Klondike Challenge 2017

The Klondike Challenge originated as a race on the AuSable River

from Grayling to Burton’s Landing, but the event was moved to

Oscoda’s Van Etten Creek in 1996. The Klondike marks the

“Season Kickoff” for the Michigan Canoe Racing season, and serves

as a friendly, spirited sprint event before the MCRA’s Annual Mem-

bership Meeting. Paddlers and race fans use the event to catch-up

with race friends after a long winter offseason, and to get a sneak

peek at the racers for the upcoming sea-

son (or to see who has been training dur-

ing the winter!). Originally a race held in

late January or February, it is now held

annually in late winter or early spring. In

recent years, the Klondike Challenge has

become an AuSable River Canoe Marathon

fundraising event, incorporating a 5K/10K

Run/Walk into the weekend’s festivities.

The event is organized by the AuSable Riv-

er International Canoe Marathon Com-

mittee, and hosted in conjunction with the

Michigan Canoe Racing Association. Pad-

dlers and runners of all ages and talent

levels are welcome to enter. See you

there!

This season is already gearing up to be a good

one. Warm weather has many training early in

the season. The MCRA this year is working

hard to promote youth in the sport, with a

series of junior and mentor races, plus a 19 &

under bonus in the C-1 races. Not to leave

the older paddlers out, we are continuing to

promote an age group bonus in races with

more than 4 C-1 paddlers over 70. The MCRA

is also working to promote women in canoe

racing with a C-2 mixed racing purse at Ann

Arbor, a women’s C-2 race, and multiple wom-

en’s C-1 races. Mt. Clemens is planning to

host again after missing 2016, and new this

year is the Paddle for a Cure race in Hastings,

MI to support the battle against Huntington’s

Disease. If you would like input on any of

these decisions, please attend the annual

meeting after the Klondike, where the mem-

bership approves the schedule. See you on

the water! —Rebecca Davis
