1600’s European Visitors• 1622 French Explorer Etienne

Brule is the first to visit.

• 1634 Jean Nicolet paddles onto Michigama meaning

“great lake”.

• 1668 Jacques Marquette builds a mission which is the first

European settlement in Michigan.

• 1680 Fur trade begins to flourish in the Great Lake area.

1700 - 1800• 1701 Antoine de la Cadillac builds a fort where

Detroit is now located.

• 1787 Congress combines land from what is now Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota to form the Northwest Territory.

• 1800 Michigan becomes part of the Indiana Territory.

• 1805 Congress creates the Territory of Michigan with Detroit as its capital.

1800’s•1813 Lewis Cass becomes Michigan’s territorial governor.

•1817 John Jacob Astor founds the American Fur Company on Mackinac Island.

1800’s•1835 The Territory of Michigan and the

state of Ohio fight over ownership of a band of land call the “Toledo Strip”. Ohio receives the strip and Michigan gains the western

Upper Peninsula.

1837• On January 26, 1837, Michigan becomes the 26th

state to be admitted to the Union.

•1844-45 The copper and iron mining boom begins in the Upper Peninsula.
