INTRODUCTIONThankyouforyourinterestinthe2016MIWGSARAcademy.Itisoneofthemostphysicallydemanding,academicallystringent,andrewardingactivitythatCivilAirPatrolhastooffer.Whetheryouareaseniormemberorcadet,youwillbeprovidedwithhands-onSAR,fieldleadershipexperience,andsurvivaltraining.ThisAcademytakesplaceinthewildernesswithnomodernconveniencesavailabletothestudents.Conditionsareprimitive,withnoindoorplumbingandnoelectricity.Bathingwillbeprovidedandwillbeavailable.Sleepingmaybeinconstructedsheltersregardlessoftheweatherexperienced.Weathercanbedryorrainy,withtemperatureschangingfromthehigh90'sto40degreeswithinhours.Allcellphoneswillbecollectedatsignin,andstudentsmayonlycallhomeintheeventofanemergency.Theknowledgethatyouwillgainaboutyourself,theCAPEmergencyServicesProgram,andsearch&rescuewillremainwithyoufortherestofyourlife.TheAcademyisverydemanding,bothphysicallyandmentally.ThecurriculumandstandardsoftheAcademy’straining,facilities,andequipmentareconstantlyevaluatedforimprovementsandneededupdatesasfundingallows.Thestaffareallvolunteersandconsistofcadetsandseniormembers.Theywillteachandtrainyouforninefulldays.Youareexpectedtodoyourbestforthoseninedays!

HISTORYOFSARACADEMYTheMichiganWingSearchandRescueAcademybeganin1994whenasmallgroupofmembersrecognizedtheneedforconsistent,qualitytraininginthefieldofEmergencyServices.Thentheydesignedacomprehensiveschoolthatcouldprovidethattrainingwithinthecourseofaweek.LeadbytheeffortsofthenCaptainSheilaCerny,theychosealocationdeepintheheartoftheHuronNationalForestthatisunparalleledforteachingwoodsmanship,navigation,andpracticalleadershipskills.LongbeforetasktrainingwasintroducedbyNationalHeadquarters,thefoundersofSARAcademycreatedtheirownbydecidingwhatknowledgewasnecessaryforaGroundTeamMemberandthendevisingamethodoftestingthatknowledgeafteritwastaught.SARAcademybeganwithonlyonecourse,theBasicCourse,whichwasdesignedtotakememberswhohadnopreviousEStrainingandprovidethemwithallclassroomandpracticaltrainingnecessaryforthemtobecomeGroundTeamMemberQualified.Overthenextfewyears,SARAcademycontinuedtogrowandexpandtomeettheincreasingneedsofitsreturningstudentpopulation.By1997,threenewcourseshadbeenadded:theAdvancedCourse,whichprovidesmorein-depthandthoroughGroundTeamMembertraining,theMedicCourse,whichprovidesstudentswithwildernessfirstaidtraining,andtheGroundTeamLeaderCourse.In2010aSeniorCoursewasstartedtotrainseniormemberstobecomegroundteammemberqualified.2012markedanothernewcourseforSARAcademy.TheAircrewSurvivalCoursewasstartedtotrainaircrewmembersinsurvivalandmuchmore.SARAcademyhashadmorethantwohundredfiftygraduatessinceitsinceptionin1994.Manyofthosegraduateshavegoneontosuccessfulcareersinthemilitary,inaviation,andinthebusinessworld.Stillothersremainwithinourprogram,diligentlygivingbacktonewstudentswhatknowledgetheyreceivedthemselvesasstudentsmanyyearsago.AsSARAcademyapproachesits23ndyearofoperation,ithasevolvedintoanAcademyofutmostquality,havingbenefittedfromtheinfluenceofthehundredsofstaffmembersandstudentswhohavehelpedtomakeitwhatitistoday.

MISSIONBASECOURSECourseOverviewTheMissionBaseCourseisaneight(8)daycourseforthoseinterestedinMissionBaseOperations.YouwilllearnabouttheIncidentCommandStructure(ICS)aMissionBaseneedstobesuccessful.Aportionofyourtrainingwillhaveyouparticipatinginthosesections.Awhollyuniqueexperienceinthiscourseisthatyouwillnotonlybeastudent,butyouwillbeprovidinglivedirectsupporttotheoperationsofSARAcademyasawhole.Thiscourserequiresbothmentalandphysicalagility.Successcomesfromtheabilitytorespondrapidly,intuitively,andoftencreatively.Teamworkwillbeyourmostimportantkeytosuccessinthiscourse.Youwillbecountingonpeopleyou’veprobablynevermet,andtheywillbecountingonyourjustthesame.Thisweek,youwilltrainintheskillsneededforMissionRadioOperator(MRO),MissionStaffAssistant(MSA),andUrbanDirectionFinding(UDF).Whilecompletingthosequalifications,someoftheoperationaltasksyouwillbeassistinginarethecommunicationsunit,operationssection,logisticcontrol,andsupporttocoursesandteamsinthefield.CourseObjectivesTheMissionBaseCoursewillintroducememberstoMissionBaseOperations.AllmembersattendingwillhavetheopportunitytoachieveMissionRadioOperator,MissionStaffAssistant,andUrbanDirectionFinding.Finally,allstudentswillbeexpectedtocompetentlyperformdutiesrequiredtosupporttheoperationsoftheschool.CourseRequirements

GENERALINFORMATIONTRANSPORTATION StudentsmaydrivetotheAcademyinaprivatelyownedvehicle(POV).UponarrivalatSARAcademy,thevehiclewillbeparkedinadesignatedarea.DuringtheAcademy,cadetswillnotbeallowedtooperatetheirvehiclesandwillberequiredtoturntheirkeysinatcheck-in.IfacadetneedstoentertheirvehicleagainforanyreasonduringtheAcademy,youmusthavepermissionofyourCourseCommander.PERSONALPROPERTY Makesureyoucheckpriortodeparturetoensureyouhavealltherequireditemsonthepackinglistforyourcourse.ThepackinglistfortheBasicCourseislocatedinAttachmentC.IfyouarrivetoSARAcademywithouttheitemslistedonthepackinglist,youwillnotbeallowedtocheckinuntilyoudo.Thereareseverallocationstopurchasemissingitems:BaseStoreatCampGraylingorGlen’sMarketandK-MartindowntownGrayling.SARAcademyanditsstaffarenotresponsibleforlossortheftofyourpersonalequipmentorproperty.Youneedtotakecareofyourproperty.Itissuggestedthatyouleavevaluablesandjewelryathome.LABELALLPROPERTY.Pleasecheckyourequipmentanditemscarefullybeforedeparture.AnylostitemsthatarefoundandidentifiableatthecloseoftheAcademywillbeshippedtoyouatyourexpenseifitcanbeidentified.BRINGONLYTHEITEMSLISTEDONTHEPACKINGLIST.Donotbringanyextraequipment/gear.CadetswillturnincellphonesatthebeginningoftheAcademy.MEDICATIONS Allmedications,prescriptionorover-thecounter(OTC),willbeloggedwiththehealthservicesofficer.AllSTUDENTSareexpectedtomanagetheirownmedications.Ifyouhaveanyspecificrequirements,pleasebesuretocoordinatewiththeCommandantpriortoarrival,orifitisalastminutechange,thehealthservicesofficeronarrival.PleasebesuretoindicatemedicationsneededorOTCsauthorizedonthemedicalreleaseform(CAPF163).HEALTH AsafetyofficerisavailablealongwithseveralEMTs,Paramedics,andothertrainedfirstaidpersonnel.Firstaidwillbeprovidedforroutineandminorillnessorinjury.Thereisacountyhospitalinthevicinityforanymedicalproblems.Intheeventofseriousillnessorinjury,everyattemptwillbemadetonotifyyourparent/guardian/emergencycontactassoonaspossible.LettheHealthServicesOfficerknowofanyhealthissuesorproblemsyouareencountering.Studentsareexpectedtobringsuppliestohelpthemselves(blisterkits,smallquantitiesofOTCmeds),butifyourequireassistancepleaselettheHealthServicesOfficerknow.CELLPHONES CADETSMAYNOTKEEPCELLPHONESONORWITHTHEMDURINGTHEACADEMY!Youarehighlyencouragedtoleaveyourcellphoneathomeorwithyourparents.IfyouchoosetobringacellphonetotheAcademy,itmustbeturnedinatcheck-in.ItwillthenbeshutoffandstoredinalockedcontainerforthedurationoftheAcademy.AttheendoftheAcademy,yourcellphonewillbereturnedtoyou.CadetswillhaveaccesstoaphoneinanemergencybasisONLY.Parents/guardianswillbeprovidedanemergencycontactnumberatcheck-intobeusedONLYinanemergencysituation.Anystudentfoundwithacellphonewillbesenthome!

RELIGIOUSSERVICES ForthosestudentswhowishtoattendareligiousserviceduringSARAcademy,anon-denominationalserviceiscurrentlyintheplanningstages.Wedonothaveachaplainonstaffnordowehaveachurchinthefield,however,wewilltryourbesttoaccommodateyourneeds.MEALS SARAcademyhasarigorousscheduleandstudentswilleatallthreemealsperdayanddrinkplentyoffluids.RefrigeratorsandmicrowavesareNOTavailable.Studentswillhavethreeoptionsforfoodthisyear.OptionA(SeeattachmentAformoreinformation)ThestudentwillberesponsibleforALLoftheirmealsANDsnacks.OptionB(SeeattachmentBandCformoreinformation)Thestudentwillberesponsiblefor11mealsANDsnackswhileSARAcademywillcovertherestofthemeals(13mealswhichisincludedinthecost).OptionC(SeeattachmentBandCformoreinformation)ThestudentwillberesponsibleforsnacksONLYwhileSARAcademywillcoverallofyourmeals(24mealswhichisincludedinthecost).ForthoseofstudentswhochooseoptionAorB,atleastonemealEACHdaymustbecookedoveranopenfire.Seethefoodmatrixformoreinformation.ThemealsprovidedbySARAcademywillbeMREswithheaters.ADULTSUPERVISION SARAcademyhasafullstaffofadultofficers(over21)attheactivity.Cadetswhoarestudentswillbesupervisedbyadultofficers.SLEEPINGARRANGEMENTS MissionBaseCoursestudentswillbeassignedabunkinthebarracksbasedongender.WATER Weguaranteethatatalltimestherewillbesufficientwaterforourstudents.Safetyisourhighestpriority.TheCourseCommanderswillmonitorandensurethatallstudentsaredrinkingplentyofwatereachdayoftheAcademy.CONTIGENCYPLANS AllSARAcademyStaffmembershaveacontingencybook.Thisbookisusedasguidanceonwhattodointheeventofanemergency.Allstaffhasbeentrainedinwhattodoandhowtodoit.Eachday,theDutyOfficerwillcontactCampGrayling’sRangeControltoadviseonourstatus.WearealsoincontactwiththelocalFireDepartment,USForestService,andStatePolice.Theyhavebeenorientatedwithourmissionbaseandknowhowtogetincontactwithusiftheneedarises.EMERGENCYCONTACT AnEMERGENCYphonenumbertoreachourSARAcademyEmergencyOperationsCenter(EOC)willbeprovidedtostudents,staff,andparentsonarrivalandwillbepostedonourwebsiteaftertheAcademybegins.

PARENTS(PLEASEREAD) Parents,TheMichiganWingSearchandRescue(SAR)Academyisanexperienceyourchildwillneverforget!SARAcademyisoneofthemostphysicallyandmentallychallengingactivitiesCivilAirPatrolhastooffer.Notonlythat,itisalsoanincrediblyrewardingactivity.Yoursonordaughterwillgaininvaluableknowledgeaboutsearchandrescue,butmoresoaboutthemselvesandtheirownpersonallimits.Thisknowledgewilllastthemalifetime.Studentswillgainhands-onexperienceinlandnavigationwithamapandcompass,searchlineoperations,directionfinding,crashsceneprocedures,survivalskills,FirstAidandCPR,teamwork,andteamoperations.Bytheendoftheweek,studentswillbeproficientwiththenewskillstheyhavelearned.SARAcademyconcludeswithafieldtrainingexercise(FTX)tosimulateanactualsearchandrescuemission.Studentsareabletoputalloftheskillsandknowledgetheylearnedthroughouttheweektouseduringthisfieldtrainingexercise.Oftenourchildrenareasresponsibleastheopportunitieswepresentorallow.SARAcademyprovidesasafe,trainingenvironment,wherecarefullyplannedstrategicchallengesteachvaluablelifeskillsthatgofartherthanjustthesearchandrescuetaskslearned.AttheAcademy,wehavehightrainingstandardsandhighexpectations,pushingstudentstomeetandpushpasttheirownpersonallimits.TheskillslearnedattheAcademycannotonlybenefitthestudentsinCAP,butalsothroughouttheirlives.Theseskillsinclude:● Communication:Theseskillsarevitalinanysearchandrescuemission.Studentspracticebothtalking andlisteningthroughouttheweek.Focusisgiventooneononeconversationsandtalkinginfrontofagroup.● Leadership:Whenstudentsstarttheweek,theyarefollowers.Bytheendoftheweek,theybecomeleaders amongtheirteam.Theyarepresentedsimpleormultifacetedleadershiproles,wheretheyareabletoworkina safetrainingenvironment,wheretheycanmakemistakesandlearnfromthem.● Teamwork:Throughouttheweek,teamleadershipexercisesteachthestudentstoworktogethertocomplete tasks,efficientlyandeffectively,completingtheirmission.● CriticalThinking:Anotherimportantpartofsearchandrescue,criticalthinkingisrealizedascadetslearnto developplansbefore“jumpinginto”action.● ProblemSolving:Practiceddailywithcriticalthinking,problemsolvingisanessentialtraitwherestudents developsolutionsbeforeaskingforhelp.● PersonalandTeamConfidence:Workinginhighpressureandhighstressenvironments,itisimportanttohave personalconfidenceinpersonalskills,butalsoconfidenceintheteammembersyouwillbeworkingwith.This aspectincreasesdailyascadetspushthroughchallengingtasks,notgivingup,andcompletingtheirmission.● CombatingFearandAnxiety:Studentsrealizefeariswhatyou“makeupinyourownmind”.Oftennewtasks arepresentedtostudents,andavarietyofemotionsareshown.Fearandanxietyareconquereddailyas studentspushthemselvespasttheirpersonallimitsandcompletetaskstheyneverthoughtwerepossible.SARAcademyisconductedinasafeenvironmentwithhighlytrainedandexperiencedcadet/seniorstaff.Thestaffmembersoverseeeveryphaseoftrainingandarepresentwiththestudentsatalltimes.WearehonoredthatyouhaveconsideredtheMIWGSARAcademyasanactivityforyourchildtoattendthissummer!
