Rapids to Reed City (13 miles) Leroy to Cadillac ( 16.3 miles).15 Snowmobiles are permitted from Russell Rd. north of Rockford to Cadillac.16 Paved shoulder for 5 blocks (McCracken to Sherin St).17 Equestrian trail on one side, with wide shoulder.18 These trails are state-owned but not open for public use yet. 19 Northern Tier Trail is a network trail with these endpoints: State Rd., Towar Rd, Cricket Lane, and
Abbey, Whitehills Park.20 The Lansing River Trail network runs from Dietrich Park to Harrison Rd. at the MSU campus, Hazel
St. to Moores Park and from Potter Park to Maguire Park.21 Horses are permitted from 67th St. to 1 mile east of Grand Junction on an adjacent bridle path. 22 Includes a 9.5 mile loop in the city. 23 This is a network trail with these endpoints: Linden Rd., Neff Rd., Wilson Rd., Willard Rd.24 Some portions of the trail include on street connections (at James P. Cole Blvd. and Garfield St.,
and at E. Boulevard Dr.).25 The trail is paved for half mile in Imlay City.26 The trail is paved in 2 sections, downtown Oxford and Leonard north 1 mile. The balance of the
trail is crushed limestone. Horses aren't allowed on paved portions.27 The northern half of the 12.5 mile trail is surfaced with limestone fines and the south half of the trail
is paved with asphalt.28 The Bridge to Bay Trail is being built by many communities and includes some on road wide
shoulder sections along M-29. The longest continuous section of trail is 10 miles long and runs from the City of St. Clair through Marine City.
29 Horses are only permitted north of Dutton Rd. There is a 1/4 mile paved segment at the northern endpoint which is Atwater St.
30 Connected to Macomb Orchard Trail and Paint Creek Trail. A 3.5 mile sidewalk-based temporary route through Pontiac bypasses the only incomplete section.
31 This trail includes bike lanes from Maheras Gentry Park to the Edsel Ford Freeway.32 There is a connector trail between Kensington Hike-Bike Trail and the Island Lake Trail under I-96.33 Trail picks up Dexter to Hudson Mills Metro Park for another 5 miles.34 Path has been rehabilitated from Meadowbrook to I-94. 35 Trail narrows to 6 ft. between Detroit Ave and Munson Park.36 6.5 miles is paved in Hamburg Twp. There is a parallel equestrian path from Putnam Township to

The Downriver Linked Greenways InitiativeEnjoy the East-West Connector Trail of the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative, the key link in a 30 plus mile connected route, extending from Lower Huron and the Willow/Oakwood Metroparks through Flat Rock, Gibraltar and all the way to Lake Erie Metropark on the shores of Lake Erie. You can even rent a bike for the ride at Willow Metropark. Along the route, a variety of outdoor activities can be enjoyed in the metroparks as well. Canoeing or kayaking is popular along the scenic Huron River or in its peaceful backwaters within Oakwoods Metropark. Picnic areas abound. and there are plenty of opportunities to view an array of wildlife, including deer, ducks, muskrats, mink, swans and turtles. And if wildlife viewing is your passion, visit the Lake Erie Metropark for views of cranes and raptors or travel north another five miles on the North-South Connector Trail along Humbug Marsh and the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge. Check online for the dates of special programs offering all sorts of educational opportunities relating to these special preserves.

Michigan is #1! That’s right, at 2,623 miles of Pure Michigan Trails and counting, Michigan
has more active, multi-use trails than any other state in the nation. And while you’ve probably walked or biked or skied on a Michigan trail and enjoyed the traffic-free travel that only a trail can provide, there are lots of other things happening on Michigan trails, every day.
1. Train, train, train. On every trail in Michigan you’ll find runners and running clubs out running their way to fitness and better race times. It’s a safe, beautiful and easy place to log those miles.
2. Escape on the Michigander with hundreds of new friends. The Michigander is the only cycling tour in Michigan that focuses on trails – taking riders off busy roads to experience Michigan in a whole new way. It’s a perfect goal for you, your friends or your family. There’s more info right on this Trail Guide.
3. Follow the path of the high wheelers. Pedal from Petoskey to Harbor Springs along the Little Traverse Wheelway, the path of an old boardwalk that carried high wheeler bikes in the 1880s.
4. Roll through history. Trails like the Iron Ore Heritage Trail let you travel through time and immerse yourself in Michigan’s storied past.
5. Walk to the arts. Hop on the Falling Waters Trail in Jackson and visit the Armory Arts Project at the repurposed Jackson Prison Facility.
6. Get away for a weekend. Find a trail, park your car and head out on your bikes. Many Michigan trails let you reach a gem of an inviting small town with an inn or B&B waiting.
7. Trek through the solar system. Lansing’s River Trail has a two-mile scale model of the solar system. You’ll walk faster than the speed of light with each step taking you a million scale miles.
8. Dig the small town eats. Almost every Michigan trail passes through welcoming small towns to explore and eat your way through. From pie to ice cream to pasties, there’s no better fuel for the trail than local fare.
9. Go to the dogs. The Kalamazoo Valley Trail is one of many trails that offer programs including weekly dog walks with fellow pet lovers.
10. Go wild. Bring the binoculars and the bird guide. There’s great bird watching to be had along the varied terrain that Michigan trails travel.

The Fred Meijer Heartland TrailThe 41-mile paved Fred Meijer Heartland Trail from Greenville to Alma offers a peaceful trip through an ever-changing landscape of prime verdant agricultural lands, woods, meadows, wetlands, and small towns. Deer and other wildlife can be spotted traversing adjoining open lands and many native wildflowers brighten the trail.
As you travel this trail, the many historical attractions along the way allow you to indulge in a bit of time travel. A short connecting trail to Montcalm Community College and the Heritage Village, features a cluster of 20 local historic 19th Century buildings and hundreds of artifacts from the local life. Visitors to the annual Heritage Festival experience the Village’s one-room
schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and town jail come alive with re-enactments. Other trailside attractions paying tribute to days gone by are the Railroad Worker Memorial in Stanton and the Old Fence Rider Museum in Edmore. You can even pedal across Fish Creek on a circa 887 trestle bridge halfway between Sidney and Stanton. At the trail’s northern endpoint, you’ll find Alma, featuring Alma College’s beautifully preserved historic campus and many carefully restored houses along tree-lined streets.
Official trailheads are located at Stanton, McBride, and Edmore, although many cross streets offer parking spots.
The TART and Leelanau TrailsThere may not be a more delightful 31 miles in Michigan than the interconnected TART and Leelanau Trails – part of the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails Network. You can wind your way from Bunker Hill Road on the east side of Traverse City, to Suttons Bay, halfway up the east side of the Leelanau Peninsula. The journey gives you a true blend of this area’s eclectic downtown and scenic lakefronts, wrapped in an intimate experience of everything nature has to offer in this unique region of the state. The TART Trail winds its way through the exciting Traverse City, for 10.5 miles on a variety of surfaces –
boardwalks, asphalt trail, and wide concrete sidewalks. It’s easy to see why seventeen percent of TART Trail’s users are taking advantage of the trail for commuting purposes, as it links up so many destinations: downtown shops, restaurants, brewpubs, bike shops, offices, parks, the public library, beaches, the marina, and many charming neighborhoods. Picturesque waterfront views abound as the trail travels along Traverse Bay's East Arm and then connects with the swimming beaches and marina along the Bay’s West arm.
Further west, the 15.5 mile paved Leelanau Trail from Traverse City to Suttons Bay greets you with lush forest arches in a canopy overhead and views of gorgeous greenery, rolling hills, bountiful orchards, peaceful meadows and an aquatic medley of streams, lakes, and ponds.
The Iron Ore Heritage TrailAlthoughthe48-mileIronOreHeritageTrailisaworkinprogress,30mileswillbecompletebyJuly1,2013.ThissectiontakesbikersfromIshpemingeastwardtoChocolayalongrailgradesthatoncecarriedorefromthewesternminesandtimberfromtheeasternforeststoMarquetteHarbor.Alongtheway,iconicimagesoftheUP’sironminingpastgreetyou–mineshafts,oredocks,anddeepminingpits.Thetrailtakesyouthroughthreedowntownsthatgrewwiththeminingandshippingindustries,pastfivemuseumsinterpretingtheregion’s
richhistory,andnumerousshopsandrestaurants.Thetrailisacombinationofasphaltandcrushedgranite.Interpretivesignageandartworksofrecycledminingandrailmaterialsilluminatetheregion’smininghistory.JumpoffthetrailattheSooLineBridgeinMarquettetoconnectwithover25milesofsuperbsingletrackmountainbiketrailsthathavehelpedwinMarquettethedesignationofoneofAmerica’s"TopFivePlacestoLiveandRide."
