Welcome to microrad 2018 in cambridge!On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee and the Steering Committee, I welcome you to the 15th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad 2018) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MicroRad 2018 is sponsored by the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Center for Microwave Remote Sensing (CeTeM) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MicroRad meetings are held biennially and this year it is held on the MIT campus. MicroRad 2018 remains a premier international forum for reporting on recent achievements in instrumentation and scientific applications of radiometry to Earth System science.

A unique feature of MicroRad meetings is that there is a single stream of oral and poster sessions, i.e. there are no parallel sessions. This format allows the audience to participate in the entire selection of presentations. This year we received 126 abstracts which were peer-reviewed and the accepted abstracts are organized into 19 sessions. Two-thirds of the abstracts fit in oral sessions over four days and one-third are posters organized in two sessions. At the beginning each poster session, the posters in that session are briefly introduced by the authors.

Authors may submit full papers for inclusion in the meeting proceedings through MicroRad2018.org. To be included in the proceedings, the papers must be prepared following the specified format and uploaded by April 15, 2018.

Additionally, the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS) has agreed to publish a special issue including MicroRad 2018. Special editors (Sidarth Misra from JPL, Juha Lemmetyinen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute and I) will send submitted manuscripts for peer review. The deadline for submitting manuscripts for review and possible inclusion in the JSTARS special issue including MicroRad 2018 is August 5, 2018.

I thank the organizers of past MicroRad meetings for passing on their experiences. Their advice was very helpful in organizing this meeting. The Local Organizing Committee worked together to assemble a technical program worthy of long distance travel to see and hear. I am grateful to Conference Management Services (CMS, Inc.) for superb support of the program organization. It is always a pleasure to work with them.

tranSportation

From/to boSton logan international airport

Boston Logan International Airport is on an island in Boston Harbor. It is close to the cities of Cambridge and Boston (about six to ten kilometers) and well connected by public transportation. There is a under-water tunnel fee toll and charges for automobiles in and out of the airport perimeter. Despite the short distance, the taxi and Uber/Lyft fares reflect these additional surcharges.

by taxi:

Taxi fare from the airport is about $35–$40. During non-rush hour, the taxi ride will take about 15 minutes. During rush hour, the ride could take 30 minutes or more.

by uber/lyFt:

Uber and Lyft can pickup and drop off passengers from Boston Logan International Airport. You can be picked up in areas designated for such services. The designated pick up areas are all located on the lower level (Arrivals) at the airport. All designated pick up areas are signed “App Ride/TNC.” Upon departure from Boston, you can be dropped off at the terminal. The one-way fare between Boston Logan International Airport and Cambridge is an estimated $18 to $22.

by SubWay:

From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). Under normal conditions the ride will take about one-half hour and the fare is $2.75(Charlie Card) or cash. Charlie Tickets can be purchased at all subway “T” stops.

by car:

You may rent automobiles at the Logan Airport Rental Center. Rental cars are not recommended since the airport, MIT and Cambridge are well-served by public transportation. Also parking is expensive and often-times limited in availability. If you do choose to rent an automobile, the driving directions from the airport to MIT is: Leaving the airport, follow the signs to the Sumner Tunnel. Enter the tunnel and stay in the right lane. At the end of the tunnel, continue to stay in the right lane, start down an incline and bear to the right immediately at the sign for Storrow Drive. Take Exit 26 for Cambridge/Somerville. Follow the signs for Back Bay/Cambridge (do not take the exit for Cambridge/Somerville). Stay in the right lane and follow the signs for Storrow Drive Westbound. After you pass under the pedestrian walkbridges, change to the left lane and take the exit on your left for 2A North. Turn right onto the Harvard Bridge (Massachusetts Avenue). MIT’s main entrance is 77 Massachusetts Avenue, and it will be on the right at the second set of traffic lights. The conference venue is the Kirsch Kirsch Auditorium (MIT 32-123), Ray and Maria Stata Center, 32 Vassar Street, Cambridge. There is metered parking on Massachusetts Avenue for short stays and evenings/weekends, as well as a number of lots at which you may park for a fee. These include Vassar St. Public Parking at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street, University Park / Star Market Public Parking, and the Marriott Parking Garage on Ames St. and Broadway.

public tranSportation in cambridge and boSton Public transportation is either by subway (known as the “T”) or city buses.

The closest station to the MicroRad 2018 venue and Marriott Hotel Cambridge is the Red Line Kendall/MIT stop. Also Bus #1 Harvard/Dudley stops at the main entrance of MIT at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. The subway ride costs $2.75 (Charlie Ticket or cash) between any two stations. Day and weekly passes can also be purchased at all stations. The bus fare is $1.70 Charlie Ticket or cash (payable by bills and coins). Charlie Tickets can be purchased at all subway “T” stops.

Social dinner

The MicroRad 2018 social dinner is available by ticket purchase only and not covered by registration. The ticketed dinner will be held at the MIT Industrial Liaison (ILP) Industrial Meeting Center at 1 Main Street, Cambridge. The building is also known as E90. The dinner begins with a reception and located on the twelfth floor in room E90-1208. The reception starts at 6:30pm. The location is marked in the map.
