“Foundations of Faith, Footprints for the Future” – Our 20th Anniversary theme

The start of the College year brings with it endless possibili-ties. At this time of year, I get excited about many things and one of them, I have to admit, is buying new stationery. The promise of the first crisp page in the book that will hold the story of the year ahead is something I relish. This year, my notebook has on its cover a lovely quote from Einstein; “Learn from yesterday, Live for today, Hope for tomorrow.”

As I write, the connection between our College theme “Foundations of Faith – Footprints for the future” and Einstein’s quote bring to mind the Hope and Promise that Christ brings to us each day and that our potential to make significant contributions within and beyond our community by using our God given gifts.

Welcome back to a new school year. It promises to be a very busy and exciting one and I am looking forward to working with students, parents and staff to ensure that it is a productive and rewarding experience for our whole Col-lege community.

In the Senior School this term there will be a big focus on ‘Grit’, that is, the persistence needed to ensure that all our students are able to achieve their ‘Personal Bests’.

As we know the world can be a tough place and the re-search suggests that young people with grit are better able to cope with their studies (school and university). This is a really important part of positive psychology and wellbeing and I look forward to sharing more on this throughout the year. If you are interested in finding out what your levels of personal grit are, there is a survey on the Penn State Univer-sity Authentic Happiness website, and more importantly it’s free.

As usual our expectations of uniform, behaviour and atti-tude to studies will be a focus in the Senior School. Parents and students should ensure they are familiar with the poli-cies of the College, particularly the uniform, mobile phone and social media policies as it is these issues that cause the most concerns in our day-to-day life. Some key points to note from the latter include that mobile devices may be used in classrooms at the discretion of the teacher and for educational purposes only and that no member of the College should post or respond to material that is offen-sive, obscene, defamatory, threatening, harassing, bullying, discriminatory, hateful, threatening, violent, racist, sexist, pornographic, infringes copyright or is otherwise unlawful or might cause damage to the College’s reputation or bring it into disrepute.

Students who drive to College are reminded a ‘Permission to Drive Form’ must be completed and lodged at Senior School Administration. Please note that any students who

Welcome back to the start of a new school year. I hope that 2013 is a wonderful year for all of our families. A year full of love, learning and that wonderful combination of those terms - the love of learning. Having met with Mr Stephen Huth several times over the last few months, I am incredibly excited to be taking over the stewardship of the Middle School and enormously grateful for all of Stephen’s hard work both in leading middle schooling at St Andrews but also in preparing a smooth path for my arrival. It is also pertinent at this time to acknowledge that there is a new structure in the Middle School with the establishment of Year Level Coordinators across Years 7-9. Mrs Lisa Roper (7), Ms Colleen Ijurco (8) and Mr Christophe Tanguy (9) will be responsible for the further development of our year level pastoral systems and any enquiries about matters relating to specific year levels should be directed to them.

At the start of any year it is worth reflecting upon the val-ues that tie us together as a community and I would direct your attention to the front section of the diary where not only can you find the necessary expectations of uniform and manner, but also key information on the philosophies and beliefs underpinning an education at St Andrews. I look forward to becoming part of the vibrant St Andrews com-munity and meeting many of you throughout the course of the coming weeks. I am incredibly excited by the opportu-nity to work your children and joining you in relishing the joys that their respective journeys through adolescence will surely bring.

The beginning of a new school year can have much antici-pation attached to it. As a parent, I feel a sense of hope for my children's achievement, their wellbeing, their growth toward maturity, new friendships and I am eager to do my part to support them at home. I know I will grow as a

person through the experience and look forward to part-nering with the school to help my kids make the most of the experience. As a teacher, I feel a great sense of respon-sibility to fulfill parent and student expectations. I know St Andrews has a great reputation for partnering with parents in the support of our students through the year. I am ex-cited about opportunities that lie ahead for St Andrews and in my role hope to assist in making this year a positive year for our students' growth. As a new member of staff I have been thoroughly im-pressed by the authentic care, organisation and intellect of the staff I have been working with already this year. The sense of purpose in their work and their deep sense of mission to support students has been overwhelming. I am very pleased to be working in a College that has such a strong vision for celebrating the gospel, nurturing the individual, and creating life long learners and I look forward to opportunities to meet with parents at events such as the the annual Fete. The work has begun and our passion for young people's growth, learning and resilience is a priority, that we seek to be faithful to - Semper Fidelis.
