Winter is now over and so now we must
watch for the hazards to our dogs of Spring.
As always, as owners we must be ever vigi-
lant in ensuring our dogs are healthy and
safe in their environment. It is pleasing to
see the amount of members turning out for
training and hopefully, with warmer weath-
er approaching, this number will increase.
The notice of the 56th AGM of the
GSDCSA is contained in this edition of the
Shepherd News which will be held on Fri-
day 21 November in the club rooms with
nominations being called for Committee
positions. If any member is interested in
assisting the club by way of holding a
position on committee and would like
further information, please come and see
me as I am happy to discuss.
Finally, a speedy recovery to those
members who are unwell at present,
including my wife, Jenny who is recovering
from surgery.

Presidents Report– John De Lucia
This is now the second edition of the Shepherd
News produced via our club website.
Judging by the feedback received, the first
edition was well received and whilst I
understand that it does take a little getting
used to, the quality of the News, ease of
production by the Editor and production costs,
certainly have helped the club. We could not have asked for a better day in
terms of the weather for the 50th Anniversary
of the Annual Balmead Shield Trial. Whilst we
did not retain the shield, well done to our club
members who represented the competing
team and thank you to the trainers for their
efforts. The day was made special due to the
dedication shown by club members in offering
their help and assistance on the day and on
behalf of the club, I thank you all. The Royal Adelaide Show has been and gone
for another year with the German Shepherds
competing on Wednesday 10 September. I
was able to attend on this day and can safely
say that the small contingent of members who
competed had an enjoyable day. The Show can
be a little draining in terms of having to be
„benched‟ all day however, it is good for
members of the public to see the breed being
showcased.

Spring is upon s and so is the warmer weather, I am certainly enjoying
more time outside with the dogs. I have also been busy clearing up to avoid
providing hiding spot for snakes. There are some great pages on Facebook–
I have found that they provide some useful information about things to look
out for, here is a link as an example-

“But how could you part with him? Poor dog, don‟t you love him?” The idea of rehoming a beloved puppy or dog seems incomprehensible to most people. We have it drilled into us that a dog is a
commitment not to be taken lightly, they‟re not disposable items and „A dog is for life, not just Christmas‟. However, rehoming dogs
is one of the least enjoyable, yet necessary part of being a breeder or show exhibitor.
Does this mean that breeders and exhibitors don‟t love their dogs? Absolutely not. Puppies retained for the purpose of showing
and future breeding are raised with as much love and care as those puppies placed in pet homes. These puppies are usually highly
socialised with dogs and people as they are taken to dog club from a young age, are well handled from time spent show training and
being exhibited and also well accustomed to travelling. An abundance of time, money and energy is put in to having a litter and much
hope is placed on the little puppy that stays as the future of the bloodlines. At times however, things don‟t work out as planned. There are limited attributes that you can be sure of in an 8 week old puppy
and the vision then does not always equate to what you get in an adult dog. During the earlier stages of puppy hood, disqualifying
faults (for both showing and breeding) such as missing teeth and ear issues (soft ears which don‟t stand, or are not firm enough) can
pop up. Hip and elbow x-rays can‟t be taken until the dog has done the critical part of its growing so are done after 12 months of
age. Our scheme for hips and elbows is very strict and for good reason, we have done much to improve the health of our breed in
this area. The majority of the dogs who are x-rayed and scored do pass, but on occasion there are dogs whose scores, whilst not
detrimental to the dog in any way, will not be low enough for future breeding. Height is another factor which is largely unknown
until the dog is around the 12 month of age mark. It may seem strange that a few centimetres over or under the ideal set out in the
breed standard can be so important, but the breed standard is the blueprint for the German Shepherd and what we aim for when
breeding.
After being shown through puppyhood, passing x-rays and being breed surveyed, the next step for dogs retained by breeders is
producing a litter. In most cases dogs are around 2 years old age when they are bred from. For the most part, this is a straight
forward process however dogs can also suffer from issues with fertility, birthing (resulting in caesareans) and at times poor
mothering skills which can deem them unsuitable for future breeding. Dogs of around 3 or 4 years old, who have completed their
role of producing a litter or two for their breeders, are sometimes rehomed. As German Shepherd dogs are often slow maturing, these dogs are still young at heart and playful with plenty of years of love and companionship to offer to a family. Often breeders
breed a litter with the goal of producing a puppy to continue on with as the next generation, and if such a puppy is born in a bitch‟s
first litter, she may not be bred again.
It‟s also import to acknowledge influences from other sources when the decision is made to rehome a puppy or dog. It could be as
simple as the breeder having bred a better quality puppy from the same mother in her next litter. Sometimes despite having a really
promising puppy, external factors such as problems with the bloodlines showing up in littermates or dogs from similar breeding,
means that it is no longer wise to continue with that puppy. There are dogs who do not enjoy living in a multi-dog household or the
hustle and bustle of travelling and being in the show ring (the same can be true for competition obedience or dog sports) – being
forced into activities or a lifestyle that doesn‟t suit makes for an unhappy dog and owner. If the decision is made to part with a dog or puppy, it is done so with the dog‟s best interests in mind. It would be lovely if these
dogs that haven‟t made the grade for whatever reason could all stay with their breeder/owner as a pet, but in reality it‟s not that
simple. Breeders generally have multi dog households consisting of up and coming youngsters, show dogs and breeding dogs and
more often than not, a retired and much treasured oldie or two. These dogs are all pet dogs in addition to their other roles in the
kennels and a routine of training, fitness, travel etc is planned around them. A dog who doesn‟t have a role can often get left behind due to time constraints and the logistics of being able to fit only a limited
number of dogs in the house, car, bed! etc. In this situation it‟s far better for the dog to be placed in a household with its very own
family where it can receive more attention and be included. The reality of a dog left at home in a run on its own is a far sadder
thought than having to part with them. No one likes saying goodbye to their friend, even breeders who have been doing it for years.
It‟s especially hard when it‟s a puppy you have raised yourself, who has been yours its entire life. It‟s not easy. When you have found
a home that is just right for the dog, where you know in your heart they will be well cared for and happy, and you know it is in their
best interests not your selfish own, you can get through it. What does the dog think about all this? In this situation it‟s important to remember that dogs are not furry four footed humans like
we sometimes think of them, they are dogs and they are not capable of the same thought processes that we are. They do not think
they have been abandoned, or wonder what they have done wrong or think they are unloved. They don‟t think that way. Dogs live
in the moment, and while initially they will be confused about their new surroundings and the new people in their lives, before too
long, with kindness, encouragement (and food!) they will adjust and be happy in their new environment.
Remember, our greatest consideration should always be what is best for the puppy/dog!
Sia
Sia was bred by us and we had great fun showing her for 18 months – her big personality meant she was always entertaining! She
was rehomed to Jason and his family in Bannockburn just before her 2nd birthday as we decided not to continue on with that partic-
ular bloodline (though through no fault with Sia herself) Her playful nature suggested to me that she would enjoy a family with chil-
dren and this has proven very true

Sia competing in the show ring, handled by Hayley in 2012
Sia in 2014 at home with Cooper
From Jason;
It was important to first meet Sia with Vanessa and Hayley to see her personality. Even though Sia was extremely playful I was
comfortable that she would adapt to family life with 2 kids. The most invaluable part of the process was Sia being delivered to
our home by Vanessa and Hayley as they bought some items that Sia loved. I feel that this made Sia more comfortable with the
idea of moving into a new family. Sia only took a short while to get use to our 3 and 6 year old kids and now the kids adore her
as well as going to the local GSD club in Geelong and doing obedience as well as being asked to be involved in the demo for the
club on 2 occasions. All in all it was an extremely smooth process thanks to the advice and ideas of Vanessa and Hayley with the
key being asking as many questions as possible to get the best outcome for all. I would highly recommend taking on a rehomed
dog from a breeder.
Termi Termi was one of my favourite puppies, very easy to live with and very hard to part with. She was my shadow and constant com-
panion at home; however she did not enjoy the show ring or social trips out. As I spend a lot of time travelling and out at train-
ing with my dogs, this meant in fairness to Termi our lifestyles were not compatible. Termi was 3 years old when she went to
live with Anne and Stephen in Apollo Bay, and they allowed her to come back for a litter in 2012 before she was spayed. Having
someone home at most times, as well as being spoilt rotten, means she‟s now immensely happy with her new life.
Termi with her puppies in 2012 Termi with Bella at her new home in 2013
From Anne; After we lost our male GSD, we were incredibly lucky to be offered Termi, a 3yo bitch, who had had 1 litter and is the 1/2 sister
of our ratbag Bella. Termi came for a visit first and quickly reconnected with Bella and proceeded to win our hearts - saying
goodbye to her that day was very hard and I didn't think my husband was going to let her go. A few weeks later, when Termi
came for good, she was a little confused when Vanessa left without her, but settled in very quickly and was happily playing, eating
and sleeping that day. The joy of homing an older dog is easy to express - even though you have missed out on the floppy ears
and small enough to (easily) pop on your lap, you have also missed the chewing, crate training, house training stages and you can
easily assess the character of the dog. As we both work full time, a puppy was not an option, but as Termi was so well trained
and her nature already formed and clear for all to see, she was a very easy and amazing addition to our family. She calms Bella
down, she plays like a mad thing and gives so much love to us - she also clearly remembers Vanessa and Hayley when they visit,
but knows that this is her home and no longer wants to go back in the car with them. A fantastic outcome for us and for Termi -
would I do it again? In a heartbeat!

The GSDC of S A Inc. under clause 6, and relative by-laws of the Clubs Constitution.
Any dog which is sick WILL NOT be permitted onto the Club grounds. Dogs who have suffered a CONTAGIOUS DISEASE WILL NOT be allowed on to the grounds until 5 weeks after being cleared by a veterinarian (a vets certificate may be re-quired). Puppies should not be brought out onto the Club grounds under the age of 8 weeks or at least 2 weeks after they have been inoculated for HEPATITIS, DISTEMPER
AND PARVOVIRUS ( vaccination certificate may be required).
Bitches in season are not permitted on the grounds unless at a recognised Club event. The use of switches, spiked collars or whips is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN ON THE CLUB
GROUNDS.
Members shall not treat their dog in a manner which may reflect badly on the Club. Dogs are NOT to be taken off-lead or left unattended, except on the directives, or under the
supervision of a Class Instructor. The handlers of dogs which foul the Club grounds, will be responsible for cleaning up
same, with the equipment provided. The Head Instructor has the authority to permit the use of a muzzle or training devices, as required in special cases. The use of the equipment is to be under supervision, and its use
on the grounds, other than above, is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Dogs under the age of 12 months ARE NOT permitted to use jump equipment higher than
400 mm, or longer than 800 mm. Pursuant of the Health act "Dogs" ARE NOT permitted inside the Clubrooms. In the interest of safety and health, and in consideration of others, parents are required to super-vise the behaviour of their children. The Clubrooms and Toilets MUST NOT be used
as playing areas. In the interests of public health the Clubrooms and the verandah area are NON-SMOKING
areas. TRAINING HEAT POLICY If the forecast temperature is predicted to be 38 degrees or above on channel 9 weather at 6pm the night before training, (Wednesday nights or Sun-
day’s), all training will be cancelled. Appropriate foot wear must be worn at ALL times when handling / double handling dogs on the Club grounds. Bare feet, thongs, slip on shoes, high heels, sandals or crocs are not suitable foot wear and members wearing any of the above will be asked to leave the
training area. THANK YOU! BE PROUD OF YOUR DOG, HE IS VERY PROUD OF
