In the year 2019 (age 44), I will have been Michael Alao, CFE, CIA, CPA, JD, MBA, for

three years doing something in line with my values – i.e. attorney and/or educator.

Supposedly the job market for 40 year-old lawyers is not very good. I am hoping

that my combination of business experience and accounting and fraud-related

certifications might be attractive to a medium sized law firm. I might also enjoy an

opportunity with local and state government as a prosecutor for white-collar crimes.

Ultimately I may end up truly living my mission statement my being a public defender,

part-time adjunct instructor at a community college, and so in debt with student loans

that I will definitely have no choice but to live modestly in working-class neighborhoods.

SWOT Analysis

Strengths

I am highly analytical, structured, and organized. I listen well and ask questions.

I take a genuine interest in the views and opinions of others, which facilitates my ability

to elicit answers from people. I can evaluate a process, procedure, or argument, and

quickly identify the gaps and potential pitfalls. Although I do listen well, I am also highly

skeptical and do not accept many things at face value.

Weaknesses

I am an introvert and often avoid contacting people either in person or via

telephone. My preferred method of operating is via email, but I have found that people

of prior generations do not prefer this method of communication.

Opportunities

I recently took a position as the internal auditor for Cincinnati Public Schools.

Part of what attracted me to this position is that it is such a public position. My first day I

was publicly introduced at a school board meeting, and two weeks prior to that the

announcement of my hiring and salary were published in the local paper. I was

exhausted that first week – as an introvert I find social interaction very tiring, but now

have gotten over my reluctance to use the telephone. I further see this position as an

opportunity to become more comfortable in the public sphere, and to be comfortable in

a more visible position.

Threats

The economy is a very basic threat that undermines my ability to maintain a job

at my current income level. Accepting the position with the school district was in part to

become better known in the community, given the fact that at a high enough level of

employment the best jobs are no longer to be found on Monster.com, but rather through

networking. The hope is that my attendance at school board meetings, interaction with

faculty throughout the school district, and attending local area networking events will

allow me to build the sort of professional network that will be necessary in order to get

the type of positions that I may need or look for in the future.

Another threat related to my current position is that I may fail in my assigned

responsibilities. The school district has not had an internal auditor before, and being in

the public eye may turn out to be damaging in terms of reputation.
