The Growing “Inactivity” Epidemic

It’s no secret - we have a childhood obesity epidemic in the U.S…

• In 2000, 15% of children and adolescents were overweight… that’s 3 times the proportion in 1980 (CDC)

…but did you know that one of the leading causes is actually an inactivity epidemic?

Page 17: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

How Many Steps – BMI Referenced Standards*

• How much activity separates normal weight from overweight/obese children

• 12,000 steps for girls

• 15,000 steps for boys

• Converted to time…– 107 minutes for girls– 137 minutes for boys

*Tudor-Locke, C., et.al. (2004). BMI-referenced standards for recommended pedometer-determined steps/day in children. Preventative Medicine, in press.

Brain Development

• Music, rhythm, repetitive practice of patterns … using balance and eye-tracking are all powerful tools for physical and mental learning.

Vanessa Sluming, University of Liverpool, 2002, UK

Page 21: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

• To improve our brains, we have to move our bodies… Exercises involving learning a series of complex movements while coordinating one’s balance have been proven to generate a greater number of connections between neurons. These connections make it easier for children of all ages to learn.

John Ratey, Harvard Medical School, , 2001 & 2008

I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day . . . I’d rather one should walk with me than

merely show the way.

The eye is a better pupil and more willing than the ear. Fine

counsel is confusing, but examples always clear.

See A Sermon

I soon can learn to do it, if you’ll let me see it done. I can see your hands in action, but your

tongue too fast may run.

And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true, but

I’d rather get a lesson by observing what you do.

Don’t QUIT

• When things go wrong as they sometimes will, when the road you are trudging seems all uphill;

• When the funds are low and the debts are high and you want to laugh, but you have to cry.

• When life is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must, but please don’t QUIT.

Page 33: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

Don’t QUIT

Life is weird with it’s twists and turns as many of us sometimes learn.

Page 34: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

Don’t QUIT

• And many a failure turns about when you might have won had you stuck it out. So don’t give up though the pace seems slow, you may succeed with another blow.

Page 35: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

Don’t QUIT

• Success is failure turned inside out the silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And you never can tell how close you are. It may be near when it seems so far.

Page 36: Michiana Project-Coordinated School Health & “Secure Your Own Mask First!”

Don’t QUIT

• So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit…it’s when things seem worst that you must not QUIT!
