This preconference event is a hands-on, once in a blue moon event with both Dr. Barnard and Dr. Kohl together for a one day and evening to discuss the nuts and bolts of agricultural finance and business management. This is a special opportunity for both lenders and producers to sharpen their skill set concerning financial principles in today’s challenging but opportunistic environment.

YOUNG FARMERS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND

The sessions will specifically address:

• How the balance sheet and income statement can give you better reads on financial and management performance.

• The golden rules of management and finance that sets apart the performing businesses.

• The latest credit and financial analysis benchmarks to measure business success.• How to effectively grow the business by utilizing financial and management rules of

the road.

Participants will get to engage and discuss these matters with two of the leading agricultural finance economists that were founding members of the United States Farm Financial Standards Task Force.

This will be an interactive educational event with case studies, worksheets, and tool kits that can be taken back to the businesses or lending institutions.

This boot camp may be one of the last opportunities to learn from and engage these leaders of agricultural finance that have experienced many agricultural cycles during their careers.

10:00 a.m. Weather Riskin Agriculture: Predictive Analytics Dr. Eric Snodgrass, Atmospheric Science University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign Description: Rapidly changing technology is pushing the boundary of weather analysis and forecasting. What was once left to chance can now be analyzed and predicted, but understanding how to use these analyses and forecasts is crucial to incorporating these predictions into your operations plan. Weather volatility can turn a well-managed operation into a disaster in moments and a forecast of adverse weather can cause ag markets to trade limit up or down in a few hours. In this talk, we will learn about the tools that are used in weather prediction and we will discuss their accuracy and usefulness in your operation. We will focus on how weather has impacted US and global agricultural production in the past and apply this knowledge to future growing seasons. We will discuss high impact meteorological events like flood, hail, and straight-line winds, while also learning the causes of flash drought, prolonged drought, and excessive heat. Finally, this talk will include the latest long range weather outlooks for the US harvest in 2018 as well as a forecast for the 2018-19 growing season in South America.

1:00 p.m. Commodity Prices and Marketing Outlook: Trends Affecting your Bottom Line Richard Brock - Brock Associates Continued uncertainty in the domestic and global economies associated with input costs, developing nation demand, and government policies are shaking up the commodity markets. Richard Brock’s straight-forward analysis will help get lenders and producers on the same page as they manage risk and make operational and financial decisions. Mr. Brock’s up-to-date analysis of corn, soybean, and cotton price trends will provide a basis for decision making in the coming year.

David Kohl received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University. For 25 years, Kohl was Professor of Agricultural Finance and Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. Kohl is Professor Emeritus in the Agricultural and Applied Economics Department at Virginia Tech. Kohl has traveled almost 9 million miles throughout his professional career! He has conducted more than 6,000 workshops and seminars for agricultural groups such as bankers, Farm Credit, FSA, and regulators, as well as producer and agribusiness groups. He has published four books and over 1,500 articles on financial and business-related topics in jour-nals, extension, and other popular publications. Kohl regularly writes for

Corn and Soybean Digest, and other ag lending publications. Kohl has addressed the American Bankers Agricultural Conference for more than 35 consecutive years, and has appeared before numerous state bankers’ schools and conferences throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the world. He has also been one of the top rated instructors at the LSU and Colorado Graduate Schools of Banking, and is Chancellor of Farm Credit University, which has trained over 2,000 lenders using an online and face-to-face educational approach. As facilitator of the United States Farm Financial Standards Task Force and member of the Canadian Agricultural Financial Standards Task Force, Dr. Kohl was one of the leaders in establishing guidelines for the standardized reporting and analysis of agricultural producers’ financial information on a national and international basis. The Kohl Agribusiness Centre has been established in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech in honor of his long-term commitment to practical teaching, research, and extension. Kohl is currently President of AgriVisions, LLC, a knowledge-based consulting business providing cutting-edge programs to leading agricultural organizations worldwide. He is also a business coach and part owner of Homestead Creamery, a value added dairy business in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Freddie L. Barnard, Professor Emeritus of agricultural economics at Purdue University, is a native of Kentucky and received both a B.S. and M.S. in agricultural economics from the University of Kentucky. He received a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois. He retired June 30, 2017 after serving on the faculty at Purdue University for more than 35 years, where he had Extension and undergraduate teaching responsibilities in agricultural finance and agribusiness management. He also served as director of the Midwest Agricultural Banking School, which is held each year through Purdue University, a position he held for 36 years. Finally, he served on the Technical Committee of the Farm Financial Standards Council and as secretary/treasurer of the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. Dr. Barnard

was the lead instructor for the Mid-South School of Advanced Agricultural Lending at UT Martin from 2013-2017.

Dr. Tim L. Cross, chancellor, previously served as Dean of University of Tennessee Extension. UT Extension is the agricultural, community and economic development, youth, and family and consumer outreach unit of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Appointed as Dean in July 2008, Dr. Cross has served the University of Tennessee as professor of agricultural economics beginning in 1994, developing and delivering educational programs concerning the economics of livestock manage-ment, animal waste management, forage production, and sustainable agriculture. Beginning in 2001, he served UT as Assistant Dean and then Associate Dean of Extension.An agricultural economist by training, Dr. Cross received his undergraduate

and graduate degrees at Oklahoma State University in 1980 and 1982, respectively, and served as an instructor of agricultural economics, marketing and policy at Fort Hayes State University before pursuing his doctoral degree at Oregon State University.

Eric Snodgrass is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Each year, he guides over 1500 students through the wild side of weather in ATMS 120: Severe and Hazardous Weather. He serves on numerous committees and boards on campus including the Illinois Teaching Advancement Board, Student Sustainability Committee and the Provost Task Force on Improving Large Enrollment Courses. Snodgrass’ research initiatives focus on K-12 science education as well as weather forecasting applications in financial markets.

Richard Brock is owner and president of Brock Associates, an agricultural marketing advisory service and publisher of The Brock Report, a 24 page weekly fundamental and technical newsletter. His firm manages grain sales on over 400,000 acres throughout the U.S. and is an advisor on purchasing strategies for many large poultry, pork, dairy and food com-panies. Brock is on retainer with several agri-business firms for his input on strategic planning. He writes a monthly column for two agriculture magazines and speaks at over 50 conventions and conferences per year. Brock grew up on the family grain and pork farm in central Indiana. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics from

Purdue University and his Master’s Degree from Cornell University. He lives in Milwaukee, WI and Destin, FL.
