Also, new associates salaries vary so much we don’t want to commit ourselves.” Honigman, however, doesn’t mind having associate salary specifics out there — they don’t have any competi- tion, at least in Michigan. LARGESTLAW FIRMS

BY DENISE G. CALLAHAN

Young lawyers can be a little like thelady with the blindfold these days, withcareer options in the balance. But it’sprobably best to weigh those optionswith the blinders off.

Many law firm surveys offer salary fig-ures for starting attorneys and the Michi-gan Lawyers Weekly annual Largest LawFirms Survey is no different. Only thisyear, lifestyle benefits are included, andthose little perks can make a difference.

Three years ago, when HonigmanMiller Schwartz and Cohn jumped itsassociate pay scale by $30,000 to$115,000 (plus a $5,000 signing bonus),many thought the top firms would digdeeper in their pockets as well.

But the newest figures reveal that, ifanything, the big guys are actually giv-ing themselves some wiggle room.

For instance, at fifth-ranked DickinsonWright, the list price in 2002 was $90,000,plus a $5,000 bonus. For 2003, the firm of-fered a scale from $80,000-$95,000.

Meanwhile, Howard & Howard,ranked 16th, introduced a range of

$95,000-$100,000 in 2003 instead of theflat $100,000 figure they posted for 2002.

Number 10 Clark Hill went from a flat$95,000 to $90,000 plus a $5,000 bonus.

The only top-20 firm to log in with anincrease was sixth-ranked Warner Nor-cross with a $10,000 bump to $85,000.

Back when the Honigmans of this worldwere jacking up rates, Warner Norcrossannounced a phased plan to increase itsassociate starting salary said Director ofHuman Resources, Cheryl Coutchie.

“I don’t think anyone is having thebest years of their lives right now,” shesaid. “But we are a very conservativelyrun law firm so it is not going to put usin jeopardy to keep our word.”

Nearly half (nine) of the top 20 firmsdidn’t report rookie rates. Why would thatbe? And why are people skittish about re-vealing billing rates and annual billing?

“As far as billing rates go, we are verysensitive about not wanting to seem toohigh and we don’t want to seem too low,”said Wendy Passineau, client services di-rector for the 17th ranked firm SmithHaughey Rice and Roegge. “We also don’twant to provide a benchmark for our com-

petitors so they can adjust their rates. Also, new associates salaries vary somuch we don’t want to commit ourselves.”

Honigman, however, doesn’t mindhaving associate salary specifics outthere — they don’t have any competi-tion, at least in Michigan.

People speculated the firm jacked upits rates to keep step with the risingsalaries nationwide several years agowith the dot-com boom. They were right.

According to CEO Alan S. Schwartz, rates started rising in the Silicon Valley, then the trend seeped onto Wall Street,Chi-town next picked up on the momen-tum and Honigman picked up the mantle.

“We hopefully are competitive nation-wide rather than just in the Detroit areaor Michigan,” said the CEO of the fourthranked firm. “We want to attract the bestand brightest from the best schools.”

James A. Samborn, CEO

are highly motivated producers who havetheir eyes on achieving success.

“We don’t have any required minimumhours but our work ethic is very strong,”he noted. “We work very hard and, there-fore, we do very well. We run ourselvesvery efficiently, and don’t spend moneyunwisely so we can enable our lawyers todo very well.”

As for perks, the company offers stan-dard fare: vacation, flex and part-timearrangements, and a home loan program.

Can’t Take It With YouBut some say there is more to life than

just money. If you work at 41st ranked Parmenter

O’Toole in Muskegon you can work out atthe in-house gym, work flex time, go onfirm outings and hoist a cold one at a localtavern with your work buddies on Fridays.

The firm also boasts a beautiful and safelocation along Lake Michigan to raise yourfamily and the time off in which to enjoy yourloved ones. They also have an unwritten pol-icy: you can’t take yourself too seriously.

“They gotta be fun guys. If they’re not fun,we don’t want them here,” said Chris Kelly,a managing partner with the firm. “Wespend too much time in this building. Wedon’t want to work with a bunch of stiffs.”

Those fun guys have to be honest andfair and willing to work hard, but Kellysaid it is nice they all get to live wherethey live and still “work on some prettycool legal stuff.”

And new hires at Parmenter will bepaid more in 2003. The firm now lists astarting range of $42,500-$75,000, upfrom a flat $40,000 last year.

In addition to its healthy pay raise fornew hires, Warner Norcross also showedit — like Parmenter — is family-friendlywith its lifestyle benefits.

The most unique benefit was the adop-tion reimbursement offering. Coutchiesaid her assistant actually got the ballrolling on that one. She was going throughthe adoption process and brought up thefact that many costs associated with try-

ing to have children aren’t covered in thenormal scheme of things. Usually, beforeparents adopt they go through the expen-sive and arduous fertility process, whichoften isn’t covered, or is only partially cov-ered, by insurance.

The firm pays a $2,500 cost reimburse-ment, plus the firm fills in the gaps thatdisability pay might not cover, to allownew moms and/or dads to stay home withtheir child.

Job ShoppingAgain, money and even perks aren’t the

only things to consider when job hunting. Those new attorneys paid all that moneyfor law school but, as first round draftpicks, do they really get to “practice” lawin those early years?

Some from smaller firms claim thatlarger firms pay the big bucks and thenstuff their high-priced talent in a law li-brary doing grunt work.

Not true, said Thomas W. Linn, CEO ofMiller Canfield, Paddock and Stone,P.L.C., the state’s largest law firm.

Beginning lawyers at Miller, Canfieldjump right into the trenches, taking dep-ositions, doing discovery and all thethings — with supervision — lawyers do.The young pups can also find themselves— if they are litigators — occupying achair in a courtroom that actually has atable after about six months.

On the transactional side, Linn saidfirst- and second-year attorneys can findthemselves running million-dollar deals.

And with the high price these lawyerscommand, Linn said law firms can’t affordarid associate assignments.

“The salaries are only the half of it —there is also substantial overhead,” he ex-plained. “They have to do meaningful, productive work rapidly.”

Women In LawHow are the job opportunities for

women looking these days? The numbers aren’t great but, then

again, one has to look at the bigger picture. When Miller Canfield Deputy CEO

Beverly Hall Burns was 13 years old backin the 50s she knew she wanted to be alawyer. Her Sunday school teacher — abarrister himself — told her girls couldn’tgo to law school. She tried journalismfirst, but later pursued her originaldream. She’s been one of the top dogs atthe firm for years. But out of 139 part-ners, only 21 share her gender.

There is a caveat. Miller Canfield is theoldest firm in the state and that can makea difference when looking at gender issues.

“We have a very mature group of part-ners who made partner when womenweren’t even in law school, much less outof law school,” she commented. “The bulkof the women partners out there nowmade partner in the last 10 years.”

Moreover, Burns noted that the firmhas and is hiring “fabulous” younglawyers who will one day jump on thepartnership track. As more and morewomen enter the law, the numbers won’tlook so “glass ceiling-ish”

The firm recently announced the eleva-tion of another rising star, Amanda Van-Dusen, who took a seat as a managing di-rector in January. VanDusen, who, like somany other female lawyers wanted to man-age both work and family, found that oppor-tunity at Miller Canfield. It seems thingsmight be looking up for the “gentler gender.”

Moving On UpThe Lawyers Weekly survey showed

some other new faces who moved to thetop of a couple law firms’ managementstructure. Not everyone listed their man-aging partners/CEOs, but of those whodid, three firms have new bosses.

After the untimely death of J. ThomasLenga last spring, Clark Hill elected JohnJ. Hern Jr. as its CEO.

Meanwhile, Michael Cavanaugh atFraser Trebilock Davis & Dunlap handedthe baton to Michael H. Perry, and CraigNeckers stepped down at Smith HaugheyRice & Roegge.

“I think Craig felt he had put in histime and it was time for someone else tostep up,” said new CEO Patrick F. Geary.

“I’m not sure how it happened. I think Imust have stepped out to go to the bathroomand when I came back I was it,” he said.

All joking aside, Geary said he is find-ing out how — and why — leadership atlaw firms and major corporations tends tochange about every five to seven years. Henoted he’s finding he has a pretty awe-some responsibility and there is certainlyless time to actually practice law.

“Some of it is what I like to call play-ground supervising, settling squabblesthat come up,” he explained. “I try to leavethe small things to others. But it’s fasci-nating. I think it is a significant honor tobe in this seat but there is also a signifi-cant responsibility. It is a big deal to be amanaging partner, that’s why I thinkthere is opportunity for burnout.”

Growth: Great Or Gruesome? There have been some internal

changes, what about external growth inthis flagging economy? It appears therewasn’t a whole lot.

Linn said Miller Canfield — findingstagnant growth a bad thing — added 18lawyers in the name of client service, tohelp handle burgeoning workloads.

Moreover, Plunkett & Cooney added 14lawyers to keep up with growth in a num-ber of practice areas, said Henry B.Cooney, its president and CEO.

The rest of the responding law firms re-ported low single digit increases, no in-creases and nine firms experiencedlawyer-loss counts.

While some top dogs, such as Honig-man’s Schwartz, are projecting things willbe improving — and says he’s alreadywitnessed a business boost at the firm —others predict the glory days are over.

“Years ago, firms were growing by leapsand bounds, that’s just not happeninganymore except by mergers,” said DavidOtis, managing partner of the Plunkett &Cooney Lansing office. “There just isn’tgrowth in business anymore. Law firmsare just trying to hold down what theyhave. If you’re not shrinking, you’re pat-ting yourself on the back.”

Survey MethodologyTo determine the largest law firms in Michigan, Lawyers Weekly mailedsurveys to law firms across the state in March 2003.

Firms that received questionnaires were selected by using last year’s survey,in addition to surveys from previous years, together with informationavailable from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.

The survey was also promoted in various issues of Michigan LawyersWeekly. All law firms with 20 or more attorneys were invited to participate.

Firms are ranked by the number of attorneys they employed in Michigan asof Jan. 1, 2003. The total number includes lawyers in all Michigan offices.

Lawyers Weekly appreciates the cooperation of all the law firms thatparticipated in this year’s survey.
