VISIT TO THE MIDDLE TEMPLE
TUESDAY 11 March 2014 at 4.00pm
Middle Temple Lane London EC4Y 9AT
The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple is one of four ancient Inns of the Court,
- Inner Temple, Lincoln’s Inn, and Gray’s Inn, which are independent self-governing
legal colleges. It is called an Inn because the buildings and courtyards around it
provided living quarters for members of the Society. The Middle Temple is governed
by Masters of the Bench known as Benchers and meetings of the Benchers have
always been called Parliament. The meetings were originally held in the old Hall of
the Knights Templars which was demolished in 1639. The new Hall took 10 years to
build and was opened in 1570. The Hall is 100’ long and 40’ wide with the apex of the
roof at 59’ high. The building has a magnificent double hammerbeam roof and
beautifully carved screen, all in oak.
