Monthly Update – November 1st, 2017

Suncoast Mustang Club -Clearwater Florida

Kathy and I are glad to be back in Florida but we promise we didn’t bring the cold front from up north, in spite of what President Wayne thinks. In fact it rained out our Ft Walton Beach car show on Oct 28th on the Panhandle, put on by the Emerald Coast Mustang Club. Florida distances are huge! When we went west on I-10, Friday eve, the Garmin predicted a 6:50 pm arrival. Who was to know that was in the Central time zone! When we arrived at the show site Saturday a.m. in a light rain, we were told they decided to cancel. We can’t make their November 18th rain date because we are registered for Ponies under the Palms at Lakewood Ranch on November 19th. We were invited to join ECMC club members for an impromptu breakfast at IHOP. We are now on a first name basis with President Jeff Bryant, wife Patti and the show team. What a friendly bunch! After breakfast, most stayed to show us their rides. We are definitely going back for better weather next year, for the fellowship and to see more of that part of Florida. The dunes at the National Seashore are excellent as is the emerald green water! Hence the name of the club and that coastal section. See you at QS&L on the 2nd or at Currie Ford the 4th, or Bay Pines the 12th or Ponies under the Palms, on the 19th! You get the drift! We are keen to cruise!

The Prez sez….. To you the Boss…the club member. I am sure you are enjoying the cooler weather that is finally here. Thanks to Dave and Kathy for bringing it with them from Canada. November is going to be filled with lots of activity and everyone needs to pay attention, don't miss out. We got stuff planned before this month's club meeting! The board met 2 weeks ago and we talked about the following:

1. Elections for next year and election committee. 2. Christmas party cost $7.50 per person. 3. Charity Budget & operating budget. 4. Club Hats at $15.00 each. We ordered 35 5. March Car Show details and brochure

We have an event planned for Sunday Nov. 12th. A Breakfast and Car Show event. 7AM meet up at Village Inn Bay Pines and Veterans car show at 9AM across the street at Bay Pines VA Hospital. This event is sponsored by Tri-City Cruisers of Tampa Bay. 100% of all money will go to charity. Let's come out in honor of our Veterans. Nov 11th is Veterans Day and this is perfect timing for a car show. We have the Mustang Club of Tampa car show this Saturday Nov 4th at Bill Currie Ford. You can sign up on the Tampa club website. Cost is $25.00 and plan on being there. Another good show is on Nov 18th City of Largo Car & Truck Show. It is only $10.00 and proceeds go to support the Highlands Recreation scholarship fund for children. Details are at http://www.largo.com/egov/apps/events/calendar.egov?view=detail;id=16843 The November club meeting is Monday 13th. Please plan to attend. We will hold elections for our 2018 officers. Dave & Kathy Wilson are in charge of the election committee. Please contact them if you are interested in being a part of the club board or other offices. We will have Club hats available for purchase, bring your checkbook. We will also be signing up for the Christmas Party on Dec 2nd. Enjoy this month’s activities and the cooler weather. Let the pony out of the garage and take in a car show this month, there are plenty to choose from. Wayne Asbell President, Suncoast Mustang Club of FL

50th Anniversary Celebration-Joe & June Brend. Congratulations Joe & June- great to have you both in the club and so active. Bet no one else can say they went on their honeymoon in a Mustang and have the almost identical car today!

I don’t have room for all the pictures Joe posted but after the family 50th celebration they enjoyed a trip to the Smoky Mountains. We wish you many more years of the love and affection you show each other!

Suncoast Mustang Club September events: Club Meeting: Quaker Steak & Lube/ October 9th, 2017 Lots going on this month. We had two speakers; Melissa Reddington of Religious Charity Services (RCS) spoke of their organization which for 50 years has been helping the less fortunate and abused. This unique charity is peopled with workers from many faiths and is truly a multi-faith charitable organization. (At the Board of Directors Meeting later in the month $1500 was allocated in 3 lots of $500 to charity. The first allocation of $500 was made to RCS) The second speaker was from Dream Giveaway Charity. They raffle off several vehicles a year in pairs, eg a classic Mustang and a new Mustang, a classic Challenger and a new Hellcat, a classic Corvette and a new Corvette. Their raffle earnings allow them to help fund many charities which have a solid track record of service. This year they have a 1965 Mustang built by Classic Recreations in Yukon, OK and registered in the Shelby Worldwide Registry, and a 2017 GT350. The 1965 is rated at 670 HP. The 2017 has a 5.2l Voodoo engine and a Whipple Supercharger and is rated at 875 HP. The lucky winner receives $45,000 in addition to pay the taxes on the winnings.

See https://www.dreamgiveaway.com/dg/mustang for info and to buy tickets. Wayne also spoke about our past involvement with Biff Burger Toys for PinellasTots, and his concern that it might not happen this year. He later learned it is likely to continue. At a later in the month Board meeting $500 was allocated to this charity if it continues, leaving $500 for other charitable purposes. Wayne listed some future shows and reminded everyone about the Christmas Party on December 2nd.

BIFF Burger Mustang Monday, October 2nd – Biff Burger Monday continues to draw a large number of late model Mustangs and a few classics. Here are some pictures President Wayne sent me from the October 2nd get together. I’ve identified what cars I recognize as club member cars. The Dream Give-away folks were there with their current raffle car…the 1965 GT 350X. See October club meeting story above as President Wayne invited them to speak at our October 9th meeting at QS&L and tell us about the charities their ticket sales help!

Robert Ruggiero’s Fox Body Club Picnic-October 14 The day was perfect, the food was scrumptious, the fellowship was outstanding, the games were a blast and the Mustangs in the shelter lot …well they just outclassed the rides at the other shelters! About 20 members were out and we were especially pleased to see Ray and Charlotte Smith…and Charlotte looking so well after her lengthy illness. It is trite, but: “a good time was had by all!” Thanks to John and Denise Moody for organizing the event with help from Sherman and Jane Bliss!

Did I say: Scrumptious? Elections November 13th at our Regular Meeting at QS&L The club by-laws call for an election annually at the November Meeting. With that in mind, here is a partial 2018 candidate slate. Positions are still open till the meeting date. Acclamation is nice. An election of several candidates is even better! Contact Dave and Kathy Wilson, your election committee, if you wish to run ([email protected]). Some of our members head away for the summer months. If you want to ease into a position in the club maybe a position can be co-shared by a winter member and an all year member –e g-Connie O’Connor goes to the Carolinas for the summer months and would welcome a co-secretary when away. The color is iconic Highland Green like the famous ’68 fastback in the original movie. There is a faux “Bullit” gas cap and there are louvres. It features the 5.0 V8 and a 10 speed transmission. See: http://www.allfordmustangs.com/2017/10/05/2018-bullit-mustang-confirmed-windowsticker/

Ford GT Delivery process: With only 250 per year to be built over 3 years and a huge list of wannabe owners, few of us will see and fewer of us will own a Ford GT. Gary and Gail Oakley sent along this link showing the delivery process on the new Ford GT. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/enthusiasts/exclusive-see-what-it%E2%80%99s-like-to-get-your-fordgt-delivered/ar-AAsMbtz?li=BBisPVf&ocid=spartandhp Ford Announces 2018 Mustang Performance Pack Level 2-

PP2 is a $6500 option. Performance Pack Level 1 takes the GT up a notch. Level 2 positions it between the GT and the GT350. Ford announced on Oct 23rd that this package would be available for Manual transmission models only. The car will be ½ inch lower than PP Level 1, and springs and stabilizer bars are stiffened. Front springs stiffened by 20%; rear by 12%. Front stabilizer bars stiffened by 67%; rear by 12%. Cosmetically there will be black detailing on the front splitter and behind rear wheel wells plus 10 spoke wheels. Sounds like there is a performance level for every wallet in the 2018 Mustang build.

On the other side- some Mustang buyers care more about fuel economy. The table below compares Mustang fuel economy year over year.

32mpg in an ecoboost automatic on the highway and power (with subsequent drop in fuel economy) on demand is where new cars including Mustang are going. As for me- I’ll take 15-25-18 in a GT manual! “Built Ford Tough with military grade aluminum” so the commercials say. Well, the steel based competitors didn’t match the F150 rating! I guess the testers didn’t do a lame test of a tool box dropped from on high into the bed! LOL Equipped with Emergency Braking System and Emergency Collision Warning System, the crew cab and extended cab versions got high marks. The only criticism was to do with headlight effectiveness. Yet users have found them to be plenty bright enough. Ford engineering with the effective use of crumple zones was cited as a feature. I came to this country at the age of 8 from Holland and was a registered permanent resident alien till I became a citizen in ’79. New Jersey was my home until ’97 when I moved to Brandon with my wife and daughter. I worked in Tampa as the Fiscal Director for the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging. I retired as a Controller for a Goodwill chain and live in Pinellas Park with my wife and her

daughter. First I will list all the cars I have owned to now:

57 Bellaire straight 6 auto, 60 Chevy Bellaire 6 auto, 62 Rambler 6 3spd on the column, 68 Karman Ghia 4 on the floor, 72 Capri V6 4spd, 77 Capri Hatchback 4sp on the floor, 88 Mustang GT 5spd, 2004 Hyundai Sonata, 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track, 2017 Mustang GT auto.

The mods on my 88 Mustang (see picture) were: 347 stroker motor, long tube headers, Vortech T Trim

supercharger (10lb boost), intercooler, Koni shocks coilovers, 16” 5 star wheels with Nitto drag radials, aluminum drive shaft, with safety loop, stock Mustang clear rear taillight lenses, Hurst shifter with Built AOD, 1500 stall converter, Aluminum flywheel, etc. The car had a true 450hp/450tq to the wheels and ran in the low 11’s.

My new 2017 Mustang GT has Air Aid cold air intake, Magna Flow cat back street exhaust, a Bama X tune for 89 and 93 octane. A reasonable boost in power adding 35hp/35tq to the wheels. I also had installed an adjustable Koni/Eibach 1” lowering kit in addition to Eibach front and rear sway bars. Maximum Motorsport front adjustable camber plates. The real difference in road feel and tighter suspension was the Steeda reach chassis brace. The car now handles like a true sports car taking corners on rails and no dive when braking. My 88 had 200K miles I estimated because I replaced the speedometer at the 160,000 mile mark and ran her 6 more years till I sold her in 2004. It was a one owner car as I bought it new in ’88.
