    ABSTRACT

Some Internet shoppers use online shopping aids to help them search for products and services,

and to assist them in making in detail comparison among alternatives. By presenting comparison

information on salient criteria (e.g., price) from multiple vendors of a specific product, online

shopping aids can increase the number of alternatives considered, while reducing search time and

costs. In this project, we report the results of an experiment intended to examine online shopping

perceptions between two Internet shopping groups: one that used an online shopping aid and

another that did not use the aid. Our results show that online shopping aids are convenient and

reduce search efforts. Based on the findings, we discuss possible implications for research and

    practice.

Better Business BureauThe Better Business Bureau is a private agency formed in 1912. It operates in both Canada and the

US. Its goal is to help consumers by publishing reports on the reliability of businesses, reducing

fraudulent business activities, educating both companies and businesses about rights and

responsibilities, providing information on charities, and resolving disputes.

Since the Better Business Bureau is a private organization, it has no regulatory power over

corporations. Companies must enroll and pay for membership in the Better Business Bureau;however, consumer and charity reports are not limited to member companies. In addition to

enrollment in the Better Business Bureau, companies must agree to dispute resolutionin order to

    maintain or claim membership.

Management Information System Mid TermAssignmentIn its best endeavors, the Better Business Bureau functions well as an agency that reports frequent

complaints on the part of consumers. However, complaints, unless the company is a member of the

Better Business Bureau remain unsubstantiated. If one is evaluating what companies are the most

likely to be ethical in their treatment of customers, then one or two unsubstantiated complaints may

not be regarded as enough evidence to condemn a company. However, if the Better Business

Bureau records numerous complaints about a companys business practices, this information is

    likely to be quite helpful.

The Better Business Bureau is also successful for those wishing to make charitable donations. The

agency lists the charities, which tend to spend the most money on their charitable causes and have

a known record of being economically responsible. Choosing a charity from this list likely means

that one is wisely bestowing ones money.

The Better Business Bureau is less successful in its area of dispute resolution. No company has to

submit to dispute resolution unless the company wishes to remain in good standing with the

agency. Disputes involving mishandling of large sums of money are better resolved in civil court.

However, when a consumer observes a company practicing fraudulent advertising, the best action

the consumer may take is to fill out a Better Business Bureau report, which takes just a few

moments on the Internet. The agency does make reports in the US to the Federal Trade

Commission, which may act on, or at the least investigate a high number of reports.

Since 1995, the Better Business Bureau has developed a group of videos, dealing with a number of

topics, such as information on car repair, identity theft, and childcare. These videos are distributed

to public libraries, where they can be checked out or viewed by interested consumers. Education of

this kind can be invaluable to consumers.

Though not all the intentions of the agency are equally fulfilled, the Better Business Bureau can be

a helpful resource to both businesses and consumers. Local representatives tend to be

accommodating.Consulting the agency can help provide one with information when one considers establishing a

    new business or purchasing any type of unfamiliar product or service. {1}

The Better Business Bureau, through local chapters, invites businesses to become dues-paying

members. In return, the BBBs allow their member businesses the use of their logo, mediation and

arbitration services, and access to their compiled information.

Management Information System Mid TermAssignmentThe Better Business Bureau gathers and archives information it receives about businesses, both

locally and nationally. It is unknown what vetting or verification processes the BBBs use with the

information they receive from consumers and other businesses, or if there is a verification process.

The BBB states its purpose is to collect information on business reliability, alert the public to

frauds against consumers and businesses, provide information on ethical business practices, and act

as mutually trusted intermediaries between consumers and businesses to resolve disputes.

Although it has "Bureau" in its title, the Better Business Bureau is not affiliated with federal, state,

or local government, and has no direct affiliation with any consumer protection government

authority. The BBB, as a privately held corporation, has no governmental authority over

    businesses.

    Coupons and Cash Back

FatWallet features a Coupons and Cash Back rebate shopping section, where users can find

thousands of money-saving coupons and discounts from hundreds of popular online retailers and

members can receive a percentage of purchases back from purchases made through referral links to

partnered retailers (originally known as FatCash). FatWallet has paid out over $28 million to its

members since 2005 (membership is free with an email address).

    Forums

FatWallet users frequently post the sale prices of major retailers before they were even released in

the retailers' advertisements, which embroiled the site in a major legal dispute in 2002 involving

Black Friday advertisements. Several retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Staples,

have served FatWallet with "take-down" notices pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,

claiming that their sale prices were copyrighted and must be removed from its site. In addition,

Wal-Mart served FatWallet with a subpoena to reveal the identity of the users that had posted Wal-

    on its threats to sue.

Though FatWallet initially complied with the take-down notices due to the fear of liability, within

two weeks it took the offensive, reposting the prices and arguing that the prices were

uncopyrightable facts rather than expression. FatWallet filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court

for the Northern District of Illinois against three of the retailers, seeking damages for their

knowing assertion of invalid copyright claims and a declaratory judgment that the take-down

provisions of the DMCA were unconstitutional. The case, FatWallet, Inc. v. Best Buy Enterprise

Services, Inc., was dismissed. The court ruled that FatWallet lacked standing to sue for any harm

done to its users for having their postings temporarily removed, and FatWallet did not assert any

injury to itself that the court found cognizable. Apparently, FatWallet executives welcome another

opportunity to settle the U.S. laws surrounding dissemination of advertising information, and are

confident that threats by retailers are bluff and bluster.

Since its launch, FatWallet has expanded its forums to include discussion on other financial topics

such as investments, banking and credit cards. The Finance forum is often mentioned in the Wall

Street Journal and the New York Times referencing personal finance topics ranging from credit

card topics to 401K investment tips.

    Best Deals

FatWallet launched Best Deals in 2009 (initially called Today's Top Deals) which features dozens

of researched deals found all over the internet by deal hunting staff and members. Best Deals also

features an Expert Picks section where deal hunting experts research bigger ticket retail products

like laptops, computers and HDTVs for the best value for the price and post their endorsements

    each week.

    Compare Prices

Compare Prices was launched in June 2010 as a price comparison that includes cash back, shipping

    costs and taxes.

    Relocation

Between March and April 2011, Fatwallet moved to Wisconsin from its home in northern Illinois

in order to avoid termination of affiliate contracts with online retailers such as Amazon.com that

provide about 30% of the companys revenue. An Illinois law passed in March 2011, the Main

Products for Sale Online. If your products are not listed in Froogle, you're missing one of thebiggest sources of targeted traffic to your online store. And did we mention that it's free?

How does it benefit you (merchants)?

Google's worldwide user base performs more than hundreds of millions searches a day. These

might be the people actively searching for the items you sell. That presents an enormous

opportunity to introduce your products to customers you might otherwise spend lots of money in

advertising trying to reach. The bottom line, if you're operating an online storefront, listing your

products in Froogle is one of the best (free) way to market to thousands of targeted customers.

How to submit your products to Froogle?

To get your products listed on Froogle, you need to create and submit a data feed. We understand

setting up a data feed manually is cumbersome and ineffective. This is exactly why we build in the

Froogle Feeder in ourwebShaper e-commerce software.

Once you have the online product catalogue ready, you can start creating the data feed, here is

what you will need to do:

Why Use Hot Deals for Online Shopping?

Everyone loves a great bargain. As savvy shoppers, people love to hunt through sales

advertisements, online discount offers, store sales, and coupon listings for the best, hottest bargain.

The old style of finding hot deals and bargains usually meant reading through sections of a local

newspaper and magazines for any bargains. However, the Internet has changed how shoppers find

    hot deals.

The best way to find hot deals and bargains is to utilize what are known as hot deals websites.

These websites offer listings of current deals found online. Some hot deals websites allow

shoppers to post their own deals while others rely on the website staff for posting deals. Hot deals

websites offer a savvy shopper the opportunity to obtain an up-to-date view of many current deals

being offered. A shopper can often find hot deals that may not be found elsewhere. On this site you

will find articles related to hot deals as well as reviews of the best hot deals sites to hep you in the

    decision making process.

Management Information System Mid TermAssignmentThe best hot deals websites offer a wide range of deal finding services. Many offer featured deal

listings while some may offer a section on daily deals that last only a day. Extra services often

include support for social networks, forums for discussing hot deals, descriptions of the deals

    listed, and even mobile content. {6}

How to Look for the Best Hot Deals

Many hot deal sites that are found in this review are top performers. They have better, more up-to-

date information on deals and tend to have better deal descriptions than other deal sites. However,

not all of the sites reviewed are equal and some may lack certain features that other deal sites have.

While some deal sites are very visually appealing, they may have fewer deals than ones that may

have a less polished design. In reviewing the hot deals sites, the following criteria were used:

    Overall Breadth of Deals Listed

While a few hot deals websites offer a listing of only one type of product, most offer a wide

range of deals on many product types. This criteria item shows how well each site offers a

wide range of deals. Sites that show the largest range of item types were ranked higher in

    this area.

    Site Navigation

One of the most important features of a deal site is its interface. Shoppers should be able to

easily navigate the different pages of the site and to use its different features. Other features

that make using a site usable or readable include high contrast text in section titles, easy to

view menus, page identifiers, and intuitive menus.

    Detailed Descriptions

How well each deal is described can be a great help for those deciding on whether to utilize

a deal. Elaborate descriptions can reveal if a deal has conditions, instructions for using a

discount offer, and even reviews of the deal.

    Accurate Deal Information

When looking at posted hot deals, is the information accurate? This question can be very

important as some deals found may be described inaccurately to the point that a shopper may

end up paying a higher price for an item. The most accurate listings can help a shopper avoid

purchasing items that they believe may be discounted but in fact are not.

    Quality of Deals Listed

The quality of hot deals posted pertains to the type of deal, the discount offered, and any

Hot Deals ClubWelcome to the Hot Deals Club, a collection of websites and RSS feeds built by deal seekers.

Unlike other sites that claim advertisements to be "deals" so they can make a quick buck, our goal

is to only show the hottest deals available because we love hot deals. We only post deals that we

truly feel are hot deals, which is why our users call us the most trusted deals portal site on the

Internet. Each deal can expire anytime after post and without notice, and most comments are based

    on years of experience.

Reseller RatingsReseller Ratings is a web-based business that solicits consumer reviews of online retailers and sells

"Merchant Memberships" to those stores. Rated stores are given two scores - a lifetime score and a

six-months score. As of 28 February 2011, the site claimed 691,411 user-submitted reviews for

    27,423 stores.

The site also lists deals, special offers, and other sales currently being offered at listed stores, as

well as a forum for discussion.

Although free to be listed and to post comments attached to reviews, stores may pay to join the

ResellerRatings Merchant Member program regardless of the merchants' rating. Exact fees are no

longer disclosed publicly and vary by merchant. Merchant Members can, among other things,

receive notifications and detailed information about new reviews, view order numbers attached to

reviews, contact reviewers/customers to resolve issues, use the ResellerRatings Checkout Exit
