The Microsoft SunPod®: a solar charging station & Wi-Fi
hotspot to support Nepal earthquake recovery
Tuesday, September 15th, 2015
Microsoft Innovation Center has offered a Microsoft SunPod® to the Nepalese
population, following the earthquake. Designed by the French cleantech company
Advansolar, the station which runs only on solar power, is used to charge the batteries
of mobile phones, torch lights, and connect to Wi-Fi to make free Skype calls. Four
months after the disaster, this project still represents an essential humanitarian aid.
The 21st century’s phone booth
This SunPod® is a robust and weatherproof “Outdoor” model. 100% self-sustaining, and
mounted to the colors of Microsoft, the station charges up to 8 devices at the same time, and
remains in service 24/7. Since June 25th, the charging booth has been placed on the football
ground in Jawalakhel, and almost 60 people have been using it each day. According to Suvasini
Shrestha, Public Relations Manager for Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) Nepal, the SunPod®
is available for communities in other areas as well.
Shrestha says, "We plan to take the SunPod from one area to another to serve various
communities who have been hardest hit by the earthquake. We stationed the SunPod in
Jawalakhel because there are still over 300 people living there in tents, with majority of them
handicapped and on wheelchairs. So we thought it would be very helpful for them. There is no
time limit to the calls they want to make and anyone who has been affected by the earthquake
and has no proper shelter is welcome to make use of these services." After providing free
Skype call services to around 500 earthquake victims in Kathmandu, Dhulikhel, Lalitpur and
Bhaktapur, MIC Nepal is now offering a Microsoft SunPod® to help people in need.
