COURSE OB<ECTI=ES
Microfinance has expanded dramatically since the first, group-based loans were made by thesocial entrepreneur Muhammad Yunus to women in Bangladesh in 1976 !on-profit and for-profitmicrofinance institutions now compete in the global capital mar"ets Microfinance hassuccessfully demonstrated how social entrepreneurs can brea" down the boundaries betweenphilanthropy and in#estment by deli#ering financial returns and social benefits $fter anintroduction to the "ey concepts and structures of the field, we will loo" at the history of themicrofinance mo#ement and the important role that social entrepreneurs ha#e played in it %ewill then turn to a series of case studies in which social entrepreneurs from around the world use
mar"et principles to address issues such as health, the en#ironment, education, and housing
&he course will include lectures, guest spea"ers, class discussion, web-based #ideos andpodcasts, case studies, and a final presentation and paper &he re'uired texts will be a#ailablefor sale at the !Y( Boo"store as well as on course reser#e at the Bobst )ibrary &he readingswill be posted on Blac"board
COURSE RE>UIREMENTS TO RECEI=E A RA"E

&he 8ertificate in lobal $ffairs offers a solid foundation in global affairs, as well as a tool forunderstanding a world that is constantly changing $ comprehensi#e curriculum pro#idesstudents with:; $n in-depth understanding of political de#elopments and alignments since the end of %orld %ar<<, with special emphasis on the post-cold war=; $ basic grasp of factors, such as trade politics, the role of multinationals, economic strategies ofde#eloping countries, and the economic integration, that shape today>s economy and influence
international relations= and; ?amiliarity with international and non-go#ernmental organi3ations, international law, and thenew and e#ol#ing procedures for dealing with international disputes and intrastate ci#il wars
&he certificate is comprised of six lobal $ffairs courses- two re'uired 5<nternational @elations inthe /ost %orld %ar << Ara-191+ and &he /olitics of <nternational Aconomic @elations-191 and four electi#es rades must be re'uested in all courses used towards thecertificate and completed with a grade of B or better /lease tell me by Cctober 6th if you wish tota"e this course for an e#aluati#e grade
