What is a Software License?
• A software license is the legal right to install, use, access, display,
run, or otherwise interact with a software program.
• The license agreement defines the way in which software can be
used. Customers are required to agree to the terms of the license
agreement in order to legally use the software.
When customers acquire and install new software:
• They are often asked to read and accept the End User License
Agreement (EULA) or Product Use Rights (PUR) that governs their
rights over the software.
• They may require a software license for each individual computer
or device on which the software is installed.
Perpetual vs. Non-Perpetual License
Perpetual Licenses – Everlasting licenses
– Valid if the software is being used in accordance with the EULA
requirements
– Generally available when acquiring software from a local computer store
or from an OEM
Non-Perpetual Licenses
– Temporary licenses
– Provide a time-limited right to use a particular product until a specific
end-date
– Are only available through certain Comprehensive Programs
Different Microsoft Software Licenses
• Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
• Full Packaged Product (FPP)
• Volume Licensing Agreements – Open License
– Select Plus
– Enterprise Agreement
