WhAT DOES CITY nATIOnAL BAnk OFFER TO SMALL BuSInESS OWnERS? SBA programs are many and varied, and the qualifications for each are specific. CnB can help facilitate an SBA loan for you. understanding how SBA works is the first step towards receiving assistance. SBA provides a number of financial assistance programs for small businesses that have been specifically designed to meet key financing needs of small business owners.

SBA does not make direct loans to small businesses. Rather, SBA sets the guidelines for loans, which are then made by its partners like City national Bank, community development organizations, and micro lending institutions. The SBA guarantees that these loans will be repaid, thus eliminating some of the risk to the lending partners. When a business applies for an SBA loan, it is actually applying for a commercial loan, structured according to SBA requirements with an SBA guaranty. SBA-guaranteed loans may not be made to a small business if the borrower has access to other financing on reasonable terms. SBA loans are generally up to $5M and for up to 25 years.

SBA loan guaranty requirements and practices can change as the government alters its fiscal policy and priorities to meet current economic conditions. Therefore, you can’t rely on past policy when seeking assistance in today’s market. however, here are some questions you should be prepared to answer when applying for an SBA loan:

how many years has the business been in existence?

how many employees does the business have?

What is the business’ estimated annual revenue?

What is the business type?

What is the total amount of financing that you are seeking?

how will you use the money?

Is collateral available to support the loan?

Do you have a written business plan?

sba generally does not specify what businesses are eligible. Rather, the agency outlines what businesses are not eligible. There are some universally applicable requirements to be eligible for assistance:

» Operate for profit

» Be engaged in, or propose to do business in, the united States or its possessions

» have reasonable invested equity

» use alternative financial resources, including personal assets, before seeking financial assistance

» Be able to demonstrate a need for the loan proceeds

» use the funds for a sound business purpose

» not be delinquent on any existing debt obligations to the u.S. government

gET TO KNOw YOur fOLLOwErSTry to learn as much as possible about your followers and those who talk about your company. You might want to track conversations through analytics tools such a hootsuite. You can also work with a social media consultant to help you identify online influencers actively engaging with your brand, and the best channels and dates through which to approach current and potential clients.

QuALITY NOT QuANTITYPrioritize reaching out to your most loyal fans. Make an effort to tend to your relationship with them, treating it much like a real-life friendship. Remember, a loyal following takes time to build. Focus on building a fan base that will stay with you for the long haul and even potentially viralize your message by word-of-mouth, instead of blindly throwing big buck at a brand new marketing campaign.

PLAN AHEAD Of TIMECreate a content calendar so that you don’t miss a beat. Take advantage of holidays and niche celebrations such as Gay Pride, Coming Out Day, or Anti-Bullying Day. If you’re a small bookstore, make sure to be active on social media during Banned Books Week.

BE INTErAcTIVEPost content that engages your followers. Think of social media as a platform to collect valuable insight on client experiences, opinions, and feelings. Don’t be afraid to take risks or jump on viral trends. Live Q&As and contests are your best friends.

rEAcT QuIcKLYuse social media as a supplement to your customer service. Make an effort to respond quickly to praises or complaints. Dialog is critical to the success of any business, and social media can certainly serve as an important asset in keeping your customers happy.

spotlight InterviewLIzET TE GARCIA

we always start our interviews by asking you to provide us with a bit of personal background.

I am a Miami native. “American made in Cuba.” My mother was 5 months pregnant with me when they left Cuba with my siblings and made their way to the Sunshine State. It did not matter what I wanted to be, as long as I was a good person and lived my true happiness according to my parents. That is love, that is acceptance, and that builds core. Who I am every day in this world is how I measure success.

I got into the beverage industry by accident and shortly thereafter knew I had a passion for it. I have been fortunate to work for some of the best companies and people in the industry, each paving the way for the next chapter. I have passion for this business and it is a way of life for me, kind of like working out and eating healthy. It’s every day.

Today, it’s all about ThE Vodka. I have been with Stoli Group uSA since January 2014 when

the company went live in the uS. In addition to Stoli Premium and flavours we produce the world’s first super-premium luxury spirit, elit by Stolichnaya. We also just brought “America’s Rum” into the house of Stoli, an incredible new series of four rum spirits called Bayou Rum — hand crafted in Louisiana — which hopefully opens the door to interacting with and embracing an even wider demographic as Stoli.

You have been in the beverage industry for a number of years… what makes the South florida market so unique?

South Florida’s weather is a natural answer but it is so much more than that. Most people are transplants from all over. The various cultures creating the melting pot that comes alive in the streets of South Florida are none other than electrifying. It’s kind of like an island wrapped up in a magical city, so you get the best of both worlds.

Working in the beverage industry here enables me to meet a diverse group of buyers and customers alike. The Miami market specifically is known as the Test Market Capital since many from all over the world come to launch their new ideas and brands. I get to explore new culinary and beverage concepts keeping my palette very entertained while inspiring to create multilayered cocktails and pairings.

As an ally of the LgBT market, what makes supporting diversity so important to you?

This goes back to a personal choice and that word again, acceptance. South Florida is no stranger to the LGBT community. I have personally seen so much love and support throughout the years even before the spotlight and conversation started. I am proud to know that I am part of a community like this. While there is much more work to do, my hope is that we continue to thrive for acceptance in its purest form so people can live in a safe environment being the fabulous person they are meant to be in their authentic way.

Stoli uSA is the Vodka sponsor of this year’s Miami Beach gay Pride Event… what makes this event worthy of your brand support?

We are thrilled and honored to be part of such a celebration of people and life. Miami Beach Gay Pride has come a long way since its inception 8 years ago. What was once viewed by 20,000 is now 130,000 plus in attendance!

Miami Beach Gay Pride provides a platform to multiply our authentic LGBT efforts to create brand awareness and support our local retailers, bars, restaurants and hotels. Additionally, as with many spirits brands, millennials are a key target audience, but with Stolichnaya all ages and demographics are considered important to the Stoli family as inclusivity is key to our company standards.

As the presenting sponsor we look forward to great activations throughout SFL. We are delighted to work with the other sponsors, MDGLCC, Miami Beach Gay Pride and most importantly the core LGBT anchor accounts in Miami Beach: Twist, Score, Gaythering hotel and The Palace. Together, anything is possible and we are grateful to them all.

Miami Beach Gay Pride is April 8 – 10. kicking off the weekend is the VIP Reception at the W South Beach on Friday, April 8th. The annual parade goes down Ocean Drive, Sunday, April 10th from noon to 2:30 P.M. and our concert is on the beach until 11 P.M. with a massive fireworks display to close the weekend.

As a corporate Partner Member of MDgLcc, what makes the chamber worthy of your support?

My friend, Steve, has formed an incredible culture within the organization and these special people are what make this chamber unique. It’s not just networking to network; it’s connecting the right members for the right reasons with true substance. Our partnership has allowed us to collaborate with new accounts at a higher level through their established relationships.

a COLLeaGue Of Mine, aLsO a PharMaCisT, COnDuCTeD an hiV suPPOrT GrOuP earLier This MOnTh. Each of the 10 participants is on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Most understood that by being on daily ARVs their hIV viral load would be undetectable, but the virus would not be completely eliminated from the body. That’s why one needs to take their hIV medication every day – to keep the virus suppressed. With viral suppression, it is highly unlikely to transmit virus to another person. The acronym used for this is TASP - Treatment as Prevention. Treatment does not only help one to lead a healthier life if hIV positive, but is an important tool in the Prevention toolbox.

We know that hIV is spread by contact with certain body fluids/secretions during sex, childbirth or sharing needles. Condoms (barrier protection), safe sex practices and abstinence greatly reduce the spread of hIV.

no one in this support group knew that there is a newer tool in the toolbox to help keep their hIV negative partners negative.

Actually, many people may be unaware of this tool and it is known as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for hIV). Currently, PrEP is an oral drug, Truvada. In the future, PrEP may include injectable drugs, personal lubricants or different medications.

Truvada as PrEP is taken as 1 tablet every day. Its effectiveness drops if doses are missed or skipped. It is not indicated for situational use, that is, you can’t take a tablet right before you go out and be protected. It is indicated for individuals at high risk for hIV infection. The manufacturer recommends that Truvada be used in addition to condoms. Without condoms, studies have shown that Truvada is over 90% effective in preventing new infections when taken every day. So, used together, PrEP and condoms are powerful.

One must be hIV negative when starting PrEP and be re-tested every 3 months. Truvada, a prescription medication, is expensive but is covered by most insurance plans and Medicaid. There is a copay card from the manufacturer (Gilead) which

can bring one’s copay down to zero. If one is uninsured, Gilead will provide the medication at no charge if eligible through their patient assistance program (PAP). One recent change in the PAP program is that patients can now elect to pick up Truvada at their local pharmacy instead of having it shipped. You kidneys, liver and bone density will need to be monitored while taking Truvada. Most common side effects include dizziness, headache and nausea.

An FQhC, such as Care Resource in Miami, has a sliding scale for those unable to afford doctor visits and lab work needed for PrEP. More information can be obtained below.

On June 26, 2015, the united states Supreme Court ruled that the united States Constitution guarantees a right to same- sex marriage. This ground breaking ruling on marriage equality places all couples on the same footing when it comes to marriage and, as a result, wealth management strategies.

Same- sex married couples now have the same rights as opposite-sex married couples. These include:

» Same- sex married spouses are entitled to inherit through their spouses under state intestacy laws

» Priority in serving as administrator of the deceased spouse’s estate

» A right to the same tax benefits afforded opposite- sex married couples

» The rights to a share marital property upon divorce

The Supreme Court ruling positively affects the wealth management strategies of same-sex couples. Tax and estate planning should eventually become more straightforward. For example, buying life insurance policies to pay estate taxes will likely become less of a necessity for same-sex spouses, since they will be able to pass assets to their spouse, both during life and death, free of gift or estate tax at the time of transfer. Same-sex couples will have an unlimited marriage deduction for estate and gift tax for both federal and state estate and gift tax purposes as well as spousal exemptions

in those states that impose an inheritance tax in addition to portability of the deceased.

So what should you do about your wealth management strategies in response to these changes?

If you are not married, your objectives have not changed; you continue to face the many challenges that have burdened same- sex and unmarried couples for years. It’s important to work closely with advisors who are knowledgeable about wealth management strategies and also sensitive to the challenges faced by LGBT individuals and unmarried partners alike.

If you are married, in the case of existing tax, wealth transfer and other strategies, it would be beneficial to review these objectives with your advisor. If you have yet to develop a wealth management plan, it is important to work closely with advisors who have experience in all facets of wealth management.

THrEE QuESTIONS TO ASK YOur ADVISOr:

1. What do we need to know about beneficiary designations as we plan our marriage?

2. Should we consider shifting our investment strategy to prepare for the possibility of a higher joint tax bracket?

3. I’d like to transfer ownership of my home jointly into my own and my spouse’s name. how do I go about it?

It is always best to consult with your financial advisor, tax professional and estate attorney regarding how changes to the law could impact your financial situation. Merrill Lynch financial advisors have experience assisting same-sex couples and can help you implement an investment strategy designed for you.

There is only one way to find out if yOu are the ultimate!

are yOu PassiOnaTe aBOuT sOMeThinG? Perhaps you’re really good at something, but have never devoted time to honing your craft. Better yet, you don’t know if you’re good at it, but you’ve always harbored an affinity for something like performing. Maybe it’s singing, baking, mixing drinks, stand-up comedy, or even just strutting on a runway... you’ve put the dream away for too long. you figure you should be realistic and practical.

Put away practical, and the critics, while you’re at it! It’s time to look in the mirror and chase those dreams and become the ultimate version of yourself. no more excuses.

Did you know that there is an annual talent series in South Florida devoted to showcasing South Florida’s rising stars? That’s right, I’m talking to you, rising star!!!

The yearly series, titled ultimate Miami, gives locals the chance to try their hand at their talent in front of a live audience. ultimate Miami seeks talent looking to compete in the following categories: comedy, voice, bartender, dessert and drag queen. Those that make it through the opening contests get the opportunity to perform at a Finals competition where they open for nationally recognized headliners. Previous headliners include comics Carlos Mencia and Pablo Francisco, freestyle pop darlings TkA and Exposé, and world renowned drag entertainers including Chad Michaels and Adore Delano. Think “The Voice” or “ultimate Baking Challenge” meets “The Grammys,” sorta. Did I mention you are competing for a chance to win $5,000? That’s right. You could actually be $5,000 richer after this harrowing experience. What do you have to lose?

If you think you have what it takes to compete in any of those categories, then this is your chance. Picture yourself there - your fabulous self on a big stage while you dazzle the judges and the crowd. What comes next? First step is registration. It’s time to push yourself to be a fiercer, better, stronger version of yourself. It all starts with that famous first step. no more regrets, no more putting it off. The ultimate Miami 2016 search is in full swing and will continue through the beginning of May. Check out the details at www.theultimatemiami.com.

Decide that this is going to be the year that you defy and say “ha!” to the deepest critic in your head. You will defy odds and become that ultimate version of yourself nOW.

wHAT PrOcEDurES ArE MEN gETTINg DONE IN MIAMI?Men seeking aesthetic procedures can be separated into 4 main groups: The New Daddy, The Model, The Bodybuilder, and The CEO/TV Personality. They each represent different stages in life and aspire to achieve very distinct goals.

The new Daddy – This patient is usually in his 30-40’s, maintains a stable job, and lives a very private and active lifestyle. he just can’t get rid of stubborn fat deposits, even with a daily exercise regimen. he is a good candidate for fat reduction procedures such as: Coolsculpting® or liposuction. he would also like to reduce those pesky wrinkles he has started to notice creeping up. Botox® or any of the other neuromodulators would be the perfect remedy for this problem.

The Model - This patient has a heightened awareness of his facial features and is looking

to maximize all the available aesthetic tools at his disposal to improve facial contours and symmetry. his main goal is to augment the cheekbones. Long, oval cheek bone structure has been shown to increase a male’s attractiveness. Fillers such as Radiesse® or Juvederm Voluma® are commonly used for this purpose. A sharp jawline and a straight lateral profile (no double chin) is also optimal for the male face. The jawline can be sculpted with calcium-based products such as Radiesse®. Botox can also be applied to the mastication muscles to further chisel a sleek and slim look, enhancing the contour of the jaw. new treatments have emerged to eliminate the double chin without surgery: CoolMini™ (freezing the fat) and Kybella®.

The Bodybuilder – This patient is usually interested in body sculpting procedures such as liposuction of the abdomen with abdominal implants to reveal a “six-pack”, as well as pectoralis, and calf implants.

This group of patients sometimes requires gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) to remove overgrowth of breast tissue under the nipple secondary to the chronic use of anabolic steroids.

The CeO/TV Personality - This patient represents the most challenging group because they want to do something but they don’t want anyone to know. In many instances, they see these cosmetic procedures as necessary in order to maintain their careers afloat. They are the most likely to undergo surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery, facelifts, and hair transplantation.

As a plastic surgeon and beauty expert, I anticipate that the growth in male cosmetic procedures will only continue to climb. non-invasive treatments are favored and will continue to experience growth, especially in the younger population. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are another great tool for aging gracefully if you do your research and find a well-trained doctor with a history of superior results.

have you ever felt that sudden boost in self-confidence when you wear your best designer shirt, or splash on your most expensive cologne? There is no question that our appearance affects the way we perceive ourselves and the way we take on the world and interact with others. Women are more adept to this theory, but men historically tend to lose sight of themselves. It is increasingly more accepted and expected that men take care of themselves at the same rate as women.

new data from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has shown a 273% increase in male cosmetic procedures over the past decade. The most common procedures performed in men are: Botox® and fillers, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and male breast reduction surgery.

As an ally, being supportive and advocating for the LGBT community always seemed like a clear value to uphold. As soon as that value was transferred over into the context of a legal career in Family and Marital law, what it meant to be an ally to the LGBT community concurrently as an individual and an attorney became somewhat unclear.

I was appointed as a Guardian ad Litem in a Family Law matter, which involved three minor children and a unique issue arose. Before I even met the children, one of them reached out via e-mail and disclosed that she was gay, lonely and fearful of coming out to her parents, who were religious and often vocalized their disdain for the LGBT community at the dinner table.

The minor child was already afraid. She refused to consider discussing her sexual orientation with anyone in her family. how does one balance his or her legal role as Guardian ad Litem and protect the best

interests of a child or as an attorney advocating for a client, without considering the importance of not outing someone, especially a child? In Court, this delicate subject had to be talked “around”.

The balance came in realizing it was in the best interests of the child to make sure by the end of the case she was provided with resources, support and guidance from other members of the LGBT community so she could find her own path and feel both supported and accepted.

In these unique instances, even in our areas of

expertise, it is essential to be cognizant and to think of creative solutions that may be “outside of the box” in comparison to those we may have an easier time arriving at on a day to day basis.

The answer is no; investing in Art is not risky if it is an informed decision reached jointly with the recommendation of your art advisor. A wise assessment will always consider these important factors: a) Provenance, i.e. who is selling the piece and its ownership history, b) Quality of the artwork, e.g. artist record, representing and selling agents, technique and materials used, etc. and c) Conditions of the artwork, e.g. has the artwork been restored?

Art, like any other market, relies on the core basics: supply and demand. For example, when an artist gets sick or dies, supply is cut dry and prices automatically start to increase. Well, that makes sense, so why isn’t everyone investing in Art?

Because Art doesn’t behave as a ‘regular’ market. unlike automobiles or electronics, artworks are never massively ‘produced’ and always have a finite output. hence,

artworks behave like scarce goods and automatically generate a high demand that is less sensitive to price variation. This is one of the main reasons behind high yield rates.

Art is also an effective way to diversify your portfolio as it shields your money from any potential risks associated with your other assets. Why? Because Art generally has an inverse correlation with the financial markets. It is similar to the behavior of gold in times of currency crisis. Consequently, it lowers the overall risk of your portfolio.

Furthermore, Art for businesses, as an element of beautification and interior design is considered an asset not subject to depreciation and cause for equity increase on a yearly basis. This can be particularly helpful when seeking loans or other financing options. You are not only acquiring an asset, you are also improving the workplace environment and, as a consequence, your

employees’ performance, which ultimately has a positive impact on your income.

Therefore, it is important that you get well acquainted with the art market in general and research extensively about the artist, the artwork and the gallery with the help of an advisor. Most regrettable Art investment experiences result from misinformed/misguided decisions. however, make no mistake, a wise Art acquisition can be used as a steady investment, in the short or in the long term.

art as an InvestmentIn times where the Federal Reserve is still keeping interest rates on the low, most trusted financial instruments (CDs, 401Ks, bonds, shares, etc.) are yielding a low rate of return. If you think about it, even if you decide to invest in US Treasury bonds, you would be protecting your money against inflation, but barely making a profit. The good news is that Art can yield substantially higher rates of return, sometimes even up to 45% yearly. Yes, but US Treasury bonds are safe and Art is risky!

sometimes inaccessibility leads you where you are actually meant to be. I do believe that things always end up how they should, knowingly or unknowingly to those they’re happening to. I usually let my intuition guide me and deal with the reward or consequence it may bring. At first, one may say that the choice I made when I decided to open a restaurant on nE 79th street 4 years ago was a little risky. up until the day I drove to see the building currently housing my restaurant, I rarely left “The Beach.” I had just spent 10 years living out of a suitcase and was ready to root myself in Miami, build a community of familiar faces, and experience this idealistic lifestyle of running my own business blocks from the beautiful ocean I visited at least 5 times a year for the previous 10 years. however, once I decided to make career shift and start the search for the future restaurant space, it became painfully obvious that South Beach was well out of my reach.

I knew nothing about the area when I drove onto the overgrown and practically abandoned lot. My instinct upon walking around was to take a leap of faith and go for it. After all, it was free-standing building built in 1950, a great time for architecture, and had a massive parking lot. The building needed to be completely renovated, but that was to be expected for the price. upon the first day of demolition, I found original, steel-framed, 10 ft. warehouse windows behind the floor to ceiling wood paneling,

and beautiful large steel beams, above the drop ceilings. That reveal squashed any doubt I might have had in the choice to leave my comfort zone. It wasn’t an easy journey but today, I’m asked about the building any time I approach a table of new customers. I watch people’s faces when they walk in for the first time and it’s usually in awe of the building’s original beauty, which was created 60 years before I even touched it.

Throughout my journey, I learned that the neighborhoods surrounding nE 79th Street are community driven, active and have a lot of PRIDE in this particular area of Miami. Looking back, I am happy that I was forced to discover a new area because the sense of community and diversity in the upper East Side is present every day that I get to greet my regular customers, not tourists (although we love you too!) at the restaurant. not realizing it then, I would say this neighborhood is actually what I was looking for when I decided to settle down… not just a beautiful ocean. Sometimes staying within your means and getting forced to get creative places you exactly where you’re supposed to be – in my case it was in community.

One of the benefits of membership in MDGLCC is the knowledge that a $7 billion local LGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services.
