Mrs. Murphy, Assistant PrincipalJoined Byrne Elementary School in 2017 as an Assistant Principal and have been with CPS for over 21 years.

Fun Facts:

■ I am a National Board Certified Teacher in mathematics. ■ I love anything related to math: statistics, finance, correlations, etc.■ My passion is connecting people to resources, ideas, and possibilities. Dream big!■ I love my job working with the staff, students, and families of Chicago.■ Things on my bucket list include: traveling by RV cross-country, taking an Alaskan cruise, and

spending time with my family on vacations all over the world.

Welcome to Byrne Elementary

During Remote learning schools and educators are expected to:1. Use the Google Education Suite to facilitate remote learning.2. Provide daily remote learning that meets instructional minute requirements for all content

areas or courses for all students. Ensure all educators are available to provide live video instruction and are synchronously available to students during the entirety of the contract day.

3. Focus on grade-level, standards-aligned instruction and students’ social-emotional needs.4. Submit and monitor student attendance daily.5. Ensure all students have digital access.6. Student Expectations

We know that in order for students to be successful, they should follow a consistent schedule and have a quiet work space.

This will help them during remote learning, and it will also help them when we transition back to school.

It is with these best practices in mind that we have created our Michael M. Byrne Elementary School Remote Learning Expectations.

Student Expectations

● Be on time● Keep their video on - students must be live on

camera (no avatars)● Students should attend synchronous classes● Students attend asynchronous classes● Students must have teeth and hair brushed● Students should be in a quiet, well-lit area,

sitting vertically, not lying on beds or under covers and wearing learning day clothes

● Students view recorded videos before deadlines

● Not required but helpful to the student - noise cancelling headphones (available at Best Buy, Amazon... for $25 with a mic)

● Have water nearby (optional)● Refrain from eating during class until

Ms. RosasHello everyone! My name is Ms. Rosas (Nomikos). This is my 9th year of teaching. I am so excited to enter the world of Reading with your child. I have four kids and five dogs. So I completely understand your needs to juggle school with home. This year will be filled with many adventures and I hope that we can bring joy and laughter as we travel through these unique times together!

I love to dance, listen to all genres of music, and explore new cultures! I love to spread positive energy through my teaching and give students the tools they need to love learning.

My name is Mrs. Long and I will be your child’s teacher. This is my 28th year of teaching and most of those years are teaching math. My husband is also a teacher in CPS and I have a 12 year old son. There is so much excitement approaching us as we think about new students to meet, math games to play, songs to sing, new activities and concepts to master, etc…. and I look forward to you sharing in all of these exciting times. “

Ms. BetzHi everyone! My name is Ms. Betz. This is my 9th year teaching, 6th year at Byrne. I am super excited to be your child’s Social Studies and Science teacher.

I have an 8 month old baby girl, MacKenzie, and a 7 year old dog, BamBam.

From 2013-2015: I lived and taught English in Taiwan for 2.5 years. I love different cultures and traditions. Feel free to share with me about your culture!

Ms. Rosas - English Language Arts (ELA)❖ ELA classwork will consist of grammar mini lessons, spelling and vocabulary

study, short story and novel texts, independent reading, assessments, note taking, and group work.

❖ The grammar mini lessons will rotate each week with the spelling and vocabulary word study.

❖ Homework will be given daily and will be due the following day. ❖ In addition to weekly homework, it is extremely important that each student

reads at home for a minimum of 100 minutes each week! ➢ Reading at home helps to reinforce the skills and strategies taught in school➢ Reading at home also helps to reinforce positive silent reading strategies➢ These reading logs will be posted weekly every Monday and will be due by the

following Monday.➢ I encourage this reading to NOT be digital.

information clearly.➢ Narrative Pieces- develop real or imagined experiences or events - using

effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.❖ Writers will work throughout the year to develop their writing by

following the writing process and working together to edit written pieces.

★ During Remote Learning IXL will be assigned to the students within the Google Classroom. When we are In-person (at school) IXL will be used nightly. The students are expected to complete 60 minutes of IXL a week on a given topic. It starts on Monday and due Sunday. ○ The level and topic will be assigned to the students.

❖ If a student chooses to ignore these rules and regulations, he or she will only be allowed to observe and record data.

Homework and Late Homework

➢ Expect homework each night! ➢ Homework is essential:

○ allows the students to have extra practice to reinforce what they learned in class

○ will be checked daily○ Please check their homework for accuracy each night.

➢ Late homework is accepted and will be given full credit if and ONLY IF A CHILD HAS BEEN ABSENT. Your child will have the same number of days absent to make up their homework.

Attendance and Absences❏ It is extremely important for your student to be at school every day

promptly at 7:45 am due to the rotation of classes in 5th grade. One missed class = 90 minutes of lost learning.

❏ When your student is absent from school, you need to call the office before 7:45 am. One missed day = 300 minutes lost.

❏ Upon return, the office requires a written note explaining the reason for the absence. If no note is sent, it will be considered an unexcused absence.

During virtual learning you may email your absence notes to the teacher, and we will forward it to the office.

- This is my 3rd year at Byrne- I’m a big fan of Chicago’s best baseball

team… The White Sox- I coach High School baseball- I am the Athletic Director at Byrne- I love all sports!!

● Classes will be run through Google Classroom and Google Meet.

● Start to think of open spaces where you will be able to participate in some workouts.
