ChessCompetitions on Friday afternoons have now concluded. Throughout the season the boys to used their chess skills and strategies as they attempted to checkmate their opponent. A round-robin system saw players versing different opponents from week to week, with scoring done at the end of each game. These scores were tallied over the season to give the eventual winners in each section.

Year 6 – 1st Connor E; 2nd Callum O’D.Year 7 – 1st Ben C; 2nd Hayden C and Aaron M tied.

A special mention goes to James N who has now completed three years of chess competitions, the only student to do so. Congratulations to all students who competed this year and I hope to see you in 2016 competing for the new season.

BasketballYear 6/7 SAPSASA Basketball7 AugustDuring the day we played six games; unfortunately our first game resulted in a narrow margin loss to Eden Hills. However, the boys moved forward in a positive manner winning their next five games against Henley Beach Primary School, Unity College, Murray Bridge, St Francis de Sales, Mt Barker, Pulteney Grammar and Macclesfield Primary School. As a result, the boys proceeded to play the final game against the winner of Group B, St. Peter’s Woodlands. The game was tightly contested with a draw result on the final siren. Extra time was given and unfortunately our boys were defeated by one goal. Congratulations to all the boys involved who played with such enthusiasm and effort. Particular mention goes to both of our Year 9 Coaches, Harrison Chapman and Nathan Cooper who were outstanding, performing the role of coaches, leading with maturity and enthusiasm. Once again, all of our boys represented our College with pride.

15 AugustYear 8/9SHC MS D (60) defeated Scotch (6)The boys played flawlessly in what was their first win for the season. Laurence, Brad and Tyson made an impact early on in the game scoring our first 16 points all in the first quarter. Seb and Kane had a fantastic game, dominating the rebounds. While Luke and Bryce didn’t let up on defence the entire game, their efforts being reflected on the score board with Scotch only scoring 6 points. Overall it was a fantastic game played by all. Well done.

23 AugustYear 8/9SHC MS D (12) were defeated by Mercedes (26)It was a tough loss for the boys who played their last game with the end score certainly NOT reflecting the effort they put in. Brad had a fantastic game leading in the scoring while Seb, Kane and Luke played fantastic defence. Despite the loss they played a great game and I can’t wait to see how they go next season.

24 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS 8 (35) defeated SHC MS 7 (8)Very unselfish play by everyone on the team. Great shooting Daniel, good rebounds Blake. Great effort in defence Alistair. Will, Joel and Jon – great teamwork.

Squash20 AugustSemi-Finals SHC finished 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 positions in the 2015 High School Squash Competition. The only problem with that is that we play against each other and as a coach that is very rewarding but frustrating. SHC 5 (10 games) defeated SHC 8 (2 games)

SHC 6 (6 games) defeated SHC 4 (0 games)Grand FinalSHC 6 – Sam C, James B, Jordan B and Tyler R (7 games) defeated SHC 5 (5 games)

This is a summary of all the players who competed in squash this year – in no particular order:Darcy B ‘Spiderman’ – An outstanding player who was runner up in the State Knockout competition. Powerful serve, moves around the court extremely quick and has a drop-shot that his opponents can’t detect.Daniel L ‘Mr Reliable’ – Unbelievable player; is a pocket-rocket. Has the speed around the court to retrieve any ball. His serving is first-class and can place the ball anywhere he likes. Exciting player to watch and is not intimidated by any player from any team.Jordan B ‘Mr Squash’ – Such a talented player. He is a very intelligent player who has the ability to access his opponents very quickly. Has incredible praise from two State coaches who believe he can make it to the top. Jordan hits the ball to all sections of the court before he hits the winning shot; undefeated in all games played.Darcy R ‘Mr Freeze’ – He’s cool under pressure. His movement around the court is outstanding. Has the ability to quickly intimidate his opponents and control the game.Harry M ‘Harry Potter’ – His racket is his magic wand. Harry is left-handed which causes his opponents a lot of frustration on the court. He has the ability to hit a forehand drive down the wall or drop the ball from the back of the court to win the point. Don’t let his size fool you – a dangerous player. Will D ‘Mr Versatility’ – There is nothing that Will can’t do on a sporting arena and squash is no exception. A very talented player who moves quickly around the court; his powerful serving and placement of the ball is worth coming out to watch. A great season.Nathan L ‘The Enforcer’ – Nathan has many different shots he plays in a game. He positions himself in the middle of the court and that is where he dominates the game.Harry R ‘Iceman’ – An outstanding player who dictates every game he plays. He entertains the crowd by playing freakish shots all over the court. A fast and powerful player who was also undefeated this season; unbelievable to watch. Tyler R ‘Quiet Assassin’ – A no-nonsense player who has a job to do for his team. A very skilful and determined player who moves quickly around the court; he has a powerful serve and an incredible drop-shot. Tyler is another player who is undefeated this season; an outstanding feat considering the calibre of players in this competition.Tom W ‘Quiet Achiever’ – Tom doesn’t say much – he leaves all his talking on the court; he has taken many big name scalps this season. Tom moves quickly into position

and can boast or drop-shot the ball from the centre of the court. A great season.Aaron J ‘Unpredictable’ – Aaron can be switched on and can outplay any of his opponents. He has many different shots that confuse his opponents and his serving has improved this season. A very talented player.Henry McD ‘Most Improved’ – Henry has improved in each game played. He uses his reach and height to dominate the game from the centre of the court. His extra coaching from his dad has ‘improved’ his game out of sight.Sam C ‘Sam I Am’ – Another outstanding player. With a background in tennis, he has adapted his game to become the No 4 player in the State. He is capable of winning a game from his powerful serves and placement of the ball around the court.James B “Bamm Bamm’ – Has the most powerful serve of any player in his team. He is surprisingly quick around the court which intimidates his opponent. Serve, drop-shot, boast, placement of the ball, there is nothing he needs to improve on; a complete player.Fraser “Captain’ M – A very talented sportsman. An outstanding soccer player who has brought guts and determination to the squash court. His ‘never give in’ attitude has won many games for his team against experienced players. His serving has improved this season. Well done Captain.Lachlan N ‘Popeye the Sailor’ – A very intelligent player who quickly works out his opponents weaknesses. He is the master of the drop-shot and boast off the wall. His speed around the court is electrifying, running down and winning many points that his opponent thought they had won.Caleb R ‘Mr Backhand’ – Has the best backhand drive down the wall consistently by a player I have seen all season. When Caleb is switch on he is extremely hard to beat. He has the Sacred Heart spirit of never giving up and has had many marathon matches. However, sometimes he must be more focussed when things go wrong.Alex H ‘The Flash’ – Very fast around the court. He has the ability to move to the back of the court to the front of the court and run down a point in a rally. A powerful server who can dominate a game from start to finish.Harry H ‘Double H’ – Has had a very successful season and works very hard on his skills to develop into a very capable squash player. Harry always controls the centre of the court which has won many games for his team. A very promising player.

A Principal once said “Sacred Heart boys can do anything” and I agree. A special mention to all parents and carers who supported their sons in squash this year. G Stewart (very proud coach)

Football22 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B2 defeated SHC MS B3A hard-fought contest. Awesome team effort by the lads, they have grown into a very good footy team by working hard, working together, enjoying each other’s work and improving; every player has contributed through the season. Special thanks to the players for listening and doing as asked, Peter Fitzgerald for his help throughout the year and all the other parents and carers who have chipped in and helped or have supported our lads. Also, thanks to Jody Keller, David Maglieri, Ben Dray and Adam Rice for their work behind the scenes organising school footy, it is greatly appreciated.

8 AugustYear 8SHC MS B (15.9: 99) defeated Prince Alfred (0.1: 1)The Year 8B side continued its strong recent form with a dominant win over PACs B side in muddy conditions in the Parklands. After playing a lot of A-grade sides the boys are showing what they can do against lesser opposition. Tom N has shown a marked improvement in recent weeks and was outstanding at ground-level today. Harrison D showed his class repeatedly in a very strong effort. Kyle P played well again in a variety of roles. Michael G contested well. All boys who turned up worked tirelessly and overall it was a very pleasing team effort.

22 AugustYear 8SHC MS B (4.2: 25) were defeated by Immanuel (8.5: 53)In our last game of the year our boys put in a typically honest competitive performance going down by 4 goals. We led early but a combination of the opposition’s fresh legs on the bench and bigger bodies around the ground was too much for us in the second half. All our players again provided solid efforts in tough wet conditions – Tom W returned to the ground after a heavy hit to his nose, Jonas V kept running hard late in the game while Matt B provided a strong contest all day. Thanks to all the boys who played for our team during the year, we showed plenty of improvement during the season and also lots of character when playing against the numerous school A-grade sides we came up against.

15 AugustYear 9SHC MS B (2.1: 7) were defeated by Pembroke (20.25: 145)The Year 9B team had a disappointing end to the season, being outclassed by an A-grade team once again. It was a challenge too great. Although the boys never gave in, it is a difficult task when they are not playing against players of their own standard. Best Players: Liam F’s desperation and tackling was just wonderful to watch, he continually harassed the Pembroke ball carriers and applied two of the best wrap-up tackles all year. Josh F provided a solid avenue through CHB, stopping consistent attacks by the opposition. Sam M was bobbing up everywhere, finding space and driving the ball forward when chances came.

Thanks to all the boys who played 9B in 2015, we had some excellent wins (the best one winning the Intercol game) and we had some thrashings from A-grade teams. Thanks to Mr Ottens for all his support during the year. Good Luck to all who choose to represent SHC at senior school next year, I will watch your progress with interest.James Hyams9B Coach

Soccer8 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B2 (0) were defeated by Woodcroft (6)Although we lost, our defenders, especially our goal keeper, put in such a great effort.

8 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B4 defeated by St Peter’s due to forfeit.

8 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B3 (7) defeated Blackfriars (2)Another team effort for the boys in B3; goals aplenty with 3 to Aidan; 2 to Connor; 1 to Joachim; and an own-goal forced by Harry. Great all-round game from Joe with tireless running and three classy assists. Dylan led the defence superbly and great contributions across the board. Nice to see Josh have his best game for us. The passing and bringing team mates into the game is particularly pleasing for the coach. Well done!

22 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B2 (0) were defeated by St Ignatius (5)The team put in a great effort for their final game. Unfortunately we didn’t have all our players but B2 fought till the end. A huge thank you to all of the parents and carers who came out every Saturday to support and encourage this fantastic team.

22 AugustYear 6/7SHC MS B3 (0) were defeated by Woodcroft (3)Another fantastic team effort from the boys. Déjà vu with the guys battling hard against the bigger bodies of the opposition; an awesome second half kept them scoreless and created a few chances for our own. A wonderful season of football from the lads and it was very pleasing to see the team spirit and camaraderie so apparent. The improvement shown by all the boys has been very evident to those watching and bodes well for the future. Congratulations on a great season and special thanks to Terry, Joel, Denise and all the parents/carers who have either brought oranges, ran a line or just cheered us on. Thanks!
