Michigan District Optimist

International Newsletter

4th Quarter Edition

Dear Fellow Optimists,

By the time you receive this our current Optimist year will be almost over. And for me that does not seem possible. Many good things have transpired but we still have time and excellent and exciting opportunities to “finish strong” in our year of Connecting the Dots of Optimism!

If you have not heard there is a NEW MEMBER contest going on. The Michigan Optimist that brings in the most new members (including regaining past mem-bers) between June 1st and September 30th, 2019 will win 2 tickets to the Michi-gan State vs Michigan football game, November 16, 2019 played in the “Big House” in Ann Arbor. The member who brings in the second most will win $200.00 in cash.

In addition, anyone bringing in a new member will have his or her name placed in a drawing for $100.00 in cash (one entry for each new member). Sorry first and second place winners will not be eligible for the $100.00 drawing. In case of a tie I will “cut the cards” to determine the winner.

Winners will be notified by October 15th and announced and awarded at the first quarter conference on November 2nd, 2019.

The Mighty Michigan District is down in membership and this is the time to go out there and ask your friends and family to join the best service group in the world! And remember, Elaine Lyon, NOW Chair and Membership Chairs Dan Mills and Sue Kardasz are standing by to help you bring new members in.

On several positive notes, to date the Michigan District has built 3 New Clubs (there is still time to build more). We have had three successful conferences with record breaking numbers by “First Timers “.

Our Essay, Oratorical and Junior Golf Contests have given us positive evidence of the talented young people that are in our communities. And our JOI Clubs prove that volunteering and making a difference is not just for adults.

Our generous Optimist members are to be congratulated, in Farmington many participated in the annual Childhood Health and Wellness Walk. The support of the Foundation continues, and the donation goal is not only in sight it is also with-in reach.

We are preparing for our August convention in Bay City where Nicole Paquette, Optimist International Board of Director, will be our guest and Keynote Speaker. I hope you will plan to attend and show our guest a warm Michigan welcome.

I would also like to share, how honored I was to attend of the Michigan State House of Representatives’ recognition the 100th Anniversary of Optimist Interna-tional on June 19th with the passing of House Resolution #129. My sincere thanks to the honorable Terry Sabo, the honorable Andrea Schroeder and Legislative Di-rector for Fraser Consultants, Scott Everett for making this happen. And my thanks to all Michigan Optimist who took the time to attend.

In closing, I want to thank each of you for your support throughout this year. It is greatly appreciated.

I remain, Optimistically yours

The year is winding down and our 4th Quarter Convention is only a couple of months away, August 23-25. I have a few requests of all the Club officers. First, if you have not sent in your Club Officer-Elect reports, please take care of that as soon as you finish your elections. Thanks to all who have sent in the form.

Second, please send in your 4th Quarter registrations by the due date! Take advantage of the savings you get. It will also make it easier to report numbers to the Hotel conference center. I appre-ciate it!

And last, please make sure your dues are current, which ensures the smooth flow of funds available to the Michigan District and Optimist International. Remember that awards to Clubs and members can only be given to those clubs who are current with their dues. Thanks to all who have paid timely and thanks to all Lt. Governors who have helped.

It has been an honor serving as your District Secretary/Treasurer along with Governor Ted. I’m really looking forward to our con-vention in August in Bay City. Hope to see you there!

Thank you, Cathy

Hello Michigan District Optimists,

As the Michigan District Board of Directors gathered over

an early dinner in a vintage house to host our first meeting

for the 2019-2020-year, excitement was in the air. After

the successes we had in the past year with the annual

Spring convention, with all its engaging breakout sessions

and interesting creative projects, we were eager to do

even better. We had fun designing break-out sessions for

the convention such as, “The Art of Punology,” “How to

become a [district] Officer,” and, “Optimism: A Jigsaw Puz-

zle.” While we all were proud of the accomplishments of

the past year of JOI, there was a consensus that we could

improve in certain areas, particularly involving communi-

cation.

Turnout at the Spring Convention was weak, which we felt

was mainly due to communication issues between the JOI

district and the individual JOI clubs. In our eyes, the out-

dated communication lists of JOI clubs, often listing former

JOI advisers and decommissioned email-addresses, was a

major factor hindering our ability to transmit district infor-

mation to JOI clubs. Given the number of JOI clubs

throughout the lower peninsular of the State of Michigan,

this will be a tough task, yet we will challenge ourselves in

accomplishing it. In fact, most JOI members in attendance

came from Southeast Michigan, a small sliver of the state

we represent. To address these issues within the future,

we intend on updating these communication lists, thereby

streamlining the whole communications process.

Additionally, we are intending on focusing on improving

intra-board communications. In general, we, as members

of Generation Z, need to check our email inboxes more

often to receive important information pertaining to dis-

trict level affairs. We will also communicate through group

-chatting apps such as GROUPME to really convey our mes-

sage.

Moreover, we have reformed certain confusing and con-

tradictory sections of the district bylaws to improve the

clarity of the policies/bylaws for the JOI Michigan District.

As for service projects, we are eager to perform projects

which directly help the welfare of children within the state

of Michigan. This can come in the form of book drives to

improve Michigan’s relatively low levels of childhood liter-

acy or fundraising to help the still suffering residents of

Flint. With all the changes we

are internally making within

the Michigan District board, we

hope to improve the welfare of

our friendly Michigander com-

munity.

Optimist International Foundation

Steve Sucher, District Foundation Representative

[email protected] (248) 930-4910

Thank you, Michigan District, for your continued support of Optimist International Foundation! $31,562 has been

raised in unrestricted contributions as of May 30th, from members and clubs, which is 64% of our $49,000 goal this

year. As the largest District in membership in all of Optimist International, the Michigan District is leading the way in

Women’s Philanthropy Council pink purses with 45, number of President Council members with 33, and Childhood

Wellness with 35 Centennial Coins being purchased. Thank you, Marc Katz, for all your efforts on the Centennial Coins!

And thank you to those that have supported the Silent Auctions at our District meetings.

I am pleased to announce the Michigan District earned the Dime-A-Day Trendsetter award! This award required the

Michigan District to exceed last year’s 200 Dime-A-Day contributors by 20 additional contributors. Thank you to those

that contributed again this year. We have at least 56 members that participated this year but not last year!

The Michigan District is very close to leading the way in Dime-A-Day and unrestricted contributions. We missed #1 by

3 contributors and $3,000 respectively. Being #2 is very respectable but I know the Michigan District can lead the way

and be #1 in these categories as well.

We are at the start of our 4th and final quarter of the Optimist year. We need to finish strong to meet our goal of

$49,000 in unrestricted contributions to the Foundation. Why is this goal so important? Contributing to the Optimist

International Foundation allows the Foundation to “help Optimists help youth”. The Foundation is supporting scholar-

ship opportunities (e.g. Oratorical, Essay, CCDHH) and club grants. Growing the contributions to the Foundation allows

the Foundation to grow their support of Optimists.

Numerous members and clubs choose to make their contributions to the Foundation in the 4th Quarter which is truly

appreciated. Many of these contributions are made at our District Convention. We will be having another Silent Auc-

tion. Members enjoy the 50/50 raffles. We will raffle one or more beautiful Christian D Larson Partner recognitions.

Named after the author of our Optimist Creed, this is a one-time unrestricted giving level of $1,000 in one year. We

will have a winner for every $1,000 raised!

Another way to donate for those that shop on Amazon, is to enroll on the AmazonSmile web site (smile.amazon.com).

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you

shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and

convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase

price (not including shipping, handling, or taxes) to your favorite charitable organization such as Optimist Internation-

al Foundation. You will see eligible products marked "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" on their product detail pag-

es. For more information about the AmazonSmile program, go to http://smile.amazon.com/about. The AmazonSmile

Foundation gets the credit for the donation.

I hope to see many of you at our 4th Quarter Michigan District Convention in Bay City!

MEMORIAL SERVICE

Now is the time to begin to finalize plans for our District’s annual Memorial Service. It will be held on Sunday, August 25th as part

of our annual convention at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bay City. This special service is our collective means of paying special hom-

age to members who have passed away during the 2018-2019 year. There will be an opportunity during the Memorial Service for a

member of your club to share brief words about the deceased member. Your assistance is needed in the following ways; email

[email protected] or call me (586) 306-2784 with the member name(s), the club name and the number of years of service

and words describing the member’s involvement at the club, district or international level, if appropriate. Please send this infor-

Girls on The Run, an international program for girls, is alive and well in Calhoun County, and the Optimist Club of Battle Creek is thrilled to be a sponsor for this organization every year. The mission of GOTR is to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curric-ulum which creatively integrates running.” This year’s event was held Friday, May 17 at the Harper Creek High School track. The event started out a little wet, but soon turned to sun and smiles as the approximately 400 girls came out in full force. The Optimist Club of Battle Creek hosted a pre-race inspiration station for the participants. The club provided craft supplies for the girls to create their own personal bookmarks, including laminating the bookmarks so the girls could have them for years to come.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the pres-

ence of trouble.

“By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in youth, our communities & ourselves.”
