How many countries in the Middle East?

• A:  Probably the best way to explain the location of the Middle East is to say that it lies at the junction of Asia, Africa, and Europe. It is important to note that there is no official definition of “the Middle East,” no universally agreed-upon set of countries that make up the region. Different people have different areas in mind when they use the term. Of the 28 countries that fall within this broader area, 22 lie completely in Asia and 2 lie completely in Africa. The remaining 4 countries are split between two continents:

How many continents are in How many continents are in the middle eastthe middle east??

• Middle East Countries by Continent Asia: Afghanistan, Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen (Note: The Gaza Strip and the West Bank are also part of Asia.)

• Africa: Libya, Sudan

• Africa-Asia: Egypt

• Asia-Europe: Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan

• Because the Middle East lies at the junction of Asia, Europe, and Africa, and because several of its countries straddle two of the continents, it's not surprising that the region's geography causes confusion.
