An Introduction to Leadership ReproductionWhy reproducing leadership at the Vineyard is such a high priority.

I. The Leadership Problem

Exodus 18:7-27 (partial text)13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that Moses wasdoing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will. 16 Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and laws.”17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”

II. The Importance of Reproducing Ministry

Ephesians 4:11-1611 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, sothat the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

A. One of the most important aspects of leadership is the ability to identify and recruit leaders and a work force to carry out the work of the ministry. This ability is the principle missing link in the non-growing church today.

B. It’s a key to healthy growth: You can only grow (both in numbers and in spiritual maturity) as your leadership capacity expands.

C. It is easy to get bogged down in meeting needs directly. In the long run, the most effective way for us to meet the needs of our people is to equip more and more people for leadership and ministry.

D. We must make this a priority!

III. We have examined the reasons that some of our ministry efforts were unsuccessful. The number one reason is the leader’s inability to:

• Identify,

• Recruit,

• Train,

• Deploy,

• Monitor, and

• Nurture people into the ministry of the church

Identifying LeadershipWe are working from the premise that we cannot make someone into a leader. We can only find them, learn to identify what God is already doing in a person’s life and encourage them to continue to become all he wants them to become.

I. The meaning of Leadership:

A. Leaders are people who serve others

B. Leaders are people who have authority over others and are responsible for guiding their actions

C. Leadership is the ability to personally influence people to accomplish specific tasks

II. Leaders are Servants

A. New Testament leadership is not about flashy public relations and platform personalities, but about humble service. The work of God is to be carried on by spiritual power, not personal magnetism, as Paul clearly pointed out in 1 Corinthians 1:26-31. Some leaders may serve by teaching the word and other by serving tables, but all leaders serve.

B. Christ’s teaching (after washing the disciples’ feet) is indisputably clear: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). Paul taught, “Your attitude should be that same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:5-7)

III. Some Characteristics of Servant Leadership

A. Servant leaders will not intrude themselves between an individual and God.

B. Servant leaders seek to promote the whole, not just their part of the ministry.

C. Servant leaders have a passionate desire to understand the hurts, desires, temptations, sins, joys, and real needs of people.

D. Servant leaders are God-centered and others-centered, not self-centered.

E. Servant leaders are models for the church. The New Testament repeatedly advises leaders to “set an example for the others in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). No gifts or abilities can make up for a lifestyle that betrays one’s call and profession. One’s character and role are blended inseparably in ministry.

F. Servant leaders develop others to lead rather than do all the ministry themselves.

G. Servant leaders lead out of relationship, not out of coercion or manipulation.

VI. Some Guidelines in Identifying Leaders

A. Notice who is naturally leading

B. Listen to and observe what people like to do

C. Distinguish between genuinely interested people and opportunists

D. Be objective! Don’t be over or under-whelmed by a person’s giftedness, appearance, education, or background

E. Build a genuine relationship with them

Recruiting LeadershipAs we recruit, we are inviting people to participate with what God is doing in a larger context of our community and to exercise their developing gifts of leadership.

I. Why Recruit?

A. God recruits. Throughout the scriptures, God went after men and women (Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Prophets, etc.)

B. Jesus recruited the twelve: “Follow me!” He called them to himself and to serve (Matthew 4:18-21)

C. We are all called to serve

1. To be a member of the Vineyard is to participate somewhere as a servant

2. People are healed as they serve

D. As leaders, we are called to equip others to serve (Ephesians 4:10, Matthew 9:35-38).

II. How Not to Recruit the Next Leader

A. Volunteerism in not the same as leadership

B. A blanket sales approach will not locate leaders

C. Many try to avoid finding a leader by trying to make one

III. How to Recruit

A. Selection must depend on initiation of God

1. 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

2. Luke 6:12-13 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles.

3. Mark 1:16-17 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

B. Recruitment is an invitation to participate, not a promise of position

C. Recruitment consists of letting people know the vision, goals, and plans

D. Recruiting is matching those called by God to the job God has called them to do

Training and Modeling LeadershipWe believe that training occurs best over a period of time in an atmosphere of supportive relationship utilizing the model Jesus gave us in training the first disciples.

I. Training occurs over a period of time

A. Both information and transformation are necessary in developing a leader

B. Focus of training/equipping the workers and leaders is to help them become informed, articulate and skilled in their ministry areas

C. Three main vehicles for training:

1. Formal –

II. Training Occurs in the Right Climate

A. The Example of Jesus

1. Luke 9:28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.

2. Luke 9:43b While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44“Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you:

3. Luke 10:23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately,

4. Luke 11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

5. Luke 18:31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.

6. John 13:12-17 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked

them. 13“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

B. Relationship is an absolute key

III. The Five-Fold Discipleship Loop

A. Step 1 – The leader does the ministry

1. They must see the behavior in you first before you will see it in them

B. Step 2 – The leader does the ministry while the apprentice observes

1. The apprentice should be asking “why do you do that this way.” If they don’t ask look for opportunities to just tell them why we do what we do

2. This is simple show and tell. Exposure and experience should precede information (training comes before education). Formalizing ministry should follow after familiarization with ministry

C. Step 3 – The leader and the apprentice do the ministry together

1. This is grabbing the knob and turning up the heat - “why don’t you pray” or “why don’t you lead discussion next week”

2. Step two will usually take some cheerleading – You will commonly hear, “I can’t do that…gulp”

3. This is the first place trust and relationship will be tested. You may need more of both before they are able to take risk

4. Pray for God to equip them with what they need

5. Afterward, discuss what happened, pray for them. Their faith will be stretched, and they will grow and mature even if they fail – be encouraging

D. Step 4 – Apprentice does, leader not around, apprentice reports back, discuss

1. Exactly same process without safety net of leader there, more risk, more heat

2. Cheerlead, prepare and equip, set them up for success, pray for them to be filled with what they need

3. Think back to what you wished you would have known when you were where they are

4. Have them report back, discuss – Teach them to evaluate themselves “What could have been better”, pray for them

E. Step 5 – Apprentice is released and begins to train their own apprentice

1. This is more heat; often they feel like they are not ready for this either. Did you feel ready for leadership?

2. Coach them through this – help set this up, tell them what to do, how to do it

IV. Helpful Training Tips

A. Follow this process with everything you do as a leader

B. Teach them to depend on Jesus through whole process– you don’t want them to depend on you. If things go well they’ll thank you, if things go bad they’ll blame you

C. Don’t give away position until they have been tested and approved

D. Always share an accurate vision of the new position

Releasing and Sending LeadershipNew leaders need to exercise their leadership in order to continue to grow. We want to follow Jesus’ example and release leaders so that the church can be healthy.

I. The Example of Jesus sending out leaders

A. After intimacy came enablement and empowerment

1. The disciples were selected by Jesus, shown how to minister, and then sent out

Matthew 10:1-15 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts; 10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.11 "Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake thedust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

2. He told them where to go, what to preach, what to do, how to travel and what to expect

3. This is the beginning of cutting the umbilical cord. They are on their own for a short period of time. They have to succeed or fail. Either is okay!

B. Deployment has to do with administration and placement of people to carry out the task or goal

1. The new worker/leader must have a clear idea of their calling and gifts

2. Each new leader must receive a clear and complete description of expectations and responsibilities

3. The new leader must know what they can legitimately expect from their overseer so unmet expectations don’t lead to resentment and bitterness

4. Reporting relationships must be clearly defined. The new leader must know who

is “over” them and accept a limited relationship with the Senior Pastor

5. Ongoing training, reading, listening, ministry trips, etc., need to be an understood aspect of service deployment

6. Continue to give feedback as you work with your leaders through the training phases

C. You must be committed to the success of those you delegate and deploy

1. Involves a commitment to pray for them

John 17:6-17 I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the nameyou gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.13“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

Monitoring and Nurturing LeadershipLeadership continues to grow in a supportive, nurturing environment where leaders are responsible for both their failures and successes.

I. God is our Example of Nurturing

A. God initiates nurture

Isaiah 27:2-3 In that day—"Sing about a fruitful vineyard: 3 I, the LORD, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.

B. The Example of Jesus nurturing His disciples

Luke 9:10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,Luke 10:1-2017 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." 18 He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I havegiven you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

1. Jesus made time for them

2. He rejoiced in what they accomplished

3. His giving of time was one way of saying, “Thank you”

C. Nurturing has to do with genuine friendship, with giving value to and meeting their personal needs through counsel and prayer

II. Responsibility and accountability are inseparable twins

A. Evaluation and feedback must continue

B. All new leaders/workers need to feel appreciated and part of the team

C. They need to see how their efforts fit into the larger scheme of things

D. Monthly or agreed-upon meetings and other contacts are essential

1. Personal needs addressed

2. Performance evaluated—Catch them doing something right!

III. Ten Ways to Build up New Leaders

A. Accentuate the positive

B. Be liberal with praise

C. Compliment them frequently, sincerely and in public

D. Greet them using their names

E. Take note of their hobbies and special interests

F. Work on your own self image—you can’t encourage them if you don’t believe in yourself

G. Give credit where credit is due—don’t steal their thunder

H. Ask, “How can I help?”

I. Give appropriate challenges—people get bored when not challenged

J. Listen! Listen! Listen!

IV. Ten Ways to Destroy New Leaders

A. Underestimate their potential

B. Remove their reward

C. Show a lack of confidence in them

D. Expect immediate results

E. Don’t support them

F. Magnify their mistakes

G. Ignore their successes

H. Underestimate the role they play

I. Treat the task as if it’s more important than they are
