What is STUNT to Michigan State?

To the Michigan State Spartans, STUNT means so much more than just a sport. It is our fifth year

competing as a STUNT team and it has been our most successful season yet. We love that STUNT

gives us the opportunity to showcase the strengths of each athlete on our team. STUNT is about using

the energy from the coaches and our teammates to fuel athletes, both on and off the mat. One of our

favorite things about STUNT is looking back at game footage and seeing the excitement of our

sideline. When partner stunt 6 hits, even though there is only one stunt group on the mat, we all feel

that same pride and excitement. This sport tests our physical ability and emotional strength both at

practice and during games. We are so lucky to be a part of this growing sport and can’t wait to see

what the future holds for STUNT.

"To me, STUNT means pushing yourself harder than the day before and pushing yourself to be the best for your team. It taught me that you have to given the sport everything you have and trust in yourself and your team in order to be successful." - Sydney Pieczynski "STUNT the Sport to me means proving to yourself that you are capable and growing as a team with every new routine and new challenge." - Shelby Sacco "STUNT is a sport that allows you to do what you love most while playing a fun, competitive game. It's challenging to learn the routines, but now that we have it is so much fun to see how much we have improved and grown as a team over the year." - Sophie Roeder "STUNT means challenging myself and my team to become better athletes and learning what it really means to be a family even when the days get tough."- Courtney Gifford "STUNT is a way to express my love for cheerleading in a new innovative way. STUNT pushes the limits in the world of cheerleading every year the bar is raised. I enjoy the thrill of trying new skills and seeing my team succeed. Hitting skills that we have never dreamt of doing is the best feeling in the world." -Emma Berkal "STUNT to me means getting to show all of the components of cheerleading to the world in a way that has never been done before. It makes me feel like a true athlete getting to perform high caliber skills head to head against another team. Not only does it take physical ability, but it takes determination and positive energy from each an every teammate to push through and be successful in a STUNT game. Nothing is more rewarding that a fired up sideline full of your teammates and coaches knowing that all of your hard work paid off." -Kelsey Daldine

Caitlyn Vermiglio is the Head Coach of the MSU All-Girl Cheer & STUNT Team. This is her second year as head coach of the program with the year prior as assistant coach. From 2012-2015 she was an active athlete of the program and competing in STUNT. STUNT was started at Michigan State University in 2012, as this was Caitlyn’s first year on the team. She is so grateful to have been an athlete in STUNT prior to becoming a coach, as this separates her from many other STUNT coaches and offers her a different perspective. This will be Michigan State’s second Nationals appearance with the first being in 2017 in Dallas, Texas. She was also fortunate enough to be awarded STUNT Coach of the Year in 2017 and became an active member in the STUNT Advisory Board. STUNT is an amazing sport that has allowed her to grow as an athlete and now as a coach. Caitlyn loves the competitive nature and how it allows cheerleading to become a little less subjective. This sport can highlight the strengths from different athletes with the variety of difficulty. She is looking forward to continuing her cheerleading career with this program, as it is growing faster with more success than anyone could have ever dreamed. Caitlyn will forever a Spartan! GO GREEN!

Brianna Ferguson is an assistant coach for MSU All-Girl Competitive

Cheerleading. Previously she cheered sideline and competitive

seasons for 4 years at Roseville High School. She came to MSU in

2013 for her freshman year and cheered for MSU program all 4 years

of her college career.

Ms Ferguson states that, “This team has allowed me to learn many

cheerleading and personal skills that I never would have gathered

had I not been a part of this program. As an athlete, it was easy for

me to pick up STUNT as a lot of the same skills and precision are

mastered in both MHSAA and STUNT. Joining the team a year after

their first STUNT team was a great experience for me. It was a

learning experience for myself and our program, so knowing I was

part of the process was an amazing feeling.”

Last year, Brianna was a member on the first team to make it to STUNT Nationals for MSU All-Girl. It was a memorable

senior year of cheerleading for Brianna.

Brianna graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology this past December with

specializations in Coaching and Health Promotions. As an assistant coach, Brianna specialized in flyer’s flexibility and

advancement of skills this past season.

Brianna remarks that, “STUNT as a coach is a completely different mindset, but being able to compete in it the past 4

years made it that much easier to help lead the team to success. I am extremely thankful to be able to coach a group of

such talented athletes and once again be headed to STUNT Nationals. Go Green!”

Paige Thornton is an assistant tumbling coach for the Michigan State

All Girl Competitive Cheerleading team. Paige has five years’ previous

experience coaching All-Star, but this year she has found her passion

coaching college age athletes and especially STUNT.

Paige was a former 4-year athlete on MSUCCT and a member of the

first STUNT teams in Michigan. She has been amazed to see how the

sport has developed and grown into the wonderful entity it is today.

When Paige is not coaching cheerleading, she is the head athletic

trainer at Livonia Churchill High School in Livonia, MI.
