Obtaining your license is one of the most gratifying moments in your life. Getting your driver’s license in Michigan is a relatively simple process that only requires that you prepare slightly before you begin. Fortunately, understanding everything you need to know to get your license in Michigan will only take a small amount of your time. All Drivers Roads are not always safe. Therefore, it is in your best interest to fully prepare for whatever may come your way before you
begin driving. When you operate a motor vehicle, you not only take on the responsibility for your safety, but you also take on
Page 7 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
the responsibility of the safety of your passengers and all passengers in the vehicles around you. In order to best prepare
yourself to take on that responsibility, it is always wise to first obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) to be able to learn to drive properly.
If you would like to understand how to obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), please read the steps below:

one before taking your driving test to obtain your driver’s
license.

Vision ExamGetting your vision checked before you obtain your learner’s
permit or driver’s license is essential to ensure that you are
physically capable of driving. The exam is straightforward
and will require that you have a minimum vision of 20/40
for an unrestricted license. Those with vision less than
20/50 may be given a restricted license or may be denied
a license altogether depending on their visual acuity. If you
would like, you can also go to a doctor to have your eyes
tested and have the doctor fill out the Vision Specialist
Statement of Examination file.
Physical ExamIt is important that you meet certain physical standards in
order to obtain your driver’s license, as your physical status
can have a major effect in the way you drive. This is exactly
why the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) will also require
that you meet certain physical standards in order to qualify
to obtain your driver’s license.
The physical exam will consist of you answering some basic
health questions. As long as your answers demonstrate
that you are capable of safely operating a vehicle, you are
able obtain your driver’s license.
Written ExamBefore obtaining your learner’s permit, you need to take a
written exam. This exam may seem intimidating, but once
you understand the process, it will be less frightening to
you. In order to prepare for the written exam, you have
to review all information regarding driver safety, traffic laws and road signs. If you are 18 years or older and are
applying for your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), you
will need to take the exam at a Secretary of State (SOS)
office. All the information you need to prepare for the test can be found here.

process for obtaining a driver’s license as a teen involves

If you have gone through the steps of getting your learner’s permit in Michigan, then you are now one step closer to obtaining your driver’s license. To learn more about how to obtain your first Michigan driver’s license, review the following sections.
Driving Test Taking a driving test is necessary in order for the SOS to determine your driving skills level. The first part of the exam, which includes a safety check, will show the examiner that you are able to determine if your vehicle is safe to drive. When you go to
take your driving test, you are required to provide a vehicle that is insured and passes the safety requirements.
Driving skills tests are administered by independent testing organizations that have been previously approved by the Secretary
of State (SOS). You may find available testing sites by phone at 1-888-767-6424 or by clicking here or here.

If you would like, you are allowed to bring an interpreter to
help translate the driving test instructions. If you require a
sign language interpreter, you are allowed to bring along
your own interpreter or the SOS can provide you with a list
of free interpreters. You may contact the SOS at 1-888-

The road test will consist of three different parts.
Remember that you must provide your own vehicle to take
the driving test. If you fail any of the parts of the driving
test, you will fail the test and be allowed to retake it after
24 hours.
Vehicle InspectionThis the first part of the driving test. During this part, the
examiner will inspect and make sure that it functions
properly and is not a risk to you or any passengers.
Parts of the car that must work include the:
Brakes
Being able to properly adjust your seat, mirror
and seatbelt before driving.Horn
Tires
Windshield Wipers and washers
Lights
Obeying traffic signs and signals. Mirrors
Doors
Using your turn signals.Seat Belts
Speedometer
If your vehicle does not pass inspection, you must address
all issues the examiner found and bring it back another day
to conduct the driving test.
Basic Control SkillThe second part of the test will be conducted off the
road and will consist of showing the examiner basic
skills by performing necessary standards, such as
putting the car in final position, making a Y-turn, parallel
parking, etc.
Driving TestIf you pass the first two parts, you may now move to the last part of the driving test, which will take place on the
road. A few of the necessary skills you need to perform
while driving on the road will include:
Page 16 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
For the driving test, you will not be required to know
anything beyond the standard knowledge and skill on
how to operate a vehicle. To better prepare yourself for
the necessary skills you will need to showcase during
the test, review the Michigan Road Skills Test Study
Guide.
If you fail any part of the driving test, you are required to
reschedule to retake it again from the beginning, but you
only have one attempt every 24 hours.
Adult Drivers: Never Had a Driver’s License
Getting a license for first-time drivers is a simple process in the state of Michigan. In order to obtain your license, you
must first apply for a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) and follow these steps:
Make an appointment to take the driving test.
Provide proof of your driving test Certificate of Completion.
Take and pass a driving test.
Provide proof of your Social Security Number
(SSN) or legal immigration status.
Visit an SOS office.
Reversing, turning parking, yielding, etc.
Responding appropriately to emergency
vehicles.
Page 17 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
Provide TWO proofs of Michigan residency.
Provide TWO proofs of your identity.
Be aware that before you are able to take a driving skills
test, you must practice driving for at least 30 days with a
licensed adult.
All other acceptable documents to provide proof of your
identity, residency, legal presence or Social Security
Number (SSN) can be found here.
Once you complete the above steps, you will be given a
temporary license until your first Michigan driver’s license arrives in the mail in about three weeks.
After you receive your license, you will be on
probation for a minimum of three years. During this
probation period, you must not have any tickets, at-
fault crashes or suspensions in the last 10 months of
the probationary period. Otherwise, the period will be
extended until you complete 10 months without any
driving violations.
After you complete probation, you still are required
to go through a post-probation period in which the
SOS will continue to monitor you. If you obtain 9
points or more on your license, become involved in
a car crash, receive a ticket for an alcohol-related
incident or become involved in any at fault crashes,
you will be called in for a driver assessment
reexamination.
Any points you receive during your probation or post-
probation period will not be erased automatically.
Instead, they will remain on your record for two years
after the date of the conviction. This is why it is
important to drive safely and avoid issues with your
license or driving during both the probation and post-
probation periods.
Visit a Secretary of State (SOS) office.
Take a physical test.
Provide TWO proofs of Michigan residency
Provide your out-of-state license for invalidation.

Adult Drivers: New Resident

a driver’s license.

these steps:
Page 18 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
All Michigan licenses expire after a certain amount of time and must be renewed. Before you renew your license, however, you must understand the process so that you can avoid any potential issues. To begin, you must remember that a Michigan driver’s license expires on your birthday every four years, unless you are younger than 21, in which case your license will expire once you turn 21. Fortunately, Michigan allows you to renew your license either by mail, online or in person.
When your driver’s license is about to expire, you will receive a renewal notice from the SOS. The notice typically arrives by mail
about 45 days before the expiration day. The notice will state whether or not you are allowed to renew your license by the mail.
If you are not allowed to do so, you will need to go to the SOS office in person to renew it.
If you renew your license after the expiration date has passed, you will need to pay a late fee of $7 in addition to the regular
renewal fee of $18.
If you begin to experience any type of physical or mental condition that could affect your driving, you will be required to renew
your license at the SOS office and take along a Physician’s Statement of Examination and Vision Specialists Statement of
Examination file filled out.

extension, you may drive with an expired license during the
approved time period. In general, you are able to receive
an extension up to 180 days. However, the length of the
extension will ultimately depend on your situation. Once
you return to Michigan, it is recommended that you renew
your driver’s license as soon as possible.
If you plan to be out of state for more than 180 days, you can
renew your license by mail if you are eligible. Renewing by
mail may take up to six weeks, so make sure you begin the
process before your license expires. Otherwise, you will have

Before getting behind the wheel, it is important for your vehicle to be prepared for any trip. This means checking the safety features and making any needed changes to your vehicle to guarantee a safe drive.
Emergency Kit One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include
items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kit, matches and a whistle. During the winter months, it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Safety Tips

Winter Driving One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows or is prone to ice.
Consider these tips below to drive safely during the winter.
Avoid Rushing
Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows. Instead of driving fast and risking an accident as you hurry
to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive more slowly and
avoid other dangerous drivers without being late to your destination.
Do Not Panic If You Skid or Slip
In the event that your vehicle skids or slips while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes.
Instead, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out
of control.
Check Your Vehicle
Before you leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tires and antifreeze are all in working order. It
is also important that you remove any ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow
from blocking your view while you drive or flying off and hitting someone while you are in motion.
Page 34 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
Drinking and DrivingEvery year, thousands are killed as a result of drinking and
driving. These events can be prevented. It only requires
that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps.
Before you begin drinking, arrange for someone else to
be the designated driver. If that person also becomes
intoxicated, it is important that you take a taxi. If you
see someone you suspect is drunk and showing signs
of intoxication while driving, such as making wide turns,
weaving, swerving, braking erratically or turning abruptly,
call 911 and contact authorities immediately. Also, make
sure to avoid the driver on the road to ensure your own
safety. This could mean pulling over until the driver is at a
safe distance from your car.
Using Your Phone Driving while using your cell phone is one of the most
dangerous actions you can take. During the few seconds
that your attention is diverted to your phone, a major
accident could easily occur. Make sure you do not text, use
the internet or make phone calls while you are driving to
prevent accidents as best as possible.
Things To Avoid Driving is not always a relaxing experience. There are
certain actions that can be both an annoyance and
dangerous to you while driving on the road. These things
are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary
steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them
after you discover them.
Car Accidents
One way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your
vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems.
To do this, regularly check that your brakes are functioning
properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are checked by a mechanic.
Wasting Gas
If you drive often, start looking for ways to save on
Page 35 | MyDriver-Licenses.org
expensive trips to the pump. Saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps toward ensuring you save some money in the
long run.
Some of the ways that you can start saving gas are turning off the air conditioning, not leaving your engine running or speeding
above 60 mph. These action are preventable and not necessary for you to drive. By avoiding them, you can easily reduce the
amount of gas your vehicle uses.
Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires
are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned and your octane level is the correct amount to your vehicle’s needs.
Aggressive Driving
Aggressive driving and aggressive drivers should both be avoided to prevent on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive
driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as tailgating, verbal or physical harassment towards another driver, or
preventing another driver from merging or passing.
If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you partake in any of the above behaviors. When you
encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment, breathe and continue moving.
