Michigan - FY2018 AmeriCorps State and National Grant Awards Corporation for National and Community Service
As a result of the FY2018 AmeriCorps State and National Grant Competition, Michigan will receive a total of $10,452,606 in funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and other national service programs. Through this competition, nine successful grantees operating in Michigan will receive $4,497,316 in competitive funding from CNCS to support approximately 506 AmeriCorps members. After successfully completing their service, these AmeriCorps members are expected to earn $2,065,689 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards, a post-service benefit that can be used to cover the costs of post-secondary education or help pay back qualified student loans. The Michigan Community Service Commission, the Governor-appointed state service commission, will also receive $3,889,601 in non-competitive formula funding, which will in turn be awarded to Michigan organizations to support additional AmeriCorps members in the coming months. The $10.5 million investment from CNCS will leverage an additional $7,917,146 in matching funds – further increasing the return on the federal investment. The following table displays the FY2018 AmeriCorps funding breakdown for Michigan, including the full list of successful AmeriCorps grantees. The Michigan Community Service Commission will administer grants operating within the Michigan state borders; CNCS will administer grants operating in multiple states.

times more likely to graduate high school. To address this challenge, Michigan Education Cops is
dedicated to helping K-3 students develop a strong foundation in literacy. At 70 Michigan elementary
schools, AmeriCorps members will provide individualized, one-on-one tutoring to K-3rd grade
students, tailoring services to each child to build their literacy skills. As a direct result of AmeriCorps

Program Summary:
AmeriCorps members serving with the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH) will
provide direct services to individuals experiencing or at-risk of homelessness through over a dozen
homeless service agencies across the state of Michigan. AmeriCorps members will complete an
assessment of client housing needs and identify their housing barriers; assist in placing clients in
housing by creating and maintaining lists of available housing for clients to utilize; assist clients in
viewing potential housing; and assist in the lease-signing process. These services will allow individuals
to increase their ability obtain and maintain safe, healthy, and affordable housing. By the end of the
first program year, AmeriCorps members will provide affordable housing services to a total of 2,400
individuals—240 of whom will obtain and maintain safe, affordable housing. To multiply their impact,
AmeriCorps members will leverage 400 volunteers to provide services to the economically
disadvantaged as well as participate in service projects. Research indicates that comprehensive
affordable housing services, like those provided by MCAH, leads to increased housing retention rates,
lower returns to homelessness, and a significant reduction in the use of crisis services in the target

Service Area: Greater Metropolitan Detroit, MI.
Program Summary:
City Year AmeriCorps members form positive, developmental relationships with students, encourage
them to come to school every day, and provide evidence-based academic and social-emotional
supports for students who exhibit one or more “early warning indicators:” low attendance, poor
behavior or course failure in English language arts or mathematics. Research shows that preventing
one or more of these warning signs makes it three times more likely that a student will graduate,
dramatically improving his or her lifetime trajectory. City Year Detroit will engage AmeriCorps
members in service to economically disadvantaged and at-risk students at 11 high need public schools
in Detroit. AmeriCorps members will support English and math classes serving 1,875 students, and
provide individualized tutoring, mentoring, and progress monitoring services to 855 at-risk students.
Of the 855 students tutored, 163 will demonstrate improved English skills, 163 will demonstrate
improved math skills, and 106 will demonstrate improved attendance rates. To multiply their impact,
AmeriCorps members will leverage 500 community volunteers. City Year has proven to be effective: a
randomized controlled trial of Diplomas Now—a City Year initiative—found that schools partnering
with City Year significantly reduced the number of students at risk of dropping out.
