Paraphrase Practice Example

I call God to witness that if I saw my country headed for ruin, I should not be afraid to speak out plainly; and I need hardly remind you that I would never have any dealings with an enemy of the people.

As God as my witness; I would never be afraid to do what’s right for my country. I don’t need to tell you that I’d never put others before my people.

Paraphrase Practice - You

• Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial: no man is to touch him or say the least prayer for him; he shall lie on the plain, unburied; and the birds and the scavenging dogs can do with him whatever they like.

Antigone – Scene 1 Recap

Scene one begins with Creon entering and addressing his men from the top step of the palace. He tells his men of his beliefs in burying Etecoles with military honors, and not burying Polyneices in shame of Polyneices being a traitor.

He tells them about how Polyneices has shamed his family by breaking exile and coming back and fighting against his own blood which has disgraced all of them.

The sentry then enters and tells the king about the body of Polyneices being buried. The king then becomes angry with the sentry and yells at him to bring him the man responsible for this.

The sentry then overwhelmed with the task leaves in fury but relief because his neck is still safe for the time being.
