Welcome back brothers and sisters. It was nice to see a good turnout last month. Thanks again to Aron for the bang-up lesson he gave on Auto Entry Pro-cedures. He had some really good ideas that I am sure some of us will take to our next auto lock out.
Because of the rain at September's meeting, the outside portion of the meeting was cancelled and moved to October’s meeting. We plan on having everyone bring their work vehicles to go over anything that may be helpful to other members. Things like how to power your key machines, what kind of lighting works best, how to keep your keys from falling off the
hooks, and so on. Hopefully there will still be enough daylight to get this ac-complished. Please try to show up on time. Since we are going to be outside anyway, why not get a group picture like we did last year. From there, we will be going back inside for dinner and conversation. Once again, I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the October meeting. The better the turn out, the more participation and the more knowledge that is shared. I am here for the camaraderie and the learning. How about you?

Even though most of the pinning at the BEST factory in Indi-anapolis is automated, keys are still tested. In order to avoid calluses on fingers, this small bootie was made to facilitate the constant and tedious repetition of keys testing combinated cores.

Hello, everyone. I just wanted to explain why I haven't been coming to the LSA meetings. I was always wondering why I was so fatigued and exhausted and irritable and forgetful. I have a new doctor that sent me to a place in Lapeer where they do a sleep study. You spend the night and their facility with all these probes with wires hanging from them that get put all over your body and your head. They get plugged into this device the device is hooked into a computer and they also have cameras on you to see what is going on and why you are not getting a proper night's sleep. Little did I know that I have moderate to severe sleep apnea. This is when your breathing is so shallow or stops completely( which mine did ) that your mind is letting your body know that you are not getting the proper oxygen levels and then you wake up. Someone may have symptoms of sleep apnea if they have more than 5 waking up episodes per hour where are you have abnormal breathing they would have moderate sleep apnea. if you have 30 to 40 epi-sodes or more, you are in the severe status. My episodes we're 30 times in an hour I had a hundred and 176 episodes in one 8 hour night. People can easily die from this problem. When people die in their sleep and there is no other reason, this may be why. I am going to be getting a CPAP machine that you wear at night to keep your airway open so I can get a deep sleep. The reason why I am emailing you about this is that sleep apnea can manifest itself into a lot of other serious problems if undiagnosed. People are unaware sometimes that they even have it. I know of one person that had sleep apnea and has died from it. He was only in his early 50s; two other people that I know that has died in their sleep and have no other reason than our problem. I want the members of LSA and other locksmiths around the country to understand this is a serious problem and to please have yourself checked out. A good idea is to Google 'sleep apnea 'and see if they have any symptoms. I would like them to have a long and healthy life. Thank you very much, Mark J Bickmann

Looking for Some Discontinued Items
Being a locksmith in Michigan I still have some accounts on the Dexter keyway. For those of you unaware, Dexter Lock Manufacturing was located in Dexter, Michigan. I am sometimes able to “fudge it” with Kwikset keyway products but on Master key systems it is very difficult and I would rather not “fudge” or compromise a master key system. Does anyone in the association (or otherwise) have any stock of aftermarket Dexter keyway products. I am looking for knob cylinders, and mortise cylinders, I am not concerned with finish at this time. Of course, satin chrome and duranotic would be preferred. I would also be interested in another former Michigan product. Almont brass padlocks with the Dexter keyway. Almont lock company was formerly in Almont, Michigan. If anyone has product or knows of a supplier that might have some product on their shelves, it would be greatly appreciated. I know of other locksmiths looking for Dexter keyway cylinders as well. Thanks, Ray Sinai I can be reached at [email protected]

Below is a 'Sample Letter' to send to your local Chamber of Commerce. Simply copy/paste,
then insert your individual company information, then send.
Submit it to your local Chamber of Commerce for publication in their newsletter. Even if
you are not a member of a Chamber, you can send it anyway. Just modify the last paragraph and
leave off your company information. This is more of a PSA, rather than an advertisement for your
company anyway.
=========================================================================
I am a locksmith and wanted to warn you all about a "scam" that has plagued our in-dustry for years. Individuals posing as legitimate locksmiths have engaged in serious "bait and switch" tactics that have preyed on consumers in distress. The scam works like this: You lock yourself out of your house or car and use your phone to search for local locksmiths. You see advertisements and Google Maps listings for companies that of-fer to unlock your house or car for a price as low as $20-45. The "locksmith" arrives and immediately fabricates a story that your car/lock is unique and the $20-45 won't cover it. The price jumps to $200, $300, in some cases as high as $600. They almost always insist you pay in cash and they intimidate you to pay. The Federal Trade Commission has been tracking these scams for years and has put together a consumer help page with more info: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2008/05/ftc-urges-consumers-use-caution-when-seeking-locksmith. The BBB has warned against these companies as well and almost every major media out-let has reported on it (hundreds of videos on YouTube if you are interested in learning more). Please, find a reputable locksmith company and save their information in your phone so that you are prepared in case you are ever locked out. Ask a friend or a family member for a reference. Another resource is FindALocksmith.com - this directory website is maintained by our industry Association and everyone on that list has un-dergone a background check. Help protect your friends and family by sharing this in-formation with them. [Insert Your Company Name Here] is listed in the FindALocksmith.com website. However, it is more important to us that you find any legitimate locksmith ahead of time, and not to be compromised by an over priced, high pressured scammer, pre-tending to be a legitimate locksmith. I had the wonderful privilege of visiting one of our distant LSA members this summer. Phil Agius has been a long time member of the LSA, both as Frank’s Key & Lock Shop, as well as represent-ing Framon Manufacturing and Blue Dog Keys, since they acquired BDK a few years ago. Phil and his team operate a full line locksmith shop called Frank’s Key & Lock Shop. Frank was well known in the locksmith industry and equally known as the developer of several key machines. Many of us still have these machines in use today. Some may remember the Frank, Hank, and Bill Show. Not sure I remember the exact order of the names, but each had a segment of this national road show. It was the introduction of free locksmith education. Hank Spicer was best known for his automo-tive and impression skills, Bill Reed was all about automotive and codes. Frank Agius was best known for his code machines and how to make coded keys. The three of them were a “hoot”, to say the least. Unfortunately, none of these great men are still with us today, although they have left us their great leg-acy. Phil and his siblings carry on Frank’s vision and traditions into the 2nd generation, still housed in Alpena, Michigan. Frank’s Key & Lock Shop does offer everything a full-scale lock shop would provide. Along with locks and keys, Frank’s also sell knives and a few swag items. Frank’s also has a door division where they fabricate and sell Pioneer hollow metal doors and frames, Five Lakes wood doors (based in Clinton Township), and distribute various lines of hardware. Many buildings in that area have non-standard door openings and Frank’s is equipped to meet all those needs. They are also certified to install and service automatic doors and are the Horton Automatics distributor for an eight-county area. In addition to the locksmithing, Frank’s houses the internationally known company, Framon Manufacturing. This is where the Framon code cutting machines are manufactured. I am absolutely sure most of you reading this currently have, have had, or know someone who has a Framon key ma-chine. Those key machines seem to last forever. That’s because Frank often referred to himself as a machinist, not a locksmith. He BUILT those machines to last. Little did he know how right he was. The latest development in the evolution in the Franks Locksmith building is the incorporation of Blue Dog Keys. Liam Gribbens passed unexpectedly several years ago. Liam was an icon for his knowledge of hard-to-find and unique key blank assortments. After his passing, Framon picked up where Liam left off. Phil shows inventory of his isles of hard-to-find key blanks and unique key blank assortments. Blue Dog Keys is a distributor in this niche market. These key blanks are available for locksmiths to purchase (BDK does not sell to the general public). And, if I am not mistaken, I believe Phil continues the tradition of enclosing a couple Trivial Pursuit cards in every order that leaves his fa-cility. The LSA is proud to have Phil Agius as a member of the Locksmith Security Association of Michigan (LSA).

In Memoriam
Thomas Peloso (1923-2019)
The Locksmith Security Association of Michigan (LSA) extends its heartfelt con-dolences to the family of Tom Peloso, CML. Tom was an accomplished locksmith and safecracker. He was very active in the LSA and supported locksmith education and the locksmith industry in its entirety. Tom attended many ALOA national conventions and surrounded himself with many locksmith friends. Tom gave a second opportunity to many, teaching the locksmith trade for many students reentering the job market. Tom was always very generous with his time and resources. Some of the newer LSA members perhaps don’t know Tom, but Tom was an in-strumental Board member and actively took part in the doings of the LSA. While looking up Tom’s memorial visitation, Gary Garrett’s obituary also appears. Many LSA members knew Gary, as well. http://thompsonfuneralhomedetroit.com/gary-wayne-garrett/ Gary preceded in death just before Tom and was Tom’s caregiver for the last many years.
Visitation was held: Sunday, September 22, 2019
