the midfield this season. Sherri Robbins, theteam’s top returning scorer with 10 goals in 1999,should anchor this line. Senior Lindsay Hendersonis back for her final campaign, adding maturity andleadership to what should be a youthful unit.Along with Henderson, juniors Rachael Sulkers,Megan Holsten, and Tiffany Moore also addexperience to the backbone of the midfield line.

Two newcomers will also get into the mix in themidfield. Highly-touted freshmen Lindsay Boppand Emily Carter should make a splash rightaway. Fellow newcomer Megan McGregor willbe forced to sit out the 2000 season due to an ACLinjury and subsequent surgery.

FORWARDSThis unit took a blow when career scoring

leader Hailee Walsh decided to transfer to an-

other program, but several key players look totake up the slack.

Senior Kenya Hickey is the elder statesman ofthis group and will provide leadership for theyounger players. Sophomores Allison Schulzand Beth Maskey combined for eight goals andthree assists last year and will need to be thecatalysts to jump start the offense in the earlygoing. Look for other players to shift to the forwardspot as the season progresses.

SCHEDULEThe 2000 soccer schedule is shaping up to be

one of the most difficult in school history. The BlueRaiders are competing in the Sun Belt Confer-ence for the first time, meaning that several newleague foes could present problems for the youth-ful Middle Tennessee team.

Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Den-ver, Florida International, Louisiana-Lafayette,North Texas, and South Alabama will be chal-lenging opponents for the Blue Raiders in thisinaugural SBC season. Western Kentucky is setto join the Sun Belt in 2001.

Outside the league, several difficult opponentswill provide tough tests for the Blue Raiders.Former OVC rivals Eastern Illinois, Murray State, and Southeast Missouri are on the slate as wellas Appalachian State, Furman, and Florida At-lantic among others.

FINAL WORDMany returners felt that the 1999 edition under-

achieved despite reaching the 10-win plateau forthe second straight year. The nucleus of the teamreturns for the first season of the new centurywanting to prove that the talent level at MiddleTennessee can compete at a higher level. De-spite the question marks that dot the Blue Raidersoccer landscape, there is a feeling that the teamwill leave a mark in its first season as a Sun Beltmember.

Jennifer Robb (center) has reason to smile knowing that nine starters return from last year’s10-win squad and that the Blue Raiders will be heading to the Sun Belt Conference.

It is often said that the path to athletic greatnessleads through the weight room. It certainly ringstrue at Middle Tennessee, but Blue Raider teamshave a decided advantage over most of theiropponents.

The addition to Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadiumalso allowed for a 10,000-plus square foot weightroom facility adjacent to the north end zone for useby all Middle Tennessee student-athletes and theend result is a strength training area that rivals anyin the country. The weight room has been laudedby many people as better than any in the imme-diate area, including SEC and Conference USAschools.

The facility, which opened in January of 1999,greets student-athletes with 20,714½ pounds ofplates and dumbbells, but the sheer volume ofweights is not the most impressive aspect of theroom. It is equipped with nine Wynmor powerracks, nine Wynmor platforms, and nine Yorkhalf-racks. The equipment list continues to growfrom there. Hammer Strength equipment roundsout the room with five ground-base jammers, adead lift, a leg press, a leg curl, and a legextension. Other Hammer Strength equipment inthe facility includes a bench press, a militarypress, a row machine, neck machine, pull-up,and pull-over.

An impressive array of dumbbells is alsoprovided for the student-athletes’ use. Two setseach of dumbbells ranging from five to 150pounds are kept on racks around the room.Mirrors ring the walls of the room to help student-athletes ensure that they are using proper form

throughout their workouts. Cardiovascular equip-ment such as treadmills and stationary bikes arealso available for use in the facility.

Fringe benefits may also be found in the weightroom. A television with cable and a state-of-the-art sound system has been installed for theenjoyment of the student-athletes. Two offices forthe strength coaches are located in the room, along with restrooms and a small hospitality area. The weight room also provides direct access tothe football stadium and a large meeting room. The meeting room is used not only by the BlueRaider football team on game days and for filmbreakdown, but press conferences, HPERSclasses, and other functions are held in this space. The meeting room is fully equipped with high techaudiovisual equipment to enhance the learning ofstudents using the space.

This newest addition to the Blue Raider athleticfacilities is the crown jewel for all Middle Tennes-see athletes.

The weight room is supervised by head strengthand conditioning coach Matt Riley, associateRobb Rogers, assistant Darren Edgington andgraduate assistant Cedric Walthaw.

Riley, a former Middle Tennessee footballplayer, oversees the entire operation and wasresponsible for the design and layout of the facility.Following his graduation from Middle Tennesseein 1988, Riley was the head strength and condi-tioning coach at Tennessee Tech in 1989 and1990 before taking over the same role at South-ern Miss in 1991 and 1992.

Murfreesboro, Tenn., the home to Middle Ten-nessee State University, is one of the fastest grow-ing communities in Tennessee. Located just 32miles from Nashville, Murfreesboro has a sto-ried past and an extremely bright future.

The city was founded in 1811 but originallywas known as Cannonsburgh. However, thename was changed to Murfreesboro after only33 days in honor of Revolutionary War Col.Hardy Murfree, who was one of the early set-tlers of the town. Murfreesboro, which is consid-ered the geographic center of the state of Ten-nessee, served as the state capital from 1819 to1825. However, the larger economic base andriver port of Nashville drew the capital statusaway from Murfrees-boro. Murfreesboro didremain a significanteconomic center, though. This was duemainly to the city beinglocated between Nash-ville and Chattanooga.

The geographics ofMurfreesboro continueto aid its development. It is still an important stopalong the Nashville/Chattanooga route, butit is not that fact alonethat makes Murfrees-boro so desirable. Itsproximity to three ma-jor interstate routes inTennessee make itreadily accessible fromnearly anywhere in thestate. Also, the MiddleTennessee area is lo-cated in the demographic center of 70 percent ofthe population of the United States. These fac-tors combine to generate considerable growthin Murfreesboro.

Industry has become an important corner-stone of the economy of Murfreesboro duringthis period of time. Manufacturers such as Aladdin,Nissan, Bridgestone/Firestone, and Georgia Pa-cific have located into the Murfreesboro/Ruther-ford County area and make a continual impacton the area. Recently, several shopping cen-ters, restaurants, and other diversions havehelped Murfreesboro become one of the mostsought-after communities in the Midstate region.

The city of Murfreesboro is the largest city inRutherford County with an estimated populationof over 52,000. The county as a whole is hometo approximately 150,000 residents.

Rutherford County has seen unprecedentedgrowth over the past few years. A state censusestimate in 1995 showed that the population ofthe county had increased 25 percent since the1990 census.

During this time, Middle Tennessee as a wholehas seen tremendous change. Population in-creases, continued construction, and increasedmedia attention have helped to thrust Nashvilleand the surrounding areas into the forefront ofurbanism. This growth has come with some prob-

lems, but it has alsocreated some tremen-dous opportunities forthe residents of thearea. Nashville con-structed a world-classdowntown arenawhich opened early in1997, and it has al-ready attracted twoprofessional sportstenants. The Nash-ville Kats of the ArenaFootball League re-cently completed itssecond year of com-petition and the NHL’sNashville Predatorsbegan prowling theice in the fall of 1998.The AFL ChampionTitans have taken upresidency in Nash-ville and started play-

ing in a state-of-the-art stadium beginning in thefall of 1999.

Murfreesboro is growing by leaps andbounds, but it still has managed to retain most ofthe small-town charm that made it so appealingyears ago. Even though the town has gonethrough massive change in recent times, thereare still some things that stay the same. It re-mains a quality place to raise children, work, and carry on day-to-day activities. It is thesequalities that will keep Murfreesboro growing ina positive way.

TraditionsIn mythology, the winged horse pos-

sessed superior cunning and speed. Thethundering horse of the gods was en-trusted to carry the awesome lightningbolts and could only be harnessed by anoble one with a pure heart. As withsuccess in all things, it requires characteras well as talent and strength to mount andride the fabled winged horse.

This winged horse is a fitting symbolof a university that has earned its wingsand excels in many academic arenas, among them historic preservation, teachertraining, aerospace, political science, horsescience and recording industry. But thewinged horse is more than a symbol ofphysical accomplishment; it’s also a sym-bol of character and the correct wielding ofpower.

The challenge of all great universitiesand university athletic departments is toadvance student-athletes in character aswell as ability, to allow powerful steeds tosoar at higher levels. This winged horse isa testimony to what Middle Tennesseestudents, athletes, and alumni represent.

For its nobility and character, thewinged horse was once immortalized inthe stars. Now, with breathtaking speedand thundering, unbridled power, light-ning strikes, forevermore, fear in the heartsof Blue Raider opponents!

In the early days of athletics at MiddleTennessee State University, the teamswere known by several nicknames. Amongthese were Teachers, Normalities andPedagogues.

In 1934, it was decided that the schoolneeded a specific nickname, and duringthe football season of that year, the Mur-freesboro Daily News Journal held a con-test to name the team.

Charles Sarver, then a Middle Ten-nessee football player and later principalat White County High School in Sparta,Tenn., won the $5 prize for his entry of“Blue Raiders.” Sarver later indicated hehad “borrowed” the nickname of theColgate Red Raiders, but substitutedMTSU Blue for Colgate Red.

Ever since that time, Middle Tennes-see athletic teams have been known asthe Blue Raiders.

The symbol of Confederate GeneralNathan Bedford Forrest on a horse wasfirst used about 1945, when then-univer-sity President Q.M. Smith instructed Pub-lic Relations Director Gene Sloan to beginusing the figure in conjunction with thenickname.

In 1965, the Student Government As-sociation established strict specifications

Legend of Lightning Blue Raider Nickname as to what size the student must be whowould emulate Forrest. This was done, itis believed, because there was only oneuniform available and a “good fit” wasdesired.

In sensitivity to the African-Americancommunity at the school, the figure ofGeneral Forrest was abandoned.

For a time, the “unofficial” mascot forthe Blue Raiders was a costumed, car-toon-like dog. A reasonable facsimile of ablue tick hound, the affable character wasdubbed “Ole Blue.”

It was on January 17, 1998 that thecurrent mascot, “Lightning,” was born. Themascot was unveiled along with an attrac-tive eye-catching logo. The introduction ofLightning gave an identity to the nicknameBlue Raiders.
