SAFETY ISSUES - MOST OF THE SANDERS ANALISED CAME WITH A RUBBER GUARD FOR THE
FINGERS BUT NOT ENOUGH. INCREASED TEXTURE FOR A BETTER GRIP WOULD HELP AS WELL.

DERIVED FROM A NATURAL OCCURRENCE, RARELY CAPTURED BY THE NAKED EYE, THE SPLASH CHAIR CONCEPT
TAKES A PLAYFUL PLUNGE INTO A PROJECT THAT EXISTS IN PRODUCT DESIGN PROGRAMS EVERYWHERE. THROUGH
THE STUDY OF PHYSICAL, METAPHYSICAL, SUBCONSCIOUS, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONNECTIONS, THE SPLASH CHAIR
QUESTIONS THE FUNCTION-OVER-FORM MENTALITY EMBEDDED IN THE WORLD OF PRODUCT DESIGN.
PROCESSAFTER SELECTING A FINAL DIRECTION, I BEGAN EXPLORING FORM
POSSIBILITIES THROUGH CLAY MODEL STUDIES. WHILE REFINING THE
DIRECTION, I KEPT IN MIND THE ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS
OF A 50 PERCENTILE MALE IN A LOUNGE POSITION. THIS WAS TESTED
THROUGH A FOAM COMFORT STUDY PICTURED BELOW.
splash LOUNGE
PROCESS: ABOVE, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, THE FINAL CLAY MODEL WAS CUT INTO 1/4” SLICES WHICH WOULD REPRESENT 2” AT FULL SCALE. THE SLICES WERE THEN
SCANNED AND USED AS A TEMPLATE FOR PLOTTING THE FULL SCALE LAYERS. USING THE FULL SCALE PLOTS, 2” INSULATION FOAM WAS CUT AND ASSEMBLED TO
CREATE THE FULL SCALE MODEL. THE FOAM WAS SANDED UNTIL THE FINAL FORM WAS PERFECTED. FROM THERE, THE FORM WAS COATED WITH ELMERS GLUE TO
PROTECT THE FOAM FROM RESIN, THEN SPRAYED WITH CHOPPED FIBERGLASS, THEN BONDO. AFTER COUNTLESS HOURS OF SANDING, IT WAS READY FOR PAINT.

WHILE WORKING AT ORANGE22, I WORKED CLOSLEY WITH THE OWNER OF RED HEAT, VIRGINIA IRVINE.
THIS HEAT TRANSFER T-SHIRT DESIGN SHOP OPENED IN EARLY JANUARY 2008. THROUGH CLOSE
COMMUNICATION WITH VIRGINIA, AND THE MANUFACTURER, I ASSISTED IN THE DESIGN AND
MANAGED THE ASSEMBLY OF THIS 70’s INSPIRED INTERIOR.
INTERIOR STORE DESIGN
INTERIOR STORE DESIGNTHE CLIENT HAD A CLEAR MENTAL VISION OF HER STORE. SHE CAME TO ORANGE22 TO BRING HER
DREAM TO LIFE. THROUGH CLOSE COMMUNICATION WITH THE CLIENT, I WAS ABLE TO TRANSLATE
HER VISION TO PAPER. FROM THERE I DEVELOPED TECHNICAL DRAWINGS, WHICH WERE SENT TO THE
MANUFACTURER.

RED HEAT L.A. IS A NEW CONCEPT STORE INSPIRED BY VINTAGE HEAT TRANSFER SHOPS. USING ONE OF FOUR MAC WORKSTATIONS, CUSTOMERS
SELECT ORIGINAL GRAPHIC ARTWORK OR CREATE THEIR OWN CUSTOM DESIGN,THEN SELECT THE GARMENT. FROM THERE, THE DESIGN IS SUBMITTED, AND
THEY WITNESS THE SYNTHETIC, MELTY WAX PROCESS RIGHT BEFORE THEIR EYES.
FURNITURE CONVERSION THESIS PROJECT
THE BASIS FOR MY THESIS WAS SIMPLY AN EXPLORATION OF THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF CONVERTIBLE
FURNITURE IN DINING ENVIRONMENTS. RESEARCHING VARIOUS RESTURANTS IN THE CINCINNATI AREA,
SEVERAL DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES WERE DISCOVERED. THE DIRECTION TAKEN RESULTED IN A SOLUTION
THAT OFFERS PROSPEROUS BENEFITS FOR A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTS, NOT JUST A RESTURANT.
RESEARCH
THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR RESEARCH WAS HABITS CAFÉ IN OAKLEY, OH. HERE, THE ENVIRONMENT WAS EVALUATED. EMPLOYEES, THE MANAGER, AND THE OWNER WERE ALL INTERVIEWED. THROUGH MY
EXPLORATION, SEVERAL POTENTIAL DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES WERE DISCOVERED( BELOW).

THERE IS NO BAR ON THE LEFT SIDE. ON BUSY
NIGHTS, THEY SET UP A MOBLE BAR ON THIS SIDE
DIRECTION
IN ORDER TO INCREASE SALES, THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO LEGALLY FIT MORE PEOPLE. THIS CALLS FOR LESS FURNITURE, MORE
SPECIFICALLY, LESS PERMANENT FURNITURE. A FIRE MARSHAL WILL APPROVE A HIGHER OCCUPANCY IN A PLACE WITH ALL TABLES
AND CHAIRS THAN A PLACE WITH THE SAME SQUARE FOOTAGE BUT USING ALL BOOTHS AS SEATING. THESE BOOTHS ARE A PART OF
THE RESTAURANT’S CHARACTER AND AESTHETIC FEEL WHICH ADDS VALUE TO THEIR EXISTENCE. ADDITIONALLY, PEOPLE APPRECIATE
THE SENSE OF PRIVACY AND/OR INTIMACY THAT A BOOTH PROVIDES AS OPPOSED TO A TABLE AND CHAIRS WHICH ADDS IMPORTANCE
TO THE INCLUSION OF BOOTHS IN THIS TYPE OF ATMOSPHERE.
