Fixed Kanban and WMS Integration

INTRODUCTION

This demo script shows how Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 supports fixed quantity production

kanban and integration with warehouse management (WMS). It aims at providing an overview of

how to create fixed kanban and how kanban is integrated with WMS.

AUDIENCE

The demo script should be used to demonstrate the value of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

R3 to a business decision maker (BDM). The executives that you present to will find value in

this script if they are challenged with:

This demo scenario addresses the first step of a two-step production process. The first step is a

simple lean production flow with a single process activity. Two components from a raw material

warehouse are staged in pallets of 100 at the input location of the work cell 5101. For each

kanban job, 20 pieces are picked.

Creating waves for warehouse work when kanban jobs are planned, processing the waves,

and registering the work on the WMS Scanner interface.

This demo script shows how Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 can help address pain points that

business users of a business application might experience:

DEMO PRESET CONFIGURATION

This demo script is written to support the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 virtual machine image

(VM). To run this demonstration, ensure that the VM is up and running and that you have logged

on as the system administrator.


BEFORE YOU BEGIN

1. Check the default work cell for

the kanban schedule board

and make sure that the board

is opened on the actual client

session:

Production control >

Common > Lean

manufacturing > Kanban

schedule board

2. Select work cell 5101 and click

OK.

If another work cell,

which is not 5101, has

been selected, use View

> Change work cell.

If the board has never been opened

on this client session, the work cell

selector will show.

Select work cell 5101, then click OK.

3. Check the default work cell for

the kanban schedule board

and make sure that the board

is opened on the actual client

session:

If the board has never

been opened on the

current client, the work

cell selector will show.

If the board has been

opened, but for the wrong

work cell, click Close cell to

open the selector for the

work cell. Then close the

board.

Check the on-hand of the

material needed for this process

in warehouse 51.

4. M9200 has two LPs of 100

each in the warehouse:

LP92001 and LP92002



LP92011 and LP92012



LP92021 and LP92022

This can be done with an

inventory adjustment journal.


DEMO 1 : PICKING FOR KANBAN

Open the kanban scheduling board to plan the first two kanbans for the actual day:


1. Go to USMF >


Common > Lean

manufacturing >

Kanban schedule board.

2. Select the first two kanban

jobs and drag them to the

first period.


Result: Two kanbans are

planned and the related waves

are created and processed.

3. Show the waves are

created per kanban and

the work allocated to this,

and write down the work

for the next steps to use

the scanner:

USMF > Warehouse

management >

Common > Waves >

Kanban waves > All

kanban waves

Now that the waves are created and processed, you can start picking kanbans in the

warehouse by using the Mobile Device Interface.


4. Open the Mobile device screen

and log on with credentials User

ID 51, Password 1.

5. Navigate to the Main Menu and

Select Production.


6. Select Kanban picking.

7. Scan the Work ID of the first

kanban and click OK.

8. Scan the first license plate

LP92001 for item M9200 and

click OK.

Note: as all material is picked with

one work, the first material license

plate is used to represent all material

for the putaway.


9. Scan the license plate LP92011

for Item M9201 and click OK.

10. Scan the license plate LP92021

for Item M9202 and click OK.


11. A Put instruction appears.

Click OK to confirm.

Work is completed.

Click Cancel to return to the

menu.

12. Go to Warehouse

management > Common >

Work > All work, and select

Show closed work.

In the work form, you can verify that

the work instructions are now

closed. You can also see that the

work created for the

second kanban is canceled. This

happens because the full quantity of

the license plate has been moved

and all related kanban work has

been updated.


13. Open the Kanban board for

process jobs and show that

both kanbans now have

material available.

14. Open the Update picking list

form to see that all material

transactions are updated to

Picked.

15. Close the picking form and

prepare, start, and complete the

two jobs on the kanban process

board.


16. Select a third unplanned kanban

from the kanban process board.

17. Click Plan, for a wave to be

created, but no work is needed,

as there is enough available on-

hand at the input locations.

Observe that the material shows

as available in the picking list.

18. Open the Update picking list

form to show that material has

been updated to Picked.

DEMO 2 : RECEIVING AND PUTAWAY FOR KANBAN

Next, the functionality of kanban putaway is explained.

Scenario:

Some components L0100 should also be transferred to the distribution center in site 6

because they are also sold as spare parts to customers. Full kanbans that are transferred to

the floor locations in site 5 from where they are picked will be transferred to site 6 with

transfer orders.

In this case, the kanban can be received directly on the Warehouse scanner menu. The


putaway automatically selects a location with location profile FLOOR-05.

1. Select the Kanban receipt and

putaway from the Mobile

device menu.

Note: Do NOT use option 4:

Kanban receipt. This leaves the

work unfinished.

2. Scan the Kanban Card ID.

3. Search the kanban card on the

kanban board.

Note that both references,

Kanban ID and Kanban Card ID

will work in this step, however,

on the default kanban card, only

the Card ID is printed in

barcode.


Enter the kanban card ID in the

kanban field and return. Note that it

recognizes that the reference is a

card number.

1. Enter the quantity 20.

Assign a License plate.

Note: On the license plates in

connection with Kanban:

It would be logical to use the

Kanban card ID as the license plates.

However, the License plate in

warehouse management is unique

and can only be used once. If you

want to use the kanban card number

as license plate, you need to make

sure that the number sequences for

Kanban cards are unique within the

license plates and you cannot use

circulating cards.


2. Confirm the Put action and

assign a License plate.

3. Observe the completed work.

Click Cancel to return to the

menu.


Verify in the kanban details form

that the kanban is completed.

Check the on-hand: The kanban has

been received to the finished

location LP-001.


CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this demo script has guided you through a scenario for material

staging for kanban production in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3. The script takes

you through the following:

2. Creating wave and work for fixed kanban production
